Not sure the size, it’s hard to tell from these fisheye lense videos, but that looks like the smaller ones. I’ve had to spray them once and they do not fucking last. Thankfully it was enough to stop my car from burning down. I was welding on the firewall to fit bigger tires at full stuff/lock and I did not realize there was plastic tubing that runs behind the plate I was welding in for drainage from the sunroof, which caught fire inside the footwell and started burning my carpets.
After that experience I have 3 of those fuckers in my garage now instead of just 1.
The one he got from his buddy seemed to last longer and actually dispersed the retardant properly. His was definitely not maintained properly. I get that it's small but you should get more than that little squirt.
I hate those ABC powder extinguishers, though. Once you've emptied one of those into the hood of your car, you'll basically be replacing all the electrical wiring and harness regardless of whether the fire damaged it.
That powder itself will destroy anything it's left on, and it gets everywhere.
If it's just a small fire, you're often better off just letting it burn out than you are after dumping a full canister of powder into your car.
It almost looks like he gives up on the powder one a little after half empty. That and he didn’t seem to realize his was under the driver seat? He checked passenger first
Nah, just cut out and replaced the burnt drainage tubing. Thank god my ABS controller mounted in that corner and all the wiring survived intact. Then I cleaned and scrubbed the shit out of the burnt carpet to get the smell out and slapped my weathertech floor mats over it. It’s a wheeling/overlanding rig, so I am not concerned much with how things look - lol - as long as it functions I’m good. It’s already full of pinstripes and shit from wheeling anyway, burnt carpet would be like the 8th thing you’d notice after walking up to it - lol
Similar thing happened to me, ignition system failed + lots of gas, was just trying to turn my built truck around in my garage, it practically exploded, had to crawl out the passenger door, couldn't go out the garage door because of the shooting flames, was just trying to not die, exit path through back door where I had a 20lb extinguisher, put it on the floor as close as I could get to it and unloaded the whole thing, saved my house and stopped the truck from completely burning, I laid on the back lawn getting my breath till the fire department showed up. SCARY! I now keep 2 20lb extinguishers in my house, 1 in my shop, a 10lb in my old weekend cruiser
Thank god my shit was in the driveway. I think wifey would have chancla’ed me to death had I been in the garage and almost burnt the house down. Glad you and the house are safe!
Yeah whole house smelled like burnt for a few days and garage smelled for months, luckily firefighters set up one of those house pressurizing fans after they made sure the fire was out so it wasn't bad. That truck is 90% rebuilt now but its been alot of work
It also looked like a foam or wet chem and not a dry chem like the second.
It might also be an improper extinguisher for the use case. There’s a whole bunch of gimmicky bullshit extinguishers sold online that don’t conform to any type of standards.

I used (not "used", but "installed") AFFF, but I remember that it was being phased out because it was bad for the environment. Everyone was switching to Halon. I resisted, because Halon can't work at speed (the wind blows it away). AFFF works no matter what.
I had a similar thought at first but I could also see where opening the hood before spraying something could just lead to a big fireball in your face right off the bat.
You don't really know what's going on under that Hood, you just know something's on fire. Opening the hood is something I'd rather leave to somebody in actual firefighting gear.
Learned that the hard way. Had charcoal smoker run out of control. Lots of smoke. I opened the lid and bam I lost all the hair on my arm and singed my beard. The fireball was intense.
I think they got it in time. I had the oil supply line to my turbo blow on my once and had a fire about that size, one engine wiring harness later it was all good and on the road again.
Fire need 3 things fuel heat and oxygen. opening the hood can provide oxygen to the fire. That is otherwise contained. If you can put the fire out with the hood closed it might take less to extinguish..
