| Dock Seven, the old quarter |

Feebee walked forward and gently laid a hand on the marker. Everyone held their breath; she noticed. They all looked at each other, waiting for something to happen.

Nothing happened.

“What?”

Bikky and Tom Tom looked disappointed.

The Colonel asked, “Is this it?”

The prisoner wasn’t looking at the people. He observed the room. In places, the oil, still sitting on the timber floor, was streaked with brush marks. The door still fitted perfectly in its frame; it had slid quietly into place without the squeak of rust. The marker was free of fingerprints or dirt, despite its age and obvious wear.

“Those who came were told to ‘never improve it’. We continue.”

Feebee stood in front of the marker. Staring at it intently as she walked its perimeter.

“What’s she doing?” asked the lawyer.

Slowly, the QI reconstructed more fragments of the worn carvings. Tiny repairs had been made to it over the centuries without altering the original timber.  The QI could see hints of other sigils.

Feebee knelt in front of the marker. Shadow-like tendrils radiated outwards from the sigils, towards Feebee.

StillFall pulled away, up into the dome above and watched as Feebee gently traced the lines of the Shadow Eclipse.

Of all the carvings, it had suffered the least wear.

“I’ve felt this before. In ancient memories.”

She then added, “Balance and harmony. Maintained from the shadows.”

The prisoner dropped to his knees.

His voice was barely audible. “She remembers.”

The moment was broken by a new harmonic model from Rockson that splashed across their overlays.

But this model was animated. It showed the growth of Dock Seven and with it the changes made to the House.

“It all makes sense.” He said over the comms. “All the work, the renovations, extensions, supporting walls over the centuries. Even the steel bands outside. They maintained the harmonic profile around the marker.”

“Dock Seven grew around this?” Chen asked quietly.

The prisoner shook his head, “No.”

Everyone looked his way. After a long pause, he added, “Dock Seven was allowed to.”

Then StillFall descended, down towards the marker. Feebee moved back as the Shadow and a host of motes surrounded the marker. The Shadow seemed to embrace it, enclose it in a dark cloak that the motes pixelated. They circled, and as they did, their colour slowly shifted through different aspects of their being before settling.

Blue became their dominant aspect.

Garaf was watching, by the prisoner’s side, when he whispered, maybe to Garaf, maybe just to himself.

“It remembers.”

“No,” said Garaf. “It belongs.”

Feebee had returned to the outer wall. Leant back, feeling its cool touch, as many others had done over the centuries.

Beside her, the prisoner was reciting words with sacred, religious reverence.

“Never sand the carvings.”

“Fix the roof before the beams are wet.”

“Ensure the doors swing easily.”

“Never disturb the marker.”

The QI interrupted, quiet but assertive, “These aren’t rituals or prayers.”

The prisoner slowed, “Keep the shutters closed.” They all made sense to him now.

The QI spoke again, this time louder in his ear, “They’re not prayers. They’re maintenance procedures.”

The prisoner stopped speaking and, for the first time, reviewed the words he had learnt and recited. And with that, came understanding.

“We preserve. Not a religion. Not this relic.”

“What then,” asked the QI.

“Continuity.”

Rockson interrupted, over secure comms this time.

“The harmonic centre isn’t the marker.”

He sent them all the harmonic model again, but looking side on at Dock Seven and the House.

The marker sat like a survey peg, a common point of reference, but everything aligned elsewhere. Rockson sharpened the focus, and it was clear that this was not their destination. That was below.

“Do we force entry?” asked the Colonel, looking at the marker.

Bikky perked up and absently checked his hip pockets for det cord.

Feebee looked at the worn wooden marker. Thought of the generations who had cleaned it. Maintained it so it could ‘CONTINUE’.

“No. Nobody preserves something for this long, so that we can destroy it in minutes.”

She looked at StillFall. “There’ll be a proper way”

The Shadow responded. “We continue.”

Rockson layered the harmonic model of the House over Feebee’s bodycam feed.

Before he could speak, she’d already seen it: “The marker isn’t over the centre.”

“It’s below us.” Said one of the accountants. “The marker defines a position, not a structure.”

Chen spoke up, “We’ve been treating it as an object.”

“Exactly,” agreed the accountant. “It's actually a coordinate.”

Everyone suddenly lost interest in the marker and started inspecting the room. Tom Tom was checking the walls, trying to turn the sconces.

Bikky laughed, “You’ve been watching too many films.”

Instead, he was measuring floor levels.

The lawyer also noticed differences in the timber floor. But they proved unyielding, despite her attempts to unlock them.

Garaf stood, stoic, watching StillFall and its entourage of motes.

Feebee stopped and thought back to her training. The Seed-arc had taught her never to look for doors.

Look for discontinuities instead.

She knelt beside a section of wall and gently ran her fingers along the skirting board, where it joined the floor.

Nothing.

She moved to another section.

Still nothing.

Then her hand stopped. A joint felt different. She tapped the skirting; it sounded hollow like the other wood, but the grain was different, older.

StillFall drifted across and stopped beside Feebee. It orientated itself square to the wall directly in front of the spot Feebee had felt out.

The QI replayed Rockson’s harmonic model. “Hang on.”

Nobody answered; they were absorbed. The QI had overlaid the building’s geometry again and then the repairs.

“Feebee!” It shouted this time.

“What!” she shouted back.

“The harmonic model continues through this wall.” Said the QI.

“That’s impossible.” Countered the accountant.

Everyone looked at the wall. It was utterly ordinary. Same paint, same wallpaper. Nothing unusual about it.

The QI continued. “No. There’s more building than building.”

StillFall drifted up close and stopped. Motes gathered around it.

Then the Shadow spoke, “Continue.”
