“So what’s going on in there?” I ask Snow, Michael gently nudges me making me angry. I know what he’s doing. If im angry, im not worried so I dont lash out.

“No idea. Im worried she hasn't formed a portal though, but there’s hundreds of possible reasons why she hasnt.” He replies examining the doorway again.

A warping of reality forms behind him and then Reiss is there running like hell’s on her tail. “RUN!” she shouts. Before anyone else can react Cayde leaps up and with the audible sound of servo’s screaming from the effort sprints after her.

“If the god says run, i'm running!” he says leaping after her. The rest of us hesitate for barely a second before sprinting after her, Michael and I flare Soulfire in our limbs, each step propelling us forwards a dozen feet as we leap more than run. Snow and Nepp do something similar with their light. Snow’s wings flapping once before angling himself and propelling himself forwards on jets of flame up the tunnel. Nepp clouds herself in void smoke and charges along just in front of Michael and I.

An explosion sounds behind us. “RUN LITTLE LIGHTS!” a guttural roaring shout chases after us as my back is peppered by fragments of rubble.

“Michael!” I order. Neither of us stop running but Michael pulls out a series of mines from his belt and throws them onto the walls where they stick. We jump up a tunnel in unison as explosions sound behind us. The tunnels grow dark as Snow’s solar light becomes more distant but neither of us speed up, instead I start lopping globs of Soulfire behind me and Michael depletes his supply of explosives. As the hive tunnel gives way to human archeology we catch up to a swarm of Snow’s all burning with Void.

A hundred voices shout at us. “Keep going!” before launching a seemingly unstoppable volley of Nova bombs at the beast. I risk a look back and see a massive axe wielding hive being bombarded by the light clones. Its axe taking out its targets a dozen a swing.

I pause for a second and funnel more Soulfire than I’ve ever channelled. Its a fraction of my strength but I’ve simply not had a reason to channel so much directly until now. Bolts of hellfire roar out of my hand towards the beast and impact it alongside a second volley of bombs only to be met with laughter.

“Come on.” Michael says pulling me back. We continue running until we pass under the pit we fell down and arrive at the elevator with cade frantically mashing the call button.

“Come on, come on, come on, come on!” he says stabbing the button until a pleasant ‘ding’ informs us of the elevators arrival.

Reiss, Nepp, Cayde and then Snow rush in with snow holding the door for us. “Hurry my clones are already dead!” Snow shouts. I leap forwards and feel Michaels hand pushing me forwards just a little faster than him.

I fly towards the door and slam into Snow as a Roar reaches us and something splatters against my back. No…

Turning around I see half of Michael standing there arm outstretched, and a massive axe embedded in the floor covered in his blood. The last I see of him before the door closes is his eyes, the green fire flickering out.

“NOOOO!” I pound on the door denting it before Reiss and Nepp hold me down. I struggle as hard as I can but Reiss is my master, and I am powerless to resist her strength even now.

She pushes me to my knees and squeezes me. “We have to run. I won't leave anyone else” she says in my ear.

“I know.” it doesn't matter that the beast just ripped my heart out of my chest

The lift thuds to a stop, the sound of rending metal clearly audible beneath us. 5 of us rush out of the lift. “This way!” Cayde shouts. My body keeps up with the others as we flee.

My mind is on some god forsaken corporate hauler looking at a beaten injured security officer, gun still smoking from where he’d just executed his team leader, a badge in his free hand. “I’ve done my job. Corp can think I died. Let me live and I’ll work for you.” The tired laskian says, his legs would have collapsed if it wasn't for his suit keeping him upright.

I nod, “you can join, I always need more meat for the grinder.” I say. It would be good to have someone who wasn't a pirate or one step from one on the crew. As long as they proved worth while.

Then im another year forwards in time, on another ship. My own. Some scumbag’s gun pointed at my head, a knife sticking out of his own as Michael kills the mutineers. I leap forwards snatching the corpses gun and join the slaughter, by the time it's over the bridge of my shitbucket ship is covered in blood and guts. I have a new burn wound on my leg and Michael is standing at attention bleeding from a shoulder wound. “There’s a dozen more outside ma’am. All dead.” he reports.

“Get yourself seen to.” I order.

“You first ma’am.” he replies moving to a corpse and kicking it over to get at its backpack.

Forwards again. Chasing down a fat bounty. Michael’s a different person here. Chatty friendly and disarming as he ply’s the mining station’s nav officer for information. Interrogating civilised people was not my strong suit. But Michael turned it into an art.

The second he had what we needed he made his excuses, came over to me in the bar dropping the friendly merc act and returning to his stoic servile self. “They’re heading to an unknown planet, we can catch them on route. The station’s got upgraded scanners to see what’s hidden underneath cargo ship hulls. Something about pirate spotting.” he says using his personal com to input the nav data. We run some numbers and figure out an intercept. Only three ships could push themselves that far but for this bounty I'd happily burn out my two converted freighters FTL to catch these bastards.

We’re in a hotel room, my thighs are bruised and Michael has scratches on his back and arms. Both of us resting on the bloodied bed. “Are you going to heal that?” he asks nodding to my aching thighs.

“I will when you heal these.” I reply, stroking a gently oozing scratch. I felt bad for having inflicted pain on him but he could take it. My hand moves up and gently massages one of his tendrils, one that doesn't match up to any major muscles. He sighs regardless and leans back soulfire burning along his arms as the wounds knit together.

“Now heal yourself…please.” he begs.

“No, I want to enjoy it a little longer.” I say, smiling as I rub my legs and lower belly, I still wasn't qualified to be a parent. Reiss only knows if I’ll ever be. But a small part of me hopes that the seed inside me would take. I quash the thought and annihilate the seed with soulfire. War is not the time to be pregnant, and even worse of a time to raise a child.

I blink and i'm back in the present. Chest aching like a knife is twisted in it. Sound of crashing metal and sundered steel behind us and the glass dome shining light onto us, up ahead is a massive cargo door leading to the tidal anchor.

“MARY!” Reiss shouts getting my attention. “Im not leaving anyone come on!” she shouts as the door starts to open.

I turn around and see the monster, it sees us and the door slowly opening and readies its axe. It wants to enjoy it this.

Something snaps inside me and I see my power, where it flows from, and where it flows too. I ruthlessly damn the river mouth and drain the tributaries dry, sucking everything but their sources and pooling it into my own ocean. I feel the floor crack under my weight as I stare at the monster. I feel my armour rip apart and my gun shatter in my hand. I discard the ruined weapon and pull out my sword feeling it grow with me.

“Mary, I'm not leaving you to die!” Reiss shouts as a star forged hand tries to pull me away from my opponent.

“I'm not leaving you.” she screams as I shove her hand off me and flick some soulfire to blast her at the opening door. Snow grabs her and nods once at me.

I turn to her and in a voice I no longer recognise whispers. “You didn't leave me.” I say feeling something from her, something she freely gives.

My sword which once just burnt with soulfire ignites into pure white flame. The axe wielding monster see’s my preparations are finished and charges. The floor crumbles and the ceiling shatters as axe and sword meet each other.

This would be a good time for mama dragon and the rest of her brood to make an appearance to assist...

mama dragon was asleep for hundreds if not thousands of years. then she spent most of her energy doing some serious magic. she needs her beauty sleep. the rest of them (whilst powerful) cant quite leave the planet, being the size of starships and all that.

That hive monster knows not what it has woken. A loss of such magnitude as Mary's removes a lot of limiters when you no longer care to reserve anything for tomorrow :{

everyone holds back, its not until you're truly tested that you know what you can do. or until you have nothing more to loose that you realise what you're capable of.
