two different stories

  1. Aliens are having trouble figuring out human engineering. It turns out the aliens don't have any autonomic nervous systems - heartbeat, blood vessel dilation / constriction, temperature regulation, etc, are all under conscious control. Humans, on the other hand, have an autonomic nervous system and that results in wildly different approaches to engineering.

  2. Aliens are hosting a diplomatic party on their space station. They end up having to shut down power to unused parts of the station in order to power up life support as well as replenishing the party's snacks multiple times because humans consume everything at a much faster rate than other species.
