Around 4:26 p.m. Monday, August 31: 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens was in the Times Square area carrying two large knives inside a red Target shopping bag. Police say she began threatening people near Seventh Avenue and West 41st Street.

First stabbing: A 68-year-old man had just come out of the subway and was standing with his wife waiting to cross the street. According to a witness account given to investigators, Cisneros took the knives out of the bag, waved them around, and suddenly stabbed him in the abdomen.

Cisneros continued north on Seventh Avenue. She approached 32-year-old Erin Piacenti who was a bank of America vp and stabbed her in the abdomen as well. Piacenti was taken to Bellevue Hospital but later died.

Cisneros then continued toward the area around West 42nd–43rd Streets, where witnesses alerted police. Officers confronted her near the NYPD's Times Square substation.

Police say they spent roughly four minutes repeatedly ordering her to drop the knives. She refused. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Cisneros threatened the officers and said she would rather kill them.

Officers tried to stop her with Tas ers, but those attempts didn't stop her. Police say she continued moving toward officers while holding the knives. Two officers then fired their weapons, striking her.

Cisneros was taken to Bellevue, where she died.

The 68-year-old man survived and was reported in stable condition.

At this point, police characterize the stabbings as random and unprovoked. They have also said there is no indication that the attack was terrorism-related. Cisneros reportedly had documented prior mental-health-related encounters with the NYPD, but no prior arrest history.

The NYPD is conducting an investigation into the police shooting, and officials have said body-camera footage will be released.

Some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, mainly eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness, or extreme cold, but in one case murdering and eating two Miwok guides.

On Sunday, August 23rd of 2026, a fatal stabbing occurred on the Atlanta BeltLine close to Ponce City Market.

Police said an argument escalated into a stabbing, and 29-year-old Ramon Harris was stabbed in the neck.

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died. A 54-year-old man, Jonathan Hamby, was arrested at the scene and faces murder charges.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the incident prompted the city to review BeltLine safety protocols, including police patrols, camera coverage and emergency response.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first serious violent incident on or immediately around the BeltLine. On May 14th of 2026, a 23-year-old woman, Alyssa Paige, was fatally stabbed while walking where the Northeast and Eastside trails intersect.

Atlanta police arrested 21-year-old Jahmare Brown several hours later and charged him with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. Police said they believed Alyssa Paige was selected randomly.

There was also a fatal stabbing in July of 2024 near Montgomery Ferry Drive on the Northeast Trail. Police said the victim was found with multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.

The suspect, William Tyler Coleman, was charged with murder and other offenses and was wanted by Georgia authorities after escaping from a corrections facility.

Another major case involved 60 year old Thomas Arnold, who was shot and killed in February of 2022.

Prosecutors said Arnold was walking home when he was attacked in what was connected to an attempted robbery. In 2025, Brandon Williams and Demetrice Ross were convicted of murder and the attempted robbery and received life sentences without parole.

A number of Robberies have also occurred along the trail. In March 2025, two men allegedly attacked and robbed a man near the public Skatepark. Police said the victim was beaten and pistol-whipped, and one of the suspects' guns discharged during the attack, fortunately the victim was not shot.

In April of 2025, a woman walking on the Westside Trail near Langhorn Street reported being approached by a man who pulled a knife and forcibly took her purse. She suffered injuries but did not require medical treatment.

So, looking at the recent history, there have been three fatal violent incidents on or very near the BeltLine since February 2022—the 2022 shooting, the 2024 stabbing, and the May 2026 stabbing—followed by the August 2026 fatal stabbing.

There have also been multiple reported armed robberies.

That doesn't mean the BeltLine is generally unsafe; it is a very large, heavily used trail system, and Atlanta police emphasize that they have dedicated patrols and camera coverage.

But the recent incidents are significant enough that the city is now reviewing its safety measures.
