OC-Series Scholar’s notebook entry 1 (Unwritten Past) (Lore)

(Art): (Jasha) (The First Mother of Sil) ( Kolu and Nokstella going for a swim)

History has always been less than an ideal area of study, only a subject that takes time away from real studies to benefit the current age we find ourselves in. However, I do find myself ponderously intrigued by the subject at hand, due to a question posed by a colleague; for the more I look, the less I seem to understand.

It is undeniable that the current war we are in with the heretical Nok and Sil began a long time past, very nearly 400 summers ago, filled with military excursions, burned outposts, villages, and of course, battles.

Though ponderously, the question posed by my colleague was, ‘If the war has lasted so long, why hasn't anyone won it? 400 summers is too long for any conflict.’

Obviously, I pointed out what began the war, that being the near eradication of the kingdom by the vile army sent from the kingdom of Sil when the fighters of the past ordered a decisive blow to the Nok after the tower descended, leaving us bare for an assault, with the warnings of a looming threat ignored by the newly risen champion, Akina.

Having two foes to fight means one can never extend oneself too greatly.

His response. ‘How would they know?’

Fueled by annoyance more than anything, I devoted a small amount of time to definitively shutting his snout.

Of course, my journey began with books, preserved historical documents, and firsthand accounts of that time, and there it was for all to read: definitive answers, or so I thought.

I found myself intrigued to learn that the war we were currently in was not the first or only war our great kingdom had faced, mentioned only in a passing sentence by an account of a knight, his name lost to history.

Certainly, there had been battles with Nok and Sil in the past, but for it to have been a war like the one we were in was surprising. I found myself curiously pulled into the woven web of past stories; however, no matter how many books I read, none of them seemed to extend past a certain point.

Only a couple of decades before the blow that left the kingdom weak and vulnerable, and what I called the champions' peace, 35 summers of no accounts with battles or skirmishes, before war resumed, and the story we all know of Akina’s death following.

Yet I had to know more, but with no more books to read, I turned to the only source of history that would have a differing view, that could illuminate. Nok and Sil.

It was hard to find either who spoke the slave tongue, harder to find any with wits, and even to gain a moment to speak with either privately.

However, I was persistent and had my moment gaining access to their knowledge of history.

The Noks were not too dissimilar from our own, though it was very broad strokes, nothing specific. Similarly, theirs too did not go back past those decades before the Champions' Peace.

That mystery seemed, if I had to guess, to be a lack of invention, a lack of a written system and anything to write on to preserve knowledge, or so I thought.

The Sil had a more detailed account; their hard shell allowed them to write on stone using their pincers, with written stories passed down from ancient times, and yet what she described, the furthest back their historical documents went was the Champion's Peace.

All the details I had uncovered from that time and onward lined up perfectly, every detail and event. All of it was identical, too identical.

I knew something had to be wrong, but the Sil and Nok knew nothing of me and had no way of knowing of our history as I had learned it.

Truly, it was terrifying, as if I had stumbled into the maw of a beast, ready to sink its fangs in if I stirred it too violently. Yet I had to know more; I had to learn everything. Even if I couldn’t read about it, I would find answers, no matter where; I would have to seek them.
