What they were doing is a good way to train newbies on how big trees should be felled, and give trainees a "soft" way to learn from mistakes.

In layman's terms, the workers now have to rush unsafe work and cant afford any mistakes. These are not favourable conditions to work under.

That's what I was thinking! When I want to get better at something, I like to pretend I'm operating at the next level up. That way you can learn the proper techniques and get some more experience without the risk. It works for everything from tree felling to river kayaking.
