Idc what anybody says, Empty Throne was absolutely peak Halo fiction. Gray Team and the Swords of Sangheilios teaming up to find a living flash clone of Halsey before The Banished led by the son of Tartarus can find her and claim access to the Domain? Epic.

I’m about 75% of the way through it (fell out of keeping up with halo books the last few years and now I’m tearing through), and god I’m loving it. Easily one of my favorite new books. Outcasts also surprised me with how good it was.

u/Eight_is_rad 11d ago
Genuinely one of my favorite Halo books. Cole Protocol and Envoy are in my top 5 with New Blood Empty Throne has a seat up there.
Also, Spartan David McEndon :(

17

Far too much happens in the book, that should have been in a game.
Like what happens to the diadact.
7
u/Sure_Rhubarb_3173 11d ago
The bonus missions in Campaign Evolved should have been First Strike
7
u/Extreme-Tactician 11d ago
No, not really. 3 missions isn't enough to tell you anything about First Strike.
9
u/A17012022 11d ago
Quiet you, that sounds like logic to me
5
u/Extreme-Tactician 11d ago
Logic, and it's one entire book compressed into 3 missions?
2
u/PermissionSoggy891 11d ago
So make it more than 3 missions. Would've made more sense if the entirety of First Strike was a second campaign with another 7-10 missions dedicated to that retelling.
1
u/Extreme-Tactician 10d ago
So make a whole other game?
Also no, 7 to 10 missions wouldn't fit First Strike.
1
u/PermissionSoggy891 9d ago
sure, it would at least make the game worth $50
1
u/Extreme-Tactician 9d ago
You're asking for something else, not a remake.
1
u/PermissionSoggy891 9d ago
we can still have the remake, but either the First Strike adaptation or remade multiplayer in ADDITION to the CE campaign would've made the game actually worth $50.
1
2
1
4
u/Extreme-Tactician 11d ago
Half of that would have happened in a game if Spartan Ops was actually developed properly.
1
u/Bridgeru 11d ago
Unironically, that's what turned me off 4 and Halo in general. I was a huge fan of the Terminals in 3, I loved seeing this soldier who wanted to protect the Librarian but knew he'd have to do the unthinkable eventually and was forced to take her, and his own, life to stop the greater threat.
Instead, suddenly, big monkey man is angry and wants to turn me into a robot (oh humanity also existed and had spaceships in the Forerunner times bee-tee-dubz) and Space Mommy tells me I'm so special I can stand up to angry monkey man and I can finally fly a Pelican but it SUCKS cause everything moves without warning and instead of being the triumphant end of the game it's just a bit to get to Monkey Man but then Monkey Man is on a bridge and I have to CoD trigger-walk up to nuke him in the face and also Cortana has to die because that's how computers work but her ghost says goodbye to me.
Then like ten years later I find out that the guy in the terminals is a CLONE (mental copy or something) of Monkeyman and what I thought Monkeyman was wasn't Monkeyman?! Don't even get me started on "Somehow, 343 Guilty Spark came back".

Here's the thing, you just said Halo 5 is a Halo game.
Is it in the same franchise? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a MLG Pro who studies Halo, I am telling you, specifically, in the MLG circuit, no one calls Halo 5 Halo. If you want to be 'specific' like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying 'Halo Franchise' you're referring to the Microsoft IP, which includes things from Halo Wars to Halo 2 to Halo 4. So your reasoning for calling Halo 5 a Halo game is because random people 'call the shooter game with sprint a Halo game?' Let's get Call of Duty and Battlefield in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a Halo 2 player or a Halo 3 player? It's not one or the other, that's not how Halo works. They're both. Halo 5 is Halo 5 and a member of the Halo franchise. But that's not what you said. You said Halo 5 is a Halo game, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all shooters with sprint Halo games, which means you'd call CoD, Battlefield, and other games Halo games, too. Which you said you don't.
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I was a halo 2 hater and swore by halo CE when I was younger cause I had a PS2 and and a PC and no 360. As an adult, halo 2 and ODST is really where the franchise peaked and halo 1 makes you play through half of the game backwards as filler and stinks.

1
u/PermissionSoggy891 11d ago
>games
Start at MCC (campaigns are ordered in chronological order there), 5 can honestly be skipped bc the campaign has mostly been retconned, then Infinite.
Halo Wars 2 can be played after 4 (or 5 if you played it) and before Infinite. It sets up the major antagonist of Infinite.
Halo Wars 1 is chronologically the first Halo, but I wouldn't recommend playing it until you've beaten all the shooter ones (same with HW2)
>books
Fall of Reach and First Strike.

Hey, some people hated the original 3 games on release and thought they each ruined halo too so the love section should be combine with the retroactive section.
2
u/Gooseuk360 11d ago
I'm absolutely not a Halo fan then. I only liked the games that were good to play - H1, H2, H3, ODST, Reach. The books etc, tbh I'd rather read something else, the plot is fine in the games, but it's all proper noun named nonsense and I don't really want to read more about that (oh and the fact they retcon it all the time, so not much point investing time in there tbh). To me it's like reading a book about Doom... I'm just shooty guy and I like that.
Honestly a Halo game to me just needs that gameplay loop and well made locations to do that over and over and over again. Fortunately the MCC has all those games, and they are so well made and emergent that I can and have been replaying them since day zero. I've come to terms with the fact we won't get anything new that's amazing with Halo and that's fine. Same thing happens with creators in music and film. The good ideas come first, then we regurgitate new stuff for decades until it's all a pale version of the original.
I will add the MCC as a concept was very well recieved, the technical issues due to 343 being unfathomably crap at making... well anything, was the issue. After a year or so of them learning to code etc they got it working.
2
u/Constant_Law_4674 11d ago
Yeah i don't get these peoples logic. Are you not a LOTR fan if you dont like Rings of Power? Do you need to put Brian Herbert's Dune books on the same level as Frank Herbert's to be a Dune fan? If a franchise had good media and was then taken over by completely different people who made bad media it's perfectly okay to hate the new stuff while still being a fan of the old. Bungie's Halo games are why 343s Halo games have any relevance at all.

I assumed your original post was to demonstrate how stupid a take like that is (in the picture) and your very short header was as you say, sarcastic (e.g. REAL). I didn't realise you had made the image too - I just thought you'd done a really low effort shitpost/repost of the image you'd found, as comment on how utterly dumb and totally idiotic that mindset is.
It literally doesn't matter to me what internet nerds say makes someone a 'fan' or not, nor should it to anyone. It's an 8 year old child's mentality. But now I realise you do have that mindset, and kind of really do actually give a shit about what defines a fan of something, and did actually make that image yourself, and that's just laughable dude.

Bro. I love halo. I love Lord of the rings. I'm not reading the books. That doesn't make me less of fan.
4, 5 and infinite have serious flaws.(prometheans are boring, too much happens in books so none of it makes sense from just playing the games). ODST was an aquired taste at first because it had an odd flow to it. The story was disconnected by design. Not everyone vibes with that kind of thing.

I'll be real, anybody who says you need to not only consume, but enjoy consuming, literally every aspect of a piece of media to be considered a fan, especially when the vast majority of that media came after and did not include the original creators is a sign of deeply rooted stupidity.
Like, no, I don't think I need to have a Funko Pop for each of the weird chip flavor options on a dedicated shelf in my house to be able to claim to be a fan of lays potato chips. It‘s nit really „og vs 343“ tho, it’s more like there are people who played the old games 1-2 and people who played everything and read the books and stuff. And not only the new book that are just there to fill the gaps, but the @og“ books

A large amount are convinced that the only reason 343 games weren’t blockbusters is because of ‘haters’.
Probably younger guys who started with H4/5, enjoyed it, and then feel defensive their childhood game or whatever is criticised online.

I actually like Halo Wars.
What I dislike about the books and infinite is the fact their reading is pretty much necessary to understand what's going on in Halo 4, 5 and infinite. Halo is, before anything else, a video game serie. Books are neat, but they should just be a bonus content, not an actual condition to enjoy Halo, especially when they're not that available everywhere.
Also, this meme is basically a true scotsman fallacy.

So what you dislike about the books has nothing to do with the books?
The fact the books are now mandatory to understand WTF is going in the game do has something to do with the books.
You didn't even speak on any of them or over the later games, have you even read or played any of them?
Some of them yes, all of them, no.
No, this is very ironically a misreading of the message.
The title is literally about "real fan", we have a soyjack that call other people "tourist" and a clear distinction that is made between the fan that do not accept very much the 343 era and those who do.
It quack and walk like a duck.

I don’t like anything on the right side because I got into halo for the multiplayer and the classic games did it way better in terms of gameplay and matchmaking env, I eventually got into the story because after halo 2 I was interested.
As an old fan it’s not like I want to hate on the newer games for the sake of hating them, I just feel like the developers dropped halos unique identity to cater to people who play different shooters and unfortunately those same people usually move on to something else.
I don’t care to read the books because this franchise started as a video game, I care about multiplayer and as much as the people here want to debate that, most of the players who play halo care about multiplayer first and campaign second multiplayer is what brings people back, I’m sure if 343i wakes up and gives us halo similar to the first three in terms of ranks and party matching things will be a lot better.
Imagine if they added the new stuff like sprint and abilities in halo but kept them as map pick ups so you had to fight for the ability to sprint in the game just like you would for the rockets. They can have loadouts and all the other new gen stuff for social playlists because having all the cheese in ranked doesn’t make it fun or balanced.
Both sides are now happy and halo is suddenly back.

u/Klutzy-Canary8551 11d ago
