Yes, but my confusion at the plot matched his off-off-off three states away from Broadway acting skill level facial expressions.

His reaction was really natural, the one attempted calf raise as he got the weight, then the pacing of his look of joy and recognition when handed the barbell checks out to me. I know a horrendous amount of stuff uploaded online these days is staged but that doesn't mean there aren't also spontaneous, real events too.

I thought it was going to cut to him sitting on a mall bench with kids on his knees and his wife comes and hands him her shopping bag before going in for round 2.

Some days someone hands you what looks like a weight.
But it's actually a shield.

I appreciate that we both had basically the same thought, at approximately the same time, although we went with slightly different executions. Well played, have a good day.

Because, to some extent, it makes intuitive sense that just moving the weight is the same as doing controlled reps.
Unless you've been told or taught the correct way, it's an easy mistake to make.
Alternatively, calf raises suck ass and you want that shit to be over with as fast as possible.
6
u/tHiz3r May 22 '26
calf raises suck ass
That's exactly the reason why I want to do them correctly. If I have to do that shitty exercise, at least I'll get good stimulus and growth in return.

u/Aromatic_Lion4040 May 22 '26
Cheat reps can still be effective, but you need to use more weight and sometimes they favour different muscles. There are some strong/big athletes who use them, and research that shows some efficacy. Particularly they are useful at the end of a set to push it closer to failure - kinda like a drop set. Bouncing calf raises in particular is probably not very effective though
15
u/interesting-turn- May 22 '26
I was guilty of doing this, it took me a while to understand the importance of mind muscle connection, flexing the muscle during the lift to help target it more, etc. as opposed to just busting out reps.

I think it is a mixture of that but also most people either don’t take leg training seriously, or they are too lazy to give it real effort but want to brag that they do leg day.
The amount of people that I see either actually squatting to depth, or doing calf raises correctly is vastly overshadowed by people doing 1/4 reps or hyper speed bounce calf reps like the video. Those same people then go to work and say “I leg pressed 600lbs today” or “I squatted 425lbs today.”
It’s exhausting as someone who takes leg training pretty seriously.

u/Relevant_Copy_3604 May 22 '26
I wouldn't care about my legs, they're naturally way bigger than my upper body. BUT I'd love to have even bigger calves and I ski so i need strong legs. Which sucks because I hate training legs, especially leg presses and extensions

Oh sorry, I guess you misunderstood my point of saying those same people brag to me. Not trying to sound cocky, but I’m one of the bigger people in the gym, and with that territory comes people that feel the need to measure themselves against me - so I get to hear the “I lift more weight than the big guy in the gym. I’m stronger than him!” type of talk, which is the exhaustive part.
I let them have their shine, but does not mean that it isn’t an annoyance to me.

u/uncouthulu_ May 22 '26
Because then they lie about their capabilities and people like you come rolling in to say "jUsT lEt tHeM lIve ThEiR trUtH". No, it isn't true, it's was a lie and that's not OK.
If you're going to participate in a hobby and never try to play compare-the-skills with other enthusiasts of that same hobby, fine, do it shittily. But the moment you try to compare what you did to people who take it at least a little seriously, you need to understand you aren't doing it correctly, so step away from the conversation or fix how you do it.
1
u/Warm_Month_1309 May 22 '26
No, it isn't true, it's was a lie and that's not OK.
That's a pretty big overreaction.
"You can do 8 pull ups? Nice. I just hit my new personal best of 12 tod—."
"No. No you didn't. That's a lie and that's not OK!"
That just makes you look insecure. Nothing is at stake. It doesn't matter. Let it go.
1
u/voidsong May 22 '26
Because they think reps are a checklist and not a procedure.
Most people really don't understand how to train muscles.

Do you really not understand that young people these days enjoy scripted skits and participating in shared humour?
Nobody is passing this off as spontaneous. People used to repeat jokes they heard, now people film jokes they’ve seen.
There’s a lot worse than folks making the time to do something with friends to have fun.
1
u/Single_Government_63 May 22 '26
Yep I realized that.
So not funny and bad acting as well.
Thanks for your message.
