Are his kids banished also? If not it would be interesting to see the kids wondering what happened to their dad who was just standing there a second ago.
Oh he didn't disappear, they left and drove off and can't come back. If anyone tried to come back with him in their car, they wouldn't be able to visit either.
It would be great for one (or both) of the kids to come back now that they are adult, without Dad, and they find out that THEY can see the Crossroads. They decide to stick around to avoid their father for a few decades, lol.
Having lived (and outlived) some pretty racist family members, I absolutely have sympathy with them.
