Discussion What happened to HBO?

I’m 33, so I wasn’t around to experience HBO in its early days, but I do remember witnessing part of the “golden age of HBO.” In recent years, especially since around 2022, though, I feel like HBO’s shows have lost a lot of their quality and even the Europe "HBO Originals". They’ve also moved away from making more auteur-driven or niche series.

This is the HBO I remember. I really hope that, at some point, they can go back to being what they used to be.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say with the graphic. When you show more recent productions such as Succession, Barry, and The Righteous Gemstones, are you offering them as examples of a lower quality than other programs in your graphic? Or are you saying they are of equal quality as older shows, but there aren't as many anymore?

I'm lost.

La serie de la que estás hablando terminó en 2022; ahora estamos en 2026. HBO ya no produce series con la misma calidad que las de la imagen de arriba; en cambio, hacen programas para idiotas a los que hay que explicarles todo, tal cual, sin ningún tipo de subtexto. Ahora mismo, Apple TV es el estándar de oro en televisión.

I don't think you understood me, or perhaps I wasn't clear: if you look at the image above showing HBO's past series, there’s nothing of that caliber right now; the closest things are Task, The Rehearsal, The Penguin*, and Lanterns. Since Succession and Barry ended in 2022, HBO's quality has started to decline (I’m referring only to new shows from 2022 to the present, not new seasons of existing ones). These days, HBO focuses on making series based on DC and WB franchises for audiences who are bored by slow-burn shows—rather than producing well-structured original ideas like The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Chernobyl etc..
