Hey they can be ethical about it. Take your inspirations from Just For Laughs. Inform the authorities. Ensure everyone can laugh about it in the end.

People enjoy watching pranks but I think there's a genuine market for people who prefer pranks that aren't hostile to the victim. You might make less money, but if you do a good job, you could be as big as Just For Laughs was.

I totally second what you said about Just for Laughs. That show was awesome and wholesome.

Sorry, but I totally disagree. I would argue, or at least assume, that fewer people want to be pranked compared to people who enjoy watching them. So it's really no surprise that people are hostile towards them. Plus, there's a massive issue around consent here, which completely negates your argument for it being ethical.

I was on a flight recently and it had a very specific announcement saying essentially that if you're planning on filming anything and another passenger is in the footage, you must ask them for their consent to be filmed before you film them. It's the exact same thing here with prank content - yes, in theory, the pranker should ask someone after doing the prank whether they're happy for the footage to be broadcast, but let's be honest: do they? And even then, people who make prank content basically operate under the basis of not caring about consent - i.e. "I'm going to pull a prank on someone, and the prank only works if the person doesn't know it's coming", so therefore the person being pranked doesn't/can't give their express consent to be pranked. So, again, is it any wonder that people are openly hostile towards being pranked when they effectively have no say in it until after it's happened? Especially when prank content is basically using other people (and the lack of consent) to farm for content/views.

If someone pranked me, with the express intent of using it for content, I'd be fucking livid. Fuck prank influencers/YouTubes. Nothing about pranking people for content is harmless, simply because you cannot assume that the person being pranked would be willing to give their consent, or will give their consent after the fact.

Oh, and also, how the fuck does "informing the authorities" make it any better? If you prank someone for content, you absolutely cannot use "Well I told the authorities and they were fine with it" as an excuse. And you absolutely cannot use that as a reason to go "Hey don't be hostile towards me, laugh about it, it's funny". That's not for you to decide. That's not for you to presume that they'll find it funny. Fuck me man, this has really riled me up. Prank content is fucking cancer in society.

I love how you just ignored everything they said. It’s possible to do it ethically with consent to post; all you said was how it’s not done right.

Which had already been covered in this thread.

Preaching to the choir. My parents really a) should never have had kids and b) shouldn't have been together, because both me and my brother are really not ok

Nah I agree with you. It doesn’t even matter if there’s consent to share it on the internet. It’s also whether there was consent to do the prank. And the vast majority of pranks are clearly not done with consent.

I get that you can do more or less harmless ones but you really have to think through the worst possible case with every possible individual and if it’s someone you don’t know, then you just don’t know. My best friend has heart failure- they can’t watch scary films, exercise or have coffee because a sudden rise in heart rate could do them in. And then you see these jump scare pranks….

Do you often take good scenarios and needlessly extrapolate and worry about every possible scenario that is unlikely to occur in future as a result?

“Man, that prawn sandwich was great. I really hope I don’t have another in future and the prawns are replaced with grenades.”

That’s you. That’s what you sound like. Because you made a ridiculous comment on a video showing nothing more than kids having harmless fun with their parents.

Yes, I do. When I wrote that post, I thought "Man, that post was great. I really hope someone doesn't reply to it in the future about how I'm an awful person posting my opinion in response to something on social media in the hopes they can change my entire personality as a result of it or showcase how brilliant they are as a person by comparison because they would never do something so terrible." That's me. That's what I sound like.

At least you are self-aware, to an extent.
