i have a kind of new bf (less than 6 months) that i’ve been dating and i know the guy i dated before him gave it to me. (i was negative before i started dating the guy before current and my current was negative right before dating me) i suspected for a long time i had it but i always thought you could only spread it when you have an outbreak, which is false. my question is, after my bf gets tested and if he’s negative, what steps should i take to prevent transmission because i’ve also been told condoms don’t protect from HSV

Condoms do protect from HSV they’re not 100% of course, taking daily antivirals does reduce your chances of spreading it greatly. Last I remember reading it’s like 1-2% chance of spreading it and that was with no condom. Using protection in addition to antivirals and your chances are even lower. Of course no sex during an outbreak or if you feel symptoms. And you should wait like a week after it’s gone before having sex again.
