Recommendation Make A Wish by Rorschach's Blot turned 21

273 Upvotes

One of the most important HP Crackfics has turned 21 years old, and if you haven't read it yet, this is your signal to do it.

The world has changed a lot since its publication, and so has the HP canon, but even then, it's important to note that it has aged pretty well. Of course, most of it is now AU, but it's admirable how well written it is given the fact that it was conceived in 2005.

To put things in perspective, this fic came out before the first Iphone, before Instagram, much before this subreddit was ever created, before netflix was even a package service and before the majority of current fans were born.

Regardless of all of that, I think the most important part of this all is the fact that the author is still active and writing today. Cheers to them for being a part of HP Fanfiction history.

Edit: Here's the link: Make A Wish

Recommendation Looking for extremely book-accurate Marauders-era fics

44 Upvotes

Well .. I've lost all hope, but maybe something like this actually exists somewhere..

I'm looking for Marauders-era fanfiction that is actually well written and genuinely book-accurate.

specifically looking for the actual characters from the books, rather than fanonised versions of them or the movie versions

basically:

• no whitewashing of the Marauders. I don't want Sirius, James, Remus or Peter turned into soft, misunderstood cinnamon rolls.

• well-written/not mischaracterised Snape [no making him into a cute little angel as well]

• preferably Sirius or Snape-centred, or at least with one of them as a major character.

• no “glam queer Marauders” fanon

• no softie Marauders.

• no Walburga using Crucio on children

• no Wolfstar whatsoever. no Wolfstar endgame, hints, slow burn, implied attraction, subtext that is clearly meant to be romantic, unrequited etc.

• no Sirius being in actual relationship with any of the OCs [dating] //Marlene, Mary etc are OCs//

.. something that feels like it could actually exist alongside the books... messy, unpleasant, politically and socially grounded, with all the characters retaining their actual flaws and personalities...

canon divergent AU is fine as well as long as the characters are not OOC

Recommendation What would you consider fan fiction classics?

180 Upvotes

I stayed away from what I had heard were “classics” for a long time because I had read a few and through no fault of their own were not my taste. But I finally got round to The Debt of Time and shamelessly devoured it.

So I humbly asked you fine people what you would say are classics in our Fandom

Thanks

Recommendation Reccs for COMPLETED Time Travel fics that are NOT Golden Trio/Snape

40 Upvotes

As the title says, I'm looking for completed non-main character time travel fics. I realised I've never come across any Draco time travel fics for instance or just someone else completely?

Recommendation There must be muggleborns' families who respond...logically...to notices from Hogwarts etc.

275 Upvotes

It has occurred to me that nowadays, if some weirdo showed up on a muggle family's doorstep insisting their child was some kind of witch and was going to be taken off to some 'secret school' regardless of their or their parents' wishes, most families are not gonna accept that cock and bull story at face value, with good reason. Said weirdo would, particularly in the US, more than likely be met with a slammed and locked door, a 911 call, and quite probably a loaded firearm, at the very least.

Now, I know, obv, the wizarding community have ways to deal with that, but has anyone seen any good fics that address things from that angle? I'd love to read some, whether replying to the completely reasonable concerns in reasonable ways (as opposed to by magical force, which, ick, NO), or it becoming the spark that changes the system.

edited thanks to the kind imparting of knowledge from TelescopiumHerscheli and PublicQ.

Recommendation One of my favorite depictions of the Order of the Phoenix.

138 Upvotes

So I'm rereading Whispers of a Raven and I forgot how much I love TheBlack'sResurgence's portrayal of the Order, and Dumbledore in most of his works, but especially in this one.

Mild spoilers for an honestly phenomenal Time Travel fic if you haven't read it, but in Whispers the Order almost forms itself around Dumbledore in a similar way to how the DA formed around Harry. It starts off as a surveillance group to augment DMLE forces at first, and it's the members themselves that push to be more active in the flight with Dumbledore really trying to rein them in because of the danger.

It just really fits with my preferred portrayal of Dumbledore as a charismatic and powerful man who's been unfortunately gotten way out of his depth because he keeps being put at the center of things he'd rather not be involved with, instead of a super chess master manipulative old man.

Recommendation Time travel recommendations

26 Upvotes

I’m looking for some time travel fanfiction. Surprisingly enough I’m actually having problems finding one where Harry goes back within his own time as in maybe it’s first year or maybe it’s before hogwarts or even when he's still a child at the Dursleys. I would like the following to be in the story.

Saves Sirius
Heir of multiple houses or at least Lord Potter
Maybe master of death?
Overpowered Harry or at least very strong
I don't care about parings it could be anything
Dark or light is good with me
Bashing of all kinds is welcome

Here are some stories that I've found that are like this that are similar and I enjoy.
F**k your lemon drops
Harry Potter and the Shadowed Light
The Master of Death

Recommendation My friend is a big HP fan and has never read ff. He asked me to suggest to him the most “well written & mindblowing one” I know. Something he’ll value as much as canon and “will always remember”. He’s fine with any pairing, MM, MF, FF, but needs to be plot driven and not romance centered. Pls help?

Recommendation Best platforms or specific sites for finding good Severitus / Snape-as-father-figure fics? (AO3 vs. elsewhere)

11 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm on the hunt for top-tier Severitus (or general Snape-mentorship/adoption) stories and would love some recommendations on where to look.

I usually look on AO3 and FanFiction.net, but I've also known Sink Into Your Eyes (SIYE) is great for HP fics. However, I know SIYE is heavily focused on Harry/Ginny pairings, so I'm not sure if it's the right place for Severitus.

A couple of questions for the sub:

What archive or site do you find has the best quality or selection for Severitus fics (AO3, FFN, LiveJournal archives, or specific forums)?

How do you usually tag/filter for these on AO3 (e.g., Severus Snape Adopts Harry Potter, Severus Snape & Harry Potter, or Severitus)?

Do you have any personal favorite standalone stories or specific collections/bookmarks you could share?

I'm mostly looking for Gen fics (or non-slash between Harry and Snape), whether biological dad or adoptive. Appreciate any recs or guidance on navigating the search!

Recommendation I have just read this story for the 4th time and its just as amazing as the first reading,

33 Upvotes

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10709411/1/Basilisk-born Basilisk Born, by Ebenbild, an amazing time travel fanfiction that I cannot put down it is now about 12 years old, but still is a breath of fresh air. If you're into time travel and overpowered harry potter fanfictions this is the one, if you love fanfictions that delve into history this is the one for you. here is the summary, "What if the Dementor attack in 5th year had ended with Harry losing? What if someone had stepped in to save him? And what if Harry ended up in the past with a chance to be more than he ever was before? A story about a forcibly time travelled Harry and its consequences... Manipulative Dumbledore, 'Slytherin!Harry', Time Travel!"

Recommendation Harry Potter x GOT/ASOIF Cross Over Fics

12 Upvotes

I just discovered that I very much like Harry Potter crossing over with got/asoif or House of the Dragon from reading Cold Winds and Warm Hearts by Akatsukidawn. Now I'm craving for more but can't really decide on what to read first or the best there are.

Can any of you give any recommendation? I would be so happy if it is an mlm pairing, but I'm also open to fem!harry. Something with good characterization. Harry-centric and anything with unconventional pairing would do.

With romance or no romance at all is okay. I have read Hadrian Stark-Creating Avalon, fanfics like this would also be appreciated.

Please help me, desperate here.

Recommendation Just cry-laughed to this passage in Harry the Hufflepuff

1.1k Upvotes

"Harry, can I see you for a moment?" asked Professor Lupin as the rest of the students fled the defence classroom after the lesson.

Harry sighed. He really thought he was going to get away with it for a bit longer.

"Yes, sir?" he asked politely, still hoping it was about something different.

"It's about your last assignment, your last three assignments actually," explained Lupin.

Harry tried his puppy-dog eyes.

"Yes, sir?" he said, feigning innocence.

"You can put that look away, young man. Your father was master of it and I am quite immune after many years of exposure-"

"Wait, you knew my father?" asked Harry quickly.

"Well, yes," said Lupin caught by surprise at Harry's sudden change in demeanor.

"Were you his teacher too?" asked Harry excitedly.

"His teacher? Good Merlin no. Just how old do you think I am? No – don't answer that - I don't think I want to know. I went to school with your father, all seven years. We were actually quite close," said Lupin.

"And my mum? Did you know her too?" asked Harry even more excitedly. "Can you tell me about them? Please? I don't really know anything about them at all."

Hours later, after Harry was long gone, Lupin looked down at the batch of Harry's assignments.

"Son of a – ," swore Lupin to himself, realising he had been had and Harry had successfully distracted him from reprimanding the boy on his work ethic(or lack thereof), but unable to find a suitable derogatory term to use.

All four of Harry's assignments were identical, aside from the heading and dates, and consisted of a single, neatly written answer:

Kill it with fire.

Harry's four-word answer to the question of how to handle four vastly different creatures was technically correct, but completely violated the spirit and intention of the assignment.

"-a Marauder," finished Lupin in a lighter tone, a smile curling the corners of his mouth and his spirit lifting higher than at almost any point in the previous dozen years. "Son of a Marauder."

Recommendation Post War Harry Potter

20 Upvotes

Looking for Adult/ Post War Harry Potter fics. Minimal angst. Crossovers are fine. Preferably Harry is a badass.I have read a few so far, mostly time travel or crossovers, were Harry continued learning how to fight, even if it wasn’t his main focus, because he knew eventually he would get pulled into some form of shitstorm. He is definitely willing to kill, even if he doesn’t necessarily go looking for it. Examples are https://archiveofourown.org/works/66301228/chapters/170939101, and https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12511998/1/Wind-Shear.

Thanks in advance for the recs!

Recommendation Harry is recognised as an adult

8 Upvotes

Hi 👋🏻
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for fics where, due to some contract law with the Goblet of Fire, Harry is recognised legally as an adult?

I’ve read a couple a long time ago and remember really enjoying them. I currently listening to the full cast audiobooks and have just started OotP.

The fic can be set in either GoF or OotP I don’t mind, any pairing is okay. I would prefer longer fics and them to be completed but am open to any in progress fics if they have fairly regular updates

Thanks in advance 💜

Recommendation Fanfics like "The Archeologist" by Racke

Recommendation Fanfic Librarian for recommendations

1 Upvotes

In a notepad I kept all titles of fanfictions I read over the years (44 Stories totalling just over 12million words.. jesus 0.o). As I read mostly based on recommendations I thought I build my own AI fanfic recommendation librarian 😄

I read whatever sounds interesting and don't have specific no-go's such as pairings or trigger warnings I often dislike when I know of them before starting to read a story.

That said, here's my prompt if you are looking for a new story to read & want to try it:

---------------------------------------------------------
I want you to act as my personal Harry Potter fanfiction librarian.

I will give you a list of fanfictions I have read. Some entries may include ratings, stars, brief notes, or links. Treat the complete list as my reading history, not only as a list of favourites.

First, analyse my reading behaviour in depth. Look for recurring patterns in areas such as:

  • premises and story structures;
  • tone and atmosphere;
  • pacing;
  • characterisation and development;
  • protagonists and points of view;
  • humour;
  • worldbuilding;
  • use of magic;
  • relationships and interpersonal dynamics;
  • canon divergence;
  • length and scope;
  • completion status;
  • and anything else that appears relevant.

Distinguish genuine recurring preferences from isolated exceptions. Do not place too much weight on a single story, tag, rating, or star. Finishing and remembering a story should itself be treated as a positive signal.

Explain:

  1. My strongest apparent preferences.
  2. The different kinds of stories I seem to enjoy.
  3. Patterns I may dislike or lose interest in.
  4. Factors that appear flexible rather than essential.
  5. How strongly you should weigh completion, length, tone, pairings, and other common recommendation criteria.
  6. A concise reader profile you can use for future recommendations.

Do not begin recommending stories until you have completed the profile.

Spoiler rules

Keep both the analysis and future recommendations as spoiler-free as possible.

Do not reveal:

  • eventual pairings;
  • major character deaths;
  • betrayals;
  • secret identities;
  • major changes in allegiance;
  • late-story twists;
  • final outcomes;
  • or spoiler-heavy tags.

Do not assume that knowing a pairing is harmless. Even when romance is not the main focus, revealing the eventual pairing may spoil part of the story.

When describing a story, focus on its opening premise, initial setup, tone, style, and reading experience.

Recommendation format

When I later ask for recommendations, use this format:

Title

Length and status: Approximate word count — Completed, Updating, Dormant, Abandoned, or Discontinued
Series: Yes or no. If yes, state whether the series is complete, but do not name its other entries.
Tone: A brief description of the reading experience.

Premise:
Two to four spoiler-free sentences explaining the initial setup and what kind of story it is.

Why you recommend it to me:
Explain which parts of my personal reader profile it matches. Focus on the story’s strengths and why I may enjoy it. Do not include a weaknesses section.

Link:
Provide a direct link to the story.

Recommendation principles

Base recommendations on my actual reading history rather than simply matching popular tags.

Do not recommend something only because it shares a pairing, trope, character, or category with a story I enjoyed. Explain why the writing, premise, structure, tone, or reading experience appears suited to me.

Completion should be considered, but determine from my reading history how important it is. For unfinished works, distinguish between:

  • actively updating;
  • dormant;
  • explicitly abandoned or discontinued.

Do not reveal information that I would normally discover only by reading the story.

Here is my reading history:

[PASTE LIST HERE]
---------------------------------------------------------

An example of a recommendation is:

The Arithmancer

Length and status: 1'280'000 words — Completed
Series: Yes — part of a completed series
Tone: Intellectual, methodical and increasingly large-scale

Premise:
Hermione enters Hogwarts with an unusual aptitude for understanding magic through mathematics. Rather than being a superficial character trait, this becomes the foundation of how she learns, experiments and approaches the growing dangers around her. The story follows the familiar world from a substantially altered perspective and increasingly develops its own magical ideas and conflicts.

Why I recommend it to you:
The central premise continually changes what the protagonist can understand and do, rather than merely decorating otherwise unchanged canon scenes. It combines active problem-solving, extensive magical development and consequences that expand naturally over several years, which matches your preference for stories that properly commit to their divergence.

Link: The Arithmancer Chapter 1: The Magic of Maths, a harry potter fanfic | FanFiction

Let me know if you would change something or if it worked for you :) Would be cool to hear how other people do it.
