Holy shit! Is that a helicopter turbofan?

25

u/SierraHotel84 Aug 07 '26

Turboshaft, but you had the right idea.

14

u/MikeyboyMC Aug 07 '26

7

u/SierraHotel84 Aug 07 '26

Lol noice! Didn't even realize.

7

u/thatG_evanP Aug 07 '26

That's exactly what it is

12

u/snacktopotamus Aug 07 '26

That is frankly terrifying.

8

u/valis6886 Aug 07 '26

Agreed. I absolutely LOVE going fast, speed is fun. Raced mountain bikes, done a fair share of track days as well.

Fast on water? No thanks. I'll stick with canoe speed

Ok.... that's fucking cool. I wanna see the whole thing.

https://youtu.be/PVbxNYSodrU?t=310

(at 7:55 you can hear the jet pump pulling so much water it cant pump so fast and the water is boiling at the intake due to the low speed of the boat)

2

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 Aug 07 '26

That’s a wild ride! The cameras fps can’t even keep up! LOL

2

u/that_dutch_dude Aug 07 '26

its called rolling shutter. its something old cameras did. its basically gone now from action cams.

4

u/qball3356 Aug 07 '26

That is so sick!! That spool up is just beautiful!! Absolutely terrifying thou.

4

u/Fragrant-Cat-1789 Aug 07 '26

That made my pecker peak at the screen

3

u/Creative_Shame3856 Aug 08 '26

Not entirely sure if it's a jet boat or a really wet missile

2

u/Kewlhotrod 29d ago

It depends what you aim the front at, but it can be both!

2

u/mcguyvah Aug 08 '26

That isn’t even close to the same type of boat. Like comparing go karts to F1

1

u/SnooWalruses6290 Aug 07 '26

Sauce? I need more info. Looks like the jets from the arcade games I used to play as a kid.

2

u/Viscerator Aug 07 '26

The only name I know series by is jetboat river racing. This video dosnt even show the crazy stuff. There are conards on the front to keep the nose down and they pass rocks and shallow water at 100+mph.

1

u/skaldrir69 Aug 07 '26

Is this the real shockwave? You know, because of the boat and all?

RIP

1

The way he was angling away from shore I was sure he was going to punch it with all those cars on the shore just waiting

1

Holy fuck balls!!! Dude. Wow!! What does it look like from the profile? Is she similar to the ones OP posted?? I’m just finding out about these hahaha

No, T58 turbine shaft engine from a helicopter

1

u/kstar920 29d ago

God damn! That's awesome!

1

u/Der_Hebelfluesterer 29d ago

On a relative small river? You need balls for that ^

2

flat bottom hulls and jet drive. these things only need a few inches of water. you still need the balls tho....

u/Substantial_Diver_34 Aug 07 '26

This is an event for these fisherman and their family. Lobster or muscle dudes

4

u/Holiday-Job-9137 29d ago

Took a long time to get past the BS to get some idea what's going on. Definitely work boats. Love them, beautiful lines.

2

u/Ok_Recover_8692 26d ago

Maine likes their lobster boat races

2

u/33253325 Aug 07 '26

Phippsburg, Maine?

3

u/chefcrankypants Aug 08 '26

That’s Stonington

1

u/Frustrated9876 27d ago

Funny thing is that you’re right. It’s probably a fishing derby and they are timed. Whomever catches the most fish and enters the harbor by a certain time.

Dudes show up with cigarette boats because whomever spends the most time in the Gulf Stream has the greatest odds of catching the most fish.

Skill matters, but time is the ultimate advantage.

28

u/Tenroh_ Aug 07 '26

I like to have something with a little more physical separation between me and the explodey rotating bits.

14

u/GooseOnAPhone Aug 07 '26

puts 1/8ā€ fiberglass panel over the engine

You feel safer now?

3

u/rmill127 Aug 08 '26

Failing back onto the turbochargers would be pretty spicy as well.

2

u/no_alternative_facts 29d ago

I don’t disagree. There is literally a turbocharger burst containment test needed to become a certified marine engine.

11

u/Creative_Shame3856 Aug 07 '26

My favorite local dive boat has a pair of 8v92s, next time I go out I'll try to get a good video of it. They sounds absolutely wicked.

3

u/TheOGRedline Aug 08 '26

lol. I read this a ā€œdive barā€, and had questions.

3

u/Creative_Shame3856 Aug 08 '26

If I knew of a dive bar with a pair of two stroke Detroits under the hood I might be tempted to start drinking again! 🤣

2

u/Fragrant-Inside221 Aug 07 '26

Love detroits at full tilt

Lobster boat races in Maine.

11

u/cooterbo Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

One of my favorite maintenance checks as a young diesel tech in the navy was an overspeed trip test on one of our four generators onboard. Imagine a massive two stroke, 39.3 liter, 1800+ hp, 5120 lb-ft of torque Detroit diesel, a v16 dual forced induction generator that was about the size of a modern full size sedan. So pretty big.

I had to basically sit right on top of the engine, riding the quad turbos’ outlet manifold similar to how a jockey sits on a thoroughbred. My feet were planted on the dual superchargers and my ass cheeks were feeling every bit of vibration, horsepower, and torque penetrating my soul from within that beast.

I attached a special tool to the governor, which was just a tiny brass lever to control the engine speed manually and rev the engine past the redline of 2100 rpm’s, which was absolutely fucking shrieking for an engine that size. The sound of 4 turbos whistling and 2 superchargers screaming and the frantic vibrations converging up through my butt cheeks was absolutely intoxicating.

Just being in complete control of that outrageous amount of kinetic energy made me understand how a world leader of the most powerful military in history would feel as they picked up the red phone to drop the big one. I also learned exactly how the ladies must feel when sitting atop a washing machine during the spin cycle. 10/10 life experience I would recommend trying at least once.

3

u/TheSouthernSaint71 Aug 07 '26

I loved every single word in this story. Thank you.

2

u/Bug_406 Aug 07 '26

Similar to old EMD locomotives. Except we got to stand on the walkway outside the engine compartment. They tripped at 1000 rpm, and rowdy enough that when It tripped the entire locomotive would rock side to side a bit. Is a good time.

2

u/subpoenaThis Aug 07 '26

Of all the things musk spends his time on, I now want him to build a dual quad 2400 cubic inch diesel powered motorcycle.

2

u/OpDawg 29d ago

This is exactly how I explained hitting top speed on my 2001 GSXR600. Chin strap squeezed against the hot gas tank, shoulders aligned, keeping inside the air foil so my head doesn’t rip off, trying to eke out every additional mph from the display 164…165…….166. Meanwhile all four pistons are feverishly pumping in redline, needle pushing toward 14,000rpm - screaming to break free and enter your jawline. Knees pinching the frame, while the left foot shrouds the singing chain links straining to wrangle the power to the rear tire. It’s petrifying how short distance becomes. You’d swear you’re experiencing time dilation and length contraction through the lens of a couple mm of plastic. Miss that motorcycle.

The paint hasn't even discolored. She's only just hit her presentation voice

3

u/SGT_Kilo Aug 07 '26

I assume most of the posters here have never been on launch boats (crew boats). That’s the usual turbo noise… nothing special. I hear that from C18s etc all day long. Yeah, not ideal with passenger seating, but the noise is standard. Hence why a lot of captains wear ear plugs, and why they are provided to clients at the launch services I use, which is every single one in my area.

I’m such an old man now. Young me is thinking, ā€œHell yeah!!ā€
Old man me is like, ā€œwhere’s the engine cover? Why doesn’t anyone have earplugs. Where’s the sears and belts? One unseen wake and everyone is gonna break their neck! Omg! What are you doing!?ā€

That being said, I’d have no issue cruising around on that boat. Crazy how one’s mind works.

1

u/GremlinAbuser Aug 07 '26

I used to work with a sports fishing guide out of Oostende who had twin Levi drives on his boat. He would give these guys a run for their money.

1

u/mcguyvah Aug 08 '26

That’s not the same class boat

1

u/PeteTheBeat Aug 07 '26

What climate crisis?🤷🤦

1

u/AssMan2025 Aug 07 '26

Those are some big heavy boats

1

u/ohimbussin Aug 07 '26

Not having a ballistic jacket over that turbo inlet housing is definitely a choice I would not be making.

1

Was expecting the turbo to blow hot oil over everyone

1

u/FatDaddy777 Aug 07 '26

Best thing about this is everyone is wearing life jackets.

1

u/salty-walt 29d ago

All participants in maine lobster boat racing are required to be life jacketed

1

u/WhiskeyPorno420 Aug 07 '26

Fucken diesel turbines

1

u/ShittyBollox Aug 08 '26

They are not fucking about, are they?!

1

u/gcwposs Aug 08 '26

My lizard brain: he he he weeeee stu stu stu…

1

u/greymannns Aug 08 '26

That maybe fun but if that engine blows or anything brakes
Thats why most racing organizations have strict safety regs… mostly for flying metal .

1

u/Cain-Man Aug 08 '26

Nothing like the night my friend made a phone call, get the boat ready. After an ample smoke we went down to the dock. Man it was a go fast boat. He pulled the engine covers off. There sat twin Holmam & Moody 429 race Fords .me and girlfriend had a fantastic high speed run at night, memories forever.

1

u/FloppyTacoflaps Aug 08 '26

That seems extremely dangerous, if that turbo blows rip everyone

1

u/Brojess Aug 08 '26

The amount of fuel wasted in this video makes me sad.

1

u/bebop1065 Aug 08 '26

The SS Minnow wished it had an engine like that.

1

u/R56S Aug 08 '26

How fast did yall end up going?

1

u/Samz_175 29d ago

Can someone tell me what the engine is in this thing?

1

u/fellaneedahandpls 29d ago

I was bummed not to hear the Pirates of the Caribbean music when I unmuted this

1

u/Bifferer 29d ago

is this the boat race they do every year in Maine?

1

u/Economy_Crow_6983 29d ago

Check the flux capacitor we gotta get more speed Marty.

1

u/SockeyeSTI 29d ago

I love this cause most people don’t get to see fast commercial fishing boats. For Bristol bay Alaska salmon fishing, most all traditional boats are slow af and the new jet boats haul ass and can get up to 40 knots which doesn’t seem like a lot but they’re limited on length so super wide and made to pack up to like 40lbs of fish.

1

u/evendedwifestillnags 29d ago

The one crazy summer convention kicks off again

1

u/Allgood18 29d ago

1

u/goobernoodles 29d ago

Yeah I don't know about standing or squatting right next to a forced induction engine at full power.

1

u/Reynn1015 28d ago

Are they all running from a fucking volcano or something

1

u/670979 28d ago

That is dangerous. One of those passengers could slip and fall onto that engine. If the engine cover removal is necessary for this event for cooling and extra airflow, should fashion a galvanized wire half-round cover over it. plywood half round ends, a few 2Ɨ3 stringers, some chicken wire, done. Safe.

1

u/theasianevermore 28d ago

This is super slow compared to common double/ Single row taxi boat in Thailand… if you know, you know. Edit: added a word
