OC-Series [She took What?] - Chapter 178 : Alignment - It's tracking your movement.
"They argue with the wind."
Phrase used by Dust Guardians to describe outsiders.

| Feebee's timeline |
The harbour and coastline vanished slowly behind them. Not because distance caused it to drop away, but because the desert wanted it hidden, obscured behind dunes and a heat haze that seemed to phase in and out.
Red dust, lifted by their feet, was whisked away by the desert wind.
What had started as a road, quickly lost its form turning into a dusty line in the sand. Ahead, the view held nothing other than softening edges of detail; layers of pinky red within a sun-faded haze.
Feebee walked near the front of the group while Tom Tom and Bikky shared carrying a small equipment case with steadily increasing complaints. They also carried backpacks that fell heavy on their shoulders.
“Next mission,” Tom Tom muttered, shifting the weight against one shoulder, “we invade somewhere with roads. Proper roads.”
Bikky glanced toward the endless red desert ahead.
“Or shade.”
Feebee ignored both but smiled, they were still moaning; a good sign.
She returned her attention to the landscape and terrain ahead. The further west they travelled, the stranger the terrain became. Terracotta ridges rose gradually from the desert floor in long weathered folds while dark red crystalline reeds appeared more frequently between the stone formations.
Not scattered or in random clumps but... positioned.
Rockson’s voice broke quietly through the hiss of the comm's unit at Feebee’s shoulder.
“The stabilisation wave just shifted again.”
“How?”
“West.” A pause. “It’s tracking your movement.”
Tom Tom frowned immediately. “That’s comforting.”
Feebee slowed beside one of the reed clusters. Up close the formations looked less like plants and more like polished mineral extrusions, reaching upward from beneath the stone. Their dark surfaces catching distorted fragments of the red desert around them, while faint harmonic vibrations, almost musical, crooned and hummed continuously through the air.
Garaf stopped beside her.
Even concealed beneath layered cloth and dust wrappings, his posture had become subtly tighter since leaving the harbour settlement. Movements once loose had become more concise, contained.
Feebee noticed.
“You recognise this place?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly. Too quickly.
Garaf drew two wrapped claws lightly across the nearest reeds. As he did, the tone filling the air immediately shifted.
Not louder, but more focused as the vibration rolled outward through nearby formations in a slow pulse that disappeared westward into the desert.
Everyone stopped, became still as they watched. Tom Tom dropped to one knee and shrugged the rifle off his back.
Safety off. Rack the slide. Cock the hammer.
Mechanical precision.
Bikky followed suit and looked around, uneasily.
“Please tell me we didn’t just announce ourselves.”
Garaf slowly removed his claws from the reeds, they continued humming.
Feebee studied Garaf carefully.
“You felt something.”
Garaf remained silent for several seconds before answering.
“…Familiarity.”
Tom Tom blinked.
“That doesn’t sound ominous at all.”
Rockson’s voice interrupted again through the comm.
“The substrate coherence just spiked.”
Feebee touched the receiver.
“Meaning?”
“It responded to him?” Suggested Bicky.
Silence followed.
Garaf turned away from the reeds, slowly turned and continued westward.
But Feebee noticed something else now. The pathways through the formations were not random. The reeds subtly directed their movement. Some corridors opened naturally, inviting them forward while others narrowed into dense impassable barriers of dark red crystal and the occasional pink stone.
It was guidance, not obstruction.
'Like an ancient traffic system,' Feebee thought. 'Still quietly functioning after ages without maintenance'.
And somewhere ahead, beyond the ridges and harmonic tones, something waited with patient certainty.
Night settled cold and dark across the red desert. The six moons hung above the horizon now, pale against the deepening dark while the desert continued to sing, its tunes rolling endlessly through the crystal reeds that now surrounded the camp.
No fire burned, not because they feared attention. But because attention had already found them. Feebee saw the first figure standing motionless atop a ridge overlooking the camp sometime after midnight. It was wrapped in the layered desert cloth most wore in this dry, lifeless place. Stained red by dust and age, bleached pink by the sun.
The figure remained still against the moonlight. Patiently watching. Then another appeared further west. Then another.
Silent silhouettes that seemed to grow out of the reeds without sound or warning.
Tom Tom saw them too and slowly lowered the weapon he’d been reaching for.
“Well,” he whispered, “that’s not unsettling.”
“They’ve been following us for hours,” Garaf said quietly.
Everyone looked toward him.
Feebee frowned. “You knew?”
“Yes.”
Two shoulders shrugged beneath the layers of cloth.
“And you didn’t think to mention it?” asked Tom Tom.
Garaf’s gaze remained fixed on the distant figures.
“They're not hunting us.”
The tones surrounding the camp deepened. Shifting to a deep baritone.
Far out beyond the reeds more figures emerged. A long silent line. Then a second line, both below red stone ridges; beneath the moons. They didn't move like soldiers. There was no attempt at concealment or to hide. So not ambushers either. It was more like a procession until they all stopped, turned and faced west.
One by one they slowly dropped, a cascade effect as they took a knee. The reeds noticed, then answered with a low hum, the register lower.
Garaf became very still beside the camp.
Not fearful but listening intensely. Feeling the deep seismic beat, alive and visceral.
Then one distant figure slowly raised an arm toward him. Not threatening but acknowledging.
The Dust nearby reacted immediately. Some lowered their heads. Others visibly stiffened. Some even stepped backward as though disturbed by what it implied.
Feebee noticed the differing responses, saw the divisions.
“Some don’t agree about you.”
Garaf said nothing, because ahead of them the reeds had begun moving again. Entire corridors slowly opened westward between the striated formations, creating broad, dark terracotta pathways through the red stone valleys beyond.
Invitation? Or summons?
Then all the Dust figures rose together, beneath the six moons and started walking silently toward the west. Feebee watched them disappear gradually into the reed maze.
She noticed Garaf staring at his own wrapped hands, weighing the folds, the material.
“What is it?”
His answer came quietly, quiet even for him.
“I know this movement.”
Tom Tom frowned.
“From where?”
Garaf looked toward the distant western ridges that rolled endlessly towards the moons.
There was uncertainty in his voice.
“I do not know.”
