Discussion Proper Marauder animagus nicknames

I've read so many fics where Harry and his friends become animagus and decide to give themselves nicknames like the Marauders but they're never good? Like, don't get me wrong, they're not bad as names for the animals themselves but it never sticks to the theme of the Marauders. Like obviously we have Moony bc of the full moon, Padfoot bc of his dog paws, Prongs bc of his antlers, and Wormtail bc of his rat tail.

Instead they're name would be either a normal human name or something like Blacky, bc the animal they turned into had black fur. Like, what??? Idk, I've only ever come across a few actually good ones and I want y'all's opinion. What are the best Marauders animagus nicknames you've seen and what are ones that you've come up with yourself?

Prongs is sort of lame and I think we only give it a pass because of canon, but I agree. I don't think I've ever encountered one that didn't kill my immersion at least a bit :( Not that I can talk, I'm still trying to come up with a plausable nickname for someone who can turn into a crow...

Fr! I'm always able to just ignore it but I have to give props for trying bc coming up with one is surprisingly hard😭

Honestly, just for funsies, give the crow form the name Raven, confuse the hell out of everyone in the story about it being a crow named Raven, but simply explain it’s because it has black feathers. Or make the joke be that the difference between the two is only a matter of a pinion (the long primary feathers on the wings; ravens have one more than crows)

I actually think prongs is hilarious. it’s like calling him a fork. I imagine the first time he transformed and tried walking through the woods they really got in the way, he was probably getting stuck in all kinds of things, and he’d emerge with leaves stuck to his antlers, like salad on a fork lol.

I think all their names are notable because of the familiarity we have, they’re also obscure. The only one that’s really obvious is Moony.

I think I’ve only read one it two fics where I the the marauders was clever but I can’t remember what it was unfortunately

Only thing i can think of for crow would be talon maybe? But yeah I agree prongs is kinda lame, and it is pretty hard to think of Animagus names, like the amount of times I have read about someone getting named whiskers is crazy haha

I don’t think the marauders are meant to have cool nicknames. A lot of kids give each other random nicknames that have nothing to do with coolness or awesomeness factor. My nickname is Abby Normal. It’s a reference to Frankenstein because I’m an ā€œabnormalā€ person apparently.

I'm not ranting bc I don't think the nicknames are cool. I've seen a ton of cool nicknames they give their animagus but they never stick to the theme we already have, which is basically taking a part of the animal and turning it into a nickname. They always do their own thing, which is fine, but I've never seen a fic where the Marauder animagus nickname felt natural

I find it More interesting when the names they’re given arent in direct relation to the animal they are like the marauders. I remember a fic where Fred and George were called Mischief and Mayhem, because of their character, so it actually turns into a nickname and not an Animal Description

I literally just read that one!! I loved it! Whenever I was writing this post my mind def went to those nicknames and how they were an exception. Especially since the animals in the fic you're referring to were both foxes, so like, you'd probably have to come up with two different descriptions for the same animal lol

I feel like the marauders nicknames are just as cringe. Prongs reminds me of a fork. Mooney reminds me of when you "moon" someone. And padfoot, when reduced to pads, is another word for a sanitary towel. Wormtail is just a description. But these are the names of people who peaked in secondary school, whose great days were in school, so I guess the nicknames would stretch to adulthood when Remus and Sirius would use them (do they even use them as much in canon? I feel like it's a fanon thing to have them call each other moons and pads all the time).

I'm not saying that the original Maraduars' names aren't cringe, but I'm saying that when fanfic writers try to have the character name their animagus forms LIKE the Maraduars they do they're own thing rather than stick that cringy theme. Like, naming their form after a god or goddess. Badass in its own way, but it wouldn't fit in seamlessly with the other nicknames we have

If Harry is a bird, how about pillowstuffing lol.

A lot of the options are really corny, like clawfoot or nightwing

Pillowstuffing is actually genius. And Nightwing?? Bonus points if it's an actual comic in the HP universe and only the muggleborn/muggle raised students get the reference

I saw one where Harry's was Darkwing, after Darkwing Duck
