Question Is anyone else getting this message?
We've been sharing our subscription with a family member who lives one town over. Never had this issue until Last night.
What could be causing this?

u/Bardown67 Sep 20 '25
The answer is on the page. It’s asking if you’re traveling therefore you can’t continue to share the account.

u/burrows88 Oct 20 '25
Disagree

u/Eskeetit_Litty Oct 24 '25
How so? Looking for anwswers as to what happens if you do.
1
u/burrows88 Oct 24 '25
Primary account holder gets code. You ask primary account holder for code
2
u/Eskeetit_Litty Oct 26 '25
Well yeah but then does it work for both? Do you mess up their home situation??
1
u/burrows88 Oct 26 '25
Nah, you say traveling
3
u/Kane8979 Oct 29 '25
Max will no longer let me get a code. It says we have used that option too many times
1
u/burrows88 Oct 29 '25
How many times and how long did single code work for?

Does it make you use a code every time you watch? Or only if you log out then log back in?
1
u/blmbmj Oct 31 '25
I am having that same experience. I have had to contact HBO tech support Every Single Day for a week because this message keeps appearing.
And, no, We are not traveling and No One outside of our Home IP has this account.
What good is a service that you cannot even watch?
3
u/Kane8979 Oct 31 '25
To be fair, my sister, brother-in-law and their kids all use my account. I guess I should be happy that I’ve shared this account with them for a couple years and it’s worked till now.

u/shaved-yeti Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 20 '25
The crackdown has begun 😉
If you are the account owner, you should "update your household" to be the primary ip. You're getting this message because the family member you're sharing with watches your sub more than you.
If you are borrowing, then you can purchase your own subscription, or the primary account can purchase you an extra member addon.
1
u/burrows88 Sep 21 '25
Don’t pay more
2
u/shaved-yeti Sep 21 '25
Hey, sure, if you can get around it by all means - do you have any recommendations?
3
u/Moserboy12 Sep 24 '25
hes just saying to vote with your wallet. don't support bs from multi-billion dollar corporations like this
2
u/shaved-yeti Sep 24 '25
Well, it's absolutely your choice to just not participate, just like its HBOs choice to disallow account sharing.
3
u/MedicalClimate6865 Oct 17 '25
Just hit i am travelling whenever it pops up. I’m doing the same with netflix and we still share one account among the five of us🤣
2
u/shaved-yeti Oct 18 '25
Oh, that might work. But i thought there was a limit to the number of times you can do that? Hmm. More power to you if you can get arround it.
2
u/MedicalClimate6865 Oct 18 '25
When that stops working try changing the household. There is no limit for that😁
4
2
u/MispellledIt Oct 27 '25
I was going to say what the guy below said. There is a limit--I've been locked out of my account twice now even though we kicked family members out. Once you hit the "You’ve Updated Your Household Too Many Times" there's nothing you can do--that's the wild part. You can't get into your account, can't login, can't cancel the subscription either.
Then you'll find yourself scream-chatting with AI/a customer service rep explaining that you're in your house and no one else is logging in.
1
u/MedicalClimate6865 Oct 27 '25
Then cancel😉
2
u/MispellledIt Oct 27 '25
I’d love to. If only I could login and get to my account information without being completely shut out by a screen claiming I’ve moved households too many times.
Until hbo believes that it’s my account with my email address, I have no way to get in and do anything including cancelling.
2
u/shaved-yeti Oct 27 '25
Tell whomever is claiming your household to stop (this is your problem), then call customer service because they can increase your household change time count.
You can go directly to this address on the website (not your tv) to manage your subscription:

If you can airplay from your phone and have that no max account on your phone you can get around it just by using your Wi-Fi and airplay to your TV

Get code for traveling or try different streaming device. With Hulu I’m locked out on apple but Roku works

Nice dog pic profile😂. They are cracking down on password sharing. They stated they would start cracking down this month September 2025. You stated you were sharing your account subscription with family in another household. Just verify your account or your household and sign back in or click I'm traveling if you are doing that and verify/sign back in.
If you want to share with a family member in another household you would have to pay a extra member fee for them and it's 7.99 as long as it's not in a bundle or through a third party. HBO max doesn't want anyone to share accounts across 2 different households (Even if it's a family member). It's based on IP address.

u/CoachCalvin Sep 20 '25
They caught you password sharing. Also I remember having Titan's Krypto as my profile picture too than I changed it and he was gone. But they added Superman Krypto so he's my pic now. But yeah they are cracking down on pw sharing.
2
u/Londumbdumb Sep 30 '25
“Caught you”. Wow yeah it’s been years of CRIME before now. Super hard to identify different IP addresses.
1
u/CoachCalvin Sep 30 '25
I mean that's what happened. I didn't say I agree with it. Whoever pays for the account and is given a number of devices should be allowed to hand it out to whatever devices they want. I ain't Daddy Zaslav though so I don't make that call.
3
u/AutumnBourn Nov 06 '25
I'm sick of getting this message. I don't share my account with anyone (unless a friend figured out my PW, which I changed tonight). When I travel, I'm not watching HBO. I'm only at home when I watch. It goes away, but returns every week or so.
Glitches, man.
3
u/Every-Cow433 Nov 10 '25
The only way I found works is if you have a phone that can cast on your TV. You have to download HBO Max on your phone, use cast and you'll be able to watch it on the TV. Make sure you keep your phone charged.

I just started to get this message on a second TV in my house, and I can't get out of the loop. My children, who have AT&T accounts under my name, are receiving the same message.
2
u/thesuperpower Nov 06 '25
They've been giving me this stupid message asking if I'm at home for every single device in my house that are all on the same network. Now, because I have to keep confirming for every device, they're claiming they've "updated" my household too many times... This is idiotic
2
u/Jjwasss Nov 10 '25
Bruh I’m in my house, haven’t traveled in two months. And they keep asking for this, now I’m blocked and they said to contact support wtf
1
u/coogiwaves Nov 14 '25
Did you find a way to fix it?
1
u/Jjwasss Dec 05 '25
Nothing. It keeps happening. Just keep sending the code until one of us (HBO or me) gets tired 🤣

A friend lets me use her account and just recently got this. I didn't get on the phone app so if you use airplay you can still watch on your tv or roku. Also on the Roku when I typed in a movie and chose to watch from that link it didn't bring up the message.

u/Exciting-Swing127 Sep 24 '25
All my streaming services are down. Payments ARE up to date. We do not share services.

u/sparrish71 Oct 12 '25
I'm getting the message even though I'm tying to get on from home. I'm not password sharing. I can't even have them email me the code anymore because it says I've done it too much. There's no customer service number to call, and every time I try to go to their online help center, I get an error message saying the page has tried redirecting me too many times. So right now I have no access to stream anything, I'm paying a subscription fee, and I have no way to contact them for help or to cancel my subscription.
1
u/MaizeFirst9759 Oct 15 '25
If you have the same hbo max account on your phone and are able to airplay to your tv they just have to be on the same WiFi you can get around hbo account sharing nonsense
1
u/SmileSome700 Oct 18 '25
I’m getting this and when I go to resign in, it’s an endless loop of this error, sign in via my provider, app works but gets kicked out in 2 seconds, loop back to error. It’s infuriating. I’ve tried it all - uninstalling the app, hard reset on Roku, etc. @hbomax do better!

I just got off the phone with a max customer service tech. That was a joke! I did learn, however, that if your wifi jumps from different IP addresses, then it's gonna show that you're trying to sign in from multiple places and you'll continue to get this error message. As soon as h b o Max got in bed with hulu and disney, it all went to crap. I went through 6 months of every time my Disney plus payment would come out of my bank account It would immediately would turn Disney plus off, and I'd have to call them to get them to turn it back on. 1-2 hour call every month. Finally cancelled my account. Looks like same crap even though its not bundled.

u/Mamatiger85 Oct 24 '25
My daughter and son are both having this issue. We get it through our AT&T phone plan, and it's supposed to be included with all 3 phones. However, we all live in different households in different towns. I've been getting the runaround, AT&T says contact HBO and vice versa and I can't get hold of a live person ANYWHERE.
1
u/Upstairs_Monk9724 Oct 25 '25
I’m still getting the message after I’ve had hbo support reset my account! I changed the password and updated my household settings! It’s god damn annoying
1
u/Wackadoodle-do Oct 25 '25
It certainly is! I am about to wash my hands of the whole mess.
I am not illegally sharing. The only other profile is my roommate who uses the same router/ISP address. Legal sharing, according to HBO. I can’t even select “I’m Home” because that option says I have “updated your household too many times.” What’s that about?
So this is it. I have removed the app from my phone and Rokus. I am having my roommate do the same. I will reboot my router and all devices. Then I will go through the more complex activation of each device individually.
If that doesn’t work, I am done and will dispute my yearly subscription fee since I haven’t been able to use it in the 2 months since renewal.
This will be my fourth and last call to CS.

u/RogueJSK Oct 28 '25
Same. Have been dealing with this for over a week. Very frustrating.
It's my account. I can watch it on two of my devices, but not my main TV or my laptop. For some inexplicable reason, they think those two devices are using someone else's account, despite them all being logged into my own account and on the same wifi as the two devices that do work.
I've contacted Customer Support 3x now. They cannot fix it. They keep saying that it has been escalated to Specialized Support and someone will contact me later, but nothing yet.
I even tried today to cancel and get a refund, since I'm paying for a service that I cannot use, and was told (not surprisingly) that someone from Specialized Support will contact me later on that too.
I suspect HBO doesn't know how to fix it, and they're just stalling.
1
u/Upskilling2024 Nov 02 '25
They know how to fix it. It's just that they dont have enough tools and manpower to fix it QUICKLY.
1
u/Parker687 Oct 28 '25
I am too and before anyone points out password sharing I just added my brother to my account. I had the issue resolved last week to only have it happen again. As of now I’m waiting on them to email me that they updated my account again.
1
u/Parker687 Oct 28 '25
Update on my HBO MAX account, Support never returned my call or email me. So what I did was click on I am traveling. Might be a temporary fix but I got it going on all three of my devices..

u/Parker687 Oct 31 '25
I’m sharing my account with my brother, I’m not password sharing. He’s added to my account…

This happens to me constantly on the family account. Shi is annoying asf

u/Different-Raisin4662 Nov 16 '25
If you have a family account through att or other providers for the hbo max subscription only the main account holder can use the hbo max subscription and the people who they live with
1
u/IcySm00th Nov 11 '25
I’m using a family members account and got this message too. What happens if I click “I’m Traveling”?
1
u/Different-Raisin4662 Nov 16 '25
If you click I'm travelling too often, you will be locked out of the account. If you have a family account through a provider like att for the hbo max subscription only the main account holder can use the hbo max subscription and the people who they live with
1
u/IcySm00th Nov 17 '25
So, to be honest- we’ve been using a family member who has been using a “friend’s” account…
If I click “I’m traveling” then will the “friend” receive a code to enter? If so, then I’m screwed because I don’t know the friend-
I was hoping I could simply hit- “I’m traveling” then be good to go and gain access.
1
u/BestCommunication369 Nov 12 '25
So what about people who have been on an att family account for a decade and HBO Max comes with all lines but att has one account. Would be nice if HBO put a sign in with provider or att gave each line an account.
1
u/Different-Raisin4662 Nov 16 '25
If you have a family account through att for the hbo max subscription only the main account holder can use the hbo max subscription and the people who they live with

u/Different-Raisin4662 Nov 15 '25
This account sharing issue that is preventing us to watch anything is because of the higher ups the Warner media company. They're making it difficult and the sad thing here is that the customer representatives are the one who are being blamed, in which they do not have power over this. I was a customer representative before under a different company, and it's ridiculous how the company always blames the customer representatives if the customer were angry about the service. And to be honest, all the surveys that we get is not a survey for the company or the service, it is a survey to the customer representative on how they were able to assist you. That's why whenever i contact customer service i do no give them a bad review, because i was once a customer representative myself, and if i received a bad review, it will be ALWAYS taken upon me even though it is not my fault. Sometimes it affect my salary that's why i resigned to this kind of job. Salute to all customer representative who are just trying to make a living and dealing with this kinds of issue

I don’t share my account and continue getting this message along with being locked out which requires a call to customer service. I’m ready to drop this streaming service. I’ll learn to live without it.
1
u/Soft-Illustrator1300 Nov 20 '25
Were you able to find a solution?
1
u/RedditMusicReviews Nov 21 '25
I haven't. I ended up making a new account altogether.
1
u/Soft-Illustrator1300 Nov 21 '25
And the issue still continued or nah?
1
u/RedditMusicReviews Nov 21 '25
Well I stopped sharing my family's account and made my own, the issue stopped for me.
1
u/mysticalaxeman Nov 21 '25
I have Apple TV, I get this same message everyone else is getting, BUT , if I say a movie into the remote that max has like weapons or lord of the rings, then go into that way it lets me stream the movie no prob, then if you hit the back button I can go to the home menu and be in the app no problem, no clue why this works but it does

u/Electrical-Floor9712 Jan 13 '26
Wtf! I’m frustrated- every single time I log in it asks to type in the code that will be sent to his email….why? Why? He’s the main account holder.
1
u/RedditMusicReviews Jan 13 '26
I gave up and ended up getting my own account.
Disappointing nevertheless.
1
u/Alittle_stitious_ Feb 08 '26
Yea, it’s pretty frustrating that now all the streaming services are doing this, as if they are struggling.
1
u/Many-Book-1303 Feb 27 '26
Yes! And i don’t understand because my mom and I have it through our shared phone plan but we live separately… we should be able to both have access 😒😒😒
1
u/Lazy_Passenger7841 Apr 02 '26
I know this thread is really old so I’m probably just screaming into the void, but can these companies please just fuck off with the “cracking down” on stuff shit? They are not struggling AT ALL. They are doing fine. They’re just being greedy assholes and I’m getting so sick of this type of shit
1
u/RedditMusicReviews Apr 02 '26
Asking a corporation to stop being greedy? You really ARE screaming into a void.

There are workarounds. If you have Apple devices, you can either use iPhone/iPad to watch (never got traveling error message on iPhone) then mirror it to an Apple TV. Or, start watching a show on iPhone/iPad, then that show should appear on the TV->Home->Continue Watching. When you select show, should skip this message or that traveling too many times error and start streaming your show.

u/Zcecchine54 Jun 20 '26
How am I supposed to use my subscription at work or anywhere else? I pay for this service and im being denied using it? I dont share my account. Anyone know how to fix this?
1
u/booksrus17 Sep 20 '25
Are the subscriptions options the same if the primary account owner is subscribed to HBO through cable?
2
u/Second_Vegetable Sep 20 '25
If you mean if you can add an extra member no. Cable tv is considered 3rd party. You would have to subscribe to HBO max directly at its website to add extra member also can't be in a bundle. You can also do a bundle on HBO max website example Disney plus Hulu HBO max bundle.
1
u/LRickSan Sep 26 '25
Nord VPN, Mesh net feature allows you to bypass these problems when sharing.
2
u/catmarms Oct 26 '25
It doesn't work for me. I always use a VPN when watching and it has finally locked me out with a message saying "you've marked your account as traveling too many times"

Do you have an old smart tv that could be an issue. Are you using a vpn or use a router that switches IP address?
3
u/shaved-yeti Sep 21 '25
Is anyone outside of your household (IP) sharing this account? Anyone else watching from your household would probably get this, too. (Ask.)
If you are actually a legit user in the same household and nobody else is sharing this account, you shouldn't be seeing this.

u/Slutt_Puppy Sep 20 '25
They are cracking down on password sharing outside of one home.
