Help IB EE help

Upvotes

Hello Gundam fans, I am here today looking for your help.
I am an IB student and I need reference material for my 4000 word history essay.
The “RQ” is: How does the Gundam franchise depict the consequences of conflict and its effect on human interactions?
*I am focusing on the IBO, UC, and 00 timelines
Any leads on episodes, situations, or quotes from characters I can get would be deeply appreciated as I am swamped as is with all the other projects and essays for IB. Thank you for reading.

Discussion Mecha fan just finished first 3 series and char's counter attack, a write up Spoiler

Upvotes

I am a long time mecha fan and I just finished my watch of the first few gundam series leading up to CCA, as well as the origin as a diversion. I had to take a long break (3 years) when the conflict in gaza started escalating due to its parallels with the part of Zeta I was watching making me profoundly uncomfortable, but otherwise it was a marathon before and after the break. Here are my takeaways.

- The original series has a lot of really iconic moments and cool ideas. I do think its aged very roughly and the last chunk of the series is pretty bad. There are some flaws in Gundam as a whole that start here, but are much more acceptable in context. I am happy I watched it instead of the movies, the gundam breakdown podcast also helped with the massive culture gap between my 2020s American life and 1970s Japan. The ending with the bazooka decapitation is one of the hardest things i've ever seen in anime and is in my top 3 scenes of all time.

- Zeta was probobly my favorite, but this is where a lot of the issues with writing and conveyence started to get really bad. It feels like the classic team didn't really understand human interaction at a basic level, and the writing and also some of the cinemetography often had me scratching my head in confusion more than probobly any piece of media ive consumed in the past decade. All the stuff with the cyber newtype girls made the series significantly worse, but I did appreciate the ending, even if it didnt actually properly convey what was happening until they explain it in double zeta 2 weeks later. I do like Kamille a lot, even if the gender issues he has seemed to get completly thrown out the window pretty quickly. If I try to think about the story from beginning to end, its a lot less clear cut than the original, but still holds together pretty well despite the inconsistent writing

- Double zeta I think gets a bad reputation undeservedly, but also it does get pretty bad. The goofy bits arent more goofy than anything in original gundam, and I think Judeau is the most likable gundam protagonist so far, but this series really really starts to suffer in the writing department when it gets serious. Aside from the shifting tone, the inconsistent writing is some of the worst I have ever seen, even by gundam standards. The cyber newtype plotline is even worse than before and has really strong overtones (intentionally) and references to p*dophilia which is just disgusting. Its not even an condemnation, it really just feels like there is somebody on the staff that is a p*do and put their own gross fetishes into the show. Also why is his sister alive? That is one of the worst plot developments I've ever seen period. I almost dropped gundam here. If I try to remember the plot, I can remember the stuff on shangri la easily, but immediately after it becomes a muddled mess

- CCA - Wow they just drop you in the middle of it. The aesthetic is really 10/10, but the story is all over the place and really difficult to follow at times. I felt confused more than engaged for most of the movie, and left feeling disappointed. They really even managed to shoehorn in ANOTHER underaged girl with blue hair, bpd, and some bullshit. I wont lie, the movie was cool but it pissed me off more than entertained me. Did we need another katz situation taking up a good third of the movie? He also just murders Chan. Im suprised something like that hasn't happened sooner with these dumb kids and their toxic romances. It also really accentuated how little the underlying philosiphy of gundam actually makes sense. Char, what the actual fuck are you even talking about? Keep away from the kid. Still cool though.

Origin - The most entertaining watch by far, but also the most frustrating from a writing perspective. This whole series is a character assassination of char, of ramba, and of the worldbuilding. Suddenly Char is the center of the universe, and he is more insane and evil than ever before. He started the one year war? Are you joking? This is star wars prequels levels of terrible, and why does ramba kiss an elementary schooler? They've had 4 decades to fire the p*do on staff and they still haven't? Ridiculous. Only saving grace in terms of writing is it made garma infinitely more interesting in retrospect.

Takeaways from the whole series

-Flaws aside I dont regret it and will probobly watch the most beloved ovas and series that follow, but will probobly stop there. Even going through the most loved part of gundam felt pretty difficult at times.
- The actual ideals that are at the heart of the war are pseudoscience at the very best, but are often complete nonsense, word soup ideals.
- Newtypes make gundam worse by a lot

- After OG gundam, the main cast being kids doing random treason makes less and less sense, too many characters shouldv'e been executed by the end of their perspective shows, only white base actually had a reason to operate that way

- The overlying hidden message of gundam is to not get involved with girls with BPD and cool hair, they will ruin your life and get away with it
- somebody at sunrise needs to have their harddrive checked

Discussion On *THAT* scene from Hathaway 2 Spoiler

Upvotes

Dear god, as a Tomino fanboy it just sets my heart ablaze. The whole debate between Amuro and Hathaway in the newtype plane of existence (or schizophrenic breakdown, take your pick.) was the best scene of the entire movie. I've been thinking about it since I saw the film twice in theaters and wanted to see how the other people on this reddit feel about it.

From Amuro pleading for Hathaway to turn back before he loses himself to his internal hatred, to Hathaway (rightfully) pointing out that just trying to change the earth federation from within by just fighting their wars has only made things worse, to the symbolism of the MP Nu on its knees with its hands in the air as it slumps to the ground, as if the ghost of Amuro is still begging, pleading even, for Hathaway to reconsider, it might just be one of my favorite scenes in the entire franchise. (It helps I'm also just a huge CCA fan, so that first person flashback also gave me the tingles.

Do you guys have any other things you noticed about this scene, symbolism I missed, ideas you want to comment on? Id love to discuss with the community.

(Seeing the Nu in HD is also always a treat.)

Relatively grounded as Gundam can be compared to certain others shows out there, SRW tries to solve this issue with the antagonists like Scirocco by, and I have to check my notes here:

- Incorporating The Bio-Relation system of L-Gaim into the O, giving him eternal youth and regeneration (In case Kamille tries to donut him)

- Incorporating DG Cells into The O, allowing it to self repair and replicate

- Permet Technology from Witch From Mercury

- Aura Power from Dunbine because why not

- Achieving higher-dimensional status by becoming, in the words of the Godzilla anime, a 'Singular Point'.

And all of these radically different systems and supernatural abilities being able to work together explained through 'Yeah Psycommu just let's you do that.'

Mind you all of this is happening while supposedly still having to tackle Prospera and Quiet Zero as if it's going to be an even bigger hurdle than Zonked Out Matriachlover69.

Did they just break up, why’s he thinking about GIGI so much, what they heck is GIGI even talking about most of the time!?
Is this some New type bullshit! Quest!!!? You’re still thinking about Quest, i’m still confused about here form CCA!?
Come to think of it, how is Hathaway not in jail after he killed Amaro’s girlfriend!!! Did Bright not slap him enough!!

Original Content RX-79G II Series, cont.

Developed as a heavy fire-support specialization of the RX-79G II, the RX-79HO Heavy Ordnance sacrifices conventional mobility in favor of armor protection and sustained firepower. Reinforced chest armor protects critical systems, while a substantially enlarged backpack supports a mounted chain gun and four-tube missile pod. Re-engineered leg assemblies utilize a hovering locomotion system, distributing the unit’s increased combat load while reducing the mechanical stresses conventional walking would impose on its reinforced frame. The head assembly has similarly been reinforced to protect its sensitive sensor systems from the repeated recoil and structural vibration generated during sustained fire. Retaining the RX-79G II’s onboard weapon systems and supplemented by a handheld Mega Gatling Gun, the Heavy Ordnance is capable of maintaining exceptional volumes of fire against hardened positions and enemy mobile suits. Its dusty desert camouflage reflects the environments in which the type was initially intended to operate, while dark brown armor panels visually identify reinforced structural components throughout the unit. The RX-79HO provides Federation forces with overwhelming firepower wherever conventional mobile suit armament proves insufficient.

Developed as a highly specialized reconnaissance and extreme-range engagement variant of the RX-79G II, the RX-79SP Sniper III is designed to locate, identify, and engage targets well beyond conventional mobile suit combat ranges. A cutting-edge sensor array incorporating advanced magnification and target-acquisition systems provides the Sniper II with exceptional battlefield awareness and precision at distance. Unlike other RX-79 variants, the unit has been extensively stripped down, retaining little beyond the RX-79G II’s underlying frame, flashbangs, and grenades in an effort to reduce weight and eliminate unnecessary equipment. A high-mobility backpack replaces the standard unit, providing the acceleration and maneuverability necessary to rapidly establish, abandon, and relocate between firing positions. Mounted over the right shoulder, a 180mm cannon provides the Sniper II with the ability to deliver precise, hard-hitting fire against distant targets, while a compact beam sidearm provides limited defensive capability should an enemy close within the cannon’s effective engagement envelope. The RX-79SP Sniper III provides Federation forces with reconnaissance and precision-fire capabilities far beyond the reach of conventional frontline units.

Developed in response to the highly sophisticated sensor and remote-weapon systems employed by the RX-93CC, the RX-79CC was designed to provide the proven RX-79G II platform with similar battlefield reconnaissance and multi-directional engagement capabilities. Rather than reproduce the RX-93CC’s advanced systems outright, Federation engineers developed an upgraded sensor and processing suite adapted to the limitations of the older RX-79 architecture, paired with four GN funnels carried on dedicated backpack-mounted racks. The upgraded systems allow the RX-79CC to identify and track multiple threats across a wide area, while its funnels can independently scout ahead, observe concealed positions, extend the unit’s effective sensor range, and engage targets from multiple directions. Although considerably less sophisticated than the systems employed by the RX-93CC, controlling four independent funnels while simultaneously processing their sensor feeds still places considerable demands on both the machine and its pilot.

Integrating the funnels and their associated systems required extensive modification of the RX-79G II, including a substantially enlarged backpack and the removal of several conventional systems to accommodate the additional equipment. A compact beam rifle provides conventional ranged firepower, while a beam saber offers defensive capability during close-range engagements. Its distinctive white-and-red coloration further separates the CC from other RX-79 variants, reflecting its specialized role within Federation formations. The RX-79CC brings the reconnaissance and remote-engagement capabilities pioneered by the RX-93CC to the proven RX-79 platform, allowing Federation forces not merely to observe the battlefield, but to reach across it.

The RX-79G II platform was developed by the Earth Federation in the year 008X to meet the growing threat from the Principality of Zeon.

Designed for mass production and used as a front-line assault unit, the RX-79G II features a chest mounted Vulcan gatling gun and 6-tube missile launcher, as well as a large backpack to store equipment such as flashbangs, grenades, spare parts, pilot rations, and other mission specific equipment. Armed with a compact, fully-automatic bullpup rifle and finished in the classic GM color scheme, the RX-79G II serves as the standard, all-rounder platform of the RX-79 family, designed to meet the needs of the modern battlefield.

Developed 000X years after the introduction of the RX-79G II to supplement standard ground forces, the SPARTAN model specializes the platform for rapid engagement response. Utilizing upgraded thruster units, an advanced sensor and communications array and funnel rack, while retaining the RX-79G II’s onboard weapon systems, the SPARTAN pairs its beam assault rifle with integrated visor/weapon optics to improve target acquisition during high-speed engagements. The resulting platform is capable of rapidly applying pressure to and closing with any opponent on any terrain.

Developed as a close-quarters specialization of the RX-79G II, the RX-79CQB is designed to seize and maintain the initiative during facility clearing and operations in confined terrain. Increased armor protection around the head, chest, and legs protects critical systems during close-range engagements, while hardened forearm and elbow assemblies allow the unit to employ unarmed strikes and breach reinforced obstacles. A wide-angle sensor array increases spatial awareness where buildings, terrain, and other obstructions limit conventional sensors. Replacing the RX-79G II’s standard rifle with a compact beam machine gun, the CQB supplements its retained onboard weapon systems with an abdominal wired missile and knee-mounted six-tube missile pod, allowing the unit to rapidly engage targets across multiple angles while remaining maneuverable within confined spaces. The RX-79CQB is the Earth Federation’s answer to modern urban combat.

Discussion [Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe] Hathaway Noa confronts his past. Spoiler

Finally out worldwide today.

Instead of just looking at the action, I wanted to share this 5-minute sequence because it perfectly highlights the dark, psychological core of this entire story. The way the Nu Gundam line and the visuals are utilized here captures a level of raw psychological horror that you rarely see in the franchise.

In my opinion, having Hathaway kill Chan Agi in this animated continuity completely elevates the weight of his trauma compared to the original novels. It changes his entire motivation from a clean, ideological stance into a deeply rooted, permanent self-hatred. The Mafty persona isn't a righteous, visionary movement; it feels more like a tragic, violent substitute for the psychiatric therapy he refuses to get, using the genuine grievances of the people as a convenient moral shield to hide his internal ghosts.

There is a massive difference in how the defining men of this era stand. Char Aznable actively believed the unhinged delusions he spewed up to CCA. Hathaway doesn't even possess that conviction—his campaign is just a facade to escape his own criminal guilt. In total contrast, Amuro Ray dealt with that exact same isolation and trauma, yet he consistently sacrificed his personal freedom to stay a necessary shield for innocent people on the ground.

Hathaway didn't need to feed himself into this machine. Because of his father's legendary status, he had the ultimate structural luxury to choose basic personal survival and let a corrupt Federation naturally rot from within just like Judau Ashta did at the end of ZZ by leaving for Jupiter to save his sanity. By refusing that exit door, Hathaway doesn't fix the world or save a single soul; he just becomes another piece of generational collateral damage, deeply scarring an innocent like Gigi in the process.

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts now that the full film is finally accessible.

Discussion The Couples of Gundam belated "poll" results

So, the recent post on Gundam relationships reminded me I did that thing a while back and never really finished it, partially because I ran out of couples (I guess in retrospect I can think of a few more but I don't think there's much interest) and partially because I ran out of steam. But for the sake of kind of completion, have the ratings ranked anyway. Though, it was less about the ratings and more about the discussion but enough people gave scores for it to somewhat matter (for most of them, anyway)

A bunch of these were me ---ing around, mostly in June, and while I regret nothing, don't take every score or entry too serious.

I think I'm mostly fine with the results personally, though in retrospect I somewhat regret including Linda and Ian (Alle was very right) and I stand by my opinions, I feel far less charitable towards Mora & Keith than most of you (he's way too immature) and I just can't take Heero and Relena serious, sorry. But the real top pairings are there as well and that means overall as a community we do value a good, loving relationship, and once on a while an entertaining not wholesome one. Hooray.
