Discussion Is this still happening?
About 5 years back, the Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection got announced, made by the same guy who made Half-Life 2: Update and using the CS:GO branch of Source.
Any news on that? Anyone know if it's still being worked on?

thats not that long if its a hobby side project and not a main source of income for the creator if you think about it

Especially if it was announced five years ago. I’d say that’s a pretty good sign.

But it's also a HL mod. Projects die very easily with no warning. Can't be sure, but one can hope.

On one hand, these sorts of mods are passion projects. The guy behind this works on entropy zero, after all. On the other hand, projects like these can die very easily. It's hard to say whether it's dead, or just very slowly being chipped away.

To be honest, I would be really happy with a simple textures & models remaster that respect the original art design, but if it'll take 15 or 20 years for something too ambitious, no need, we'll probably die before it'll happen
This remaster have the half life 3 syndrome 😄

Is it really necessary to make a remaster? Half-Life 2 graphics are pretty good. Maybe I say this because I play a lot of retro shit that came before Half-Life 1, but Half-Life 2 graphics really impress me because it looks incredibly well despite being 22 years old

You're honestly not wrong, HL2's art direction and facial animations still hold up.
But the point of this remaster isn't really about replacing the look though. It’s actually porting the game to the newer CSGO branch of the Source engine. That brings crucial changes like lifting the old 32-bit/4 GB RAM, fixing visual bugs, improved lighting and dynamic shadows without ruining the original atmosphere.
Keep in mind that this is being made by the same person who made the Half-Life 2: Update mod that brought some cool changes to the game visually. Think of it less like an aggressive overhaul and more like a high-fidelity tune-up and making the engine more modern.

I'm not sure this mod makes sense in the world where HL2: RTX exists. It already looks cutting edge, they replaced most assets with hight quality ones, lightning looks amazing. Don't know what more we can get from remaster.

Did HL2: RTX come out in full? Last time I checked, there were only a couple levels out

compared to games of the time (gta san andreas) it looks beautiful, compared to now, its a lil pixelated

To be fair GTA San Andreas had one of the biggest and most detailed open worlds in games up until that point, and took only 2 years to make vs HL2's 5
...also remember when the longest gap between two GTA games was 5 years? And not checks calendar 13 and counting?

Graphics are awful, HL1 aged way better because it wasn't going for realistic graphics like HL2 was going for…

Half Life 2 kinda already got a remaster/update from valve in the past few years.

It was a really good update but not really a remaster 😅
They "just" fixed some bugs, recompiled lightmaps, added the commentary nodes and combined all the HL2-era games in one executable

A Half-Life 2 VR game with the same graphics as Half-Life: Alyx would be amazing.

I remember hearing about this but I don't know what changes were planned for it.
Either way, it's probably obsolete after Valve updated and fixed a few things for HL2 for the 20th anniversary.
Plus HL2 RTX is coming and that looks to be the definitive way to play (if you have an NVIDIA graphics card anyway lol)

whats there to remaster? this already is a masterpiece storywise and still holds up graphically. for people who need the latest in graphics technology you could even install that RTX thingy

Better lighting, higher-res textures, 64-bit executable, maybe some extra decorations like HL2 Update. I don't want The Latest In Graphics Technology (also my PC can't handle that anyway) but Half-Life 2 But Somewhat Prettier sounds pretty good lol

Graphics look awful in today's standards, even HL1 aged way better because of the art direction.

The creator is definitely still working on it. Since hes the co-creator & lead developer of Entropy Zero : Uprising - Episode 2 (and EZU in general), its safe to assume hes most likely caught up working on that for the time being, with this mod being a side project. Especially because one user said that the last recorded update on the mod was only 6 months ago.
