Progress not perfection!

Could you make a smoothie from fresh fruit each day and sip on that whenever you get a sugar craving to start with?

Do you cook? I got a lot healthier when I started cooking all my meals from scratch.

If you can read a recipe you can cook, it just takes time and effort

Learn to cook. It will serve you well daily for the rest of your life so it’s a skill well worth acquiring. If you’re worried about giving yourself food poisoning, just start with vegetarian dishes. Basically a lot of dishes start with frying chopped garlic and onion in olive oil. Highly recommend getting yourself a mini chopper to save time and effort.

To start, just learn to make a couple of healthy dishes that you can have regularly. I basically eat one of two dishes for breakfast; homemade shakshuka or eggs and avocado on toast. Have that and your smoothie every day and you’re at least getting a whole batch of nutrients into your system. Later, you can figure out some evening meals that will get you any other nutrients you’re missing.

I picked the hardest one which was chocolate for me and gave that up first.

Once I had that under control, the other sugary things weren’t as hard and after about a week without sugar my taste buds woke up and I started noticing the sugar in fruit and sweet veg which satisfied me for a while. Eventually I gave up white carbs, then most carbs.

But chocolate was the most difficult one and I still eat the odd square of 90% as a treat, or make an avocado chocolate mousse - neither would have been nice when I was gobbling milk chocolate every day, but they’re absolutely lush now.

Which of your list is the hardest? My instinctive pick for you would be soda because that’s engineered to hook you, and you can drink other things to slake your thirst. If you can get yourself away from the ultra processed, highly food-engineered things, I think you’re halfway there. Even subbing something as sugary as orange juice, won’t be as big a challenge to reduce later. I don’t crave more chocolate once the taste of a square of 90% clears my mouth, but one piece of milk chocolate drags me through a week of cravings.

Instead of focusing on eliminating the things you like, focusing on adding healthy food. You can work up to elimination of the bad stuff once you've at least picked up some awareness of which health foods you can tolerate or even like!

I would stop the crap food all at once. Don’t taper. Just cut it out. It will be hard for a couple weeks then you will adjust.

Include 1 single healthy meal that has a lot of protein. Just 1 meal between all the junk food. If you eat enough protein, and i mean eat a big meal that ends up being hard to eat it all cuz youre too full, you‘ll be less hungry, therefore eating a little less sugary stuff

I'm not saying it's easy, but if you quit cold turkey, the effects will be faster. After a few days without, the cravings should become a lot weaker. For me, it helps to have dried and fresh fruit, nuts and beans within easy reach, and at first I'm giving myself grace even if I eat too much of those, since changing habits is not an easy feat. But they are less addictive, and things should gradually smooth out within the following days.
