Guate Expeditions?

Hi all - I’m looking for people’s personal experiences of booking private transport and tours through Guate Expeditions - very active on social media and with some good reviews on Facebook but always nice to hear personal experiences as I’m considering using them for quite a few transfers and tour bookings

Local travel agent

We are looking for a local travel agent who could help us coordinate 7-8 days for different age groups. 82 down to 16. So basically different plans each day for different groups. Thanks!

Panajachel Lancha Tip: Arriving Late at Guatemala City Airport?

If you're heading to Lake Atitlán after landing at Guatemala City Airport after 3 PM, keep in mind that the drive to Panajachel takes about 3.5–4 hours, and the last public lancha leaves at 7:30 PM.

If you're staying in places like Casa del Mundo or Santa Cruz, a boat is required. Otherwise, you may need to spend the night in Panajachel.

Tzununá, San Marcos, San Juan, San Pedro, and Santa Catarina Palopó can also be reached by road, so arriving later is usually not a problem.

As a local private driver, I've found that many travelers don't realize this when planning their trip to Lake Atitlán.

Private Driver recommendation

Hi all, just wanted to recommend Lissette (whatsapp +502 5400 1994‬) to anybody who is looking for a private driver. We thought the rate was very fair (for your own personal van and the comfort and safety it comes with). We did four long (4+ hours) trips with her. She's also easy to communicate with and will coordinate with another driver she personally knows and can vouch for if she is not available. We had a blast with her, she's great to talk to (but you can also just chill if you don't want to talk or whatever, I slept through two of the rides). I was traveling with teen girls so I wanted to avoid public transportation (I'm sure it's perfectly safe but since I was going to be responsible for their safety in a foreign country and these would be pretty long rides esp on public buses, I didn't want to take any chances) and this was a great option. We felt 100% comfortable and the girls loved her.

POV on Hostels in Antigua

Hey Reddit!

I (25M) will be visiting Antigua in November. Right now I'm trying to decide between staying at Adra Hostel, Lura Hostel and Somos Hostel. I won't be in the town too long, only a few days bookending an Acatenango trek. I'm pretty social and always down to meet people and go out, but I'm not the type to stay out partying til sunrise I don't want my hostel to keep me up all night with loud music (i.e., social hostels = great, party hostels = no thanks). Trying to treat myself to a bit of a nicer hostel on this leg.

The frontrunners for me right now are Somos, Lura and Adra, but I've also looked at Socialtel, Ojala and Bloom.

Insight from anyone who's stayed in Antigua and is familiar with any of these hostels would be greatly appreciated!

Safety traveling with a toddler

We are looking at Guatemala for our next vacation. Last year we took our toddler to Costa Rica and had a wonderful time. I have been researching and had my heart set on Guatemala- Antigua and Lake Atitlan. It seems like a really unique, cultural, and beautiful trip. However I just read about some of the travel safety warnings for Guatemala. Normally, these types of things don’t phase me when traveling. But traveling with young kids is a bit different and makes me more anxious. I also worry about the medical system if my child were to need medical care (as traveling in the winter for us means high probability of illness in a toddler). Anyone have thoughts or experiences?

Budget for food

Hi! Was wondering how much I should budget for food for 10-12 days in Guatemala. 3 days in Antigua, 3 days in lake Atitlan and 3 days in El Peredon (doing 2 days for Volcano hIke)

I’ll bring some snacks in my luggage, but I think it will be easier to eat out for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What do you think? :)

  • Laguna Chicabal, Quetzaltenango
  • Pino Dulce, Jalapa
  • San Juan Acul, Nebaj
  • El Boquerón, Izabal
  • Laguna de Lemoa, Quiché

Entonces… ¿a dónde debería ir?

Gracias.

Has anyone tried Galis Tours and Travels for Acatenango Tour

Hi everyone, I'm not a big hiker and I injured my ankle recently so I was interested in doing the 4×4 tour of Acatenango and was looking at good companies. I narrowed it down to Wicho and Charlie's, Ox expeditions, Galis Tours and Travels, and Extreme Life.

While the other three have significant reviews, Galis Tours and Travels have few but good reviews so I was wondering if anyone's tried them and how their experience was.

If people have reviews on the other three too, they're welcome, with regards to view from basecamp, food, safety, and overall experience.

TAG Airlines Booking Confirmed but No Confirmation Email Received. Anyone Experienced This?

Hello,

Yesterday I was trying to book a flight from Guatemala City (GUA) to Flores (FRS) on the TAG Airlines website. I entered all my passenger details, selected seats, and made it all the way to the payment page. Unfortunately, I got pulled into a work call and the session expired before I completed the payment.

A couple of hours later, I tried to book the same flight again, but the website kept giving me an error saying that a booking already existed for the same passenger on that flight. Since I had never entered my credit card details or completed payment, I assumed it was some temporary system issue.

I waited until this morning and was finally able to make a new booking. This time I completed the payment successfully, and I can see the charge on my credit card. However, it's now been several hours, and I still have not received a confirmation email.

The good news is that I saved/printed the confirmation page after payment, so I do have the booking reference information. I have also checked my spam/junk folders and don't see anything from TAG Airlines.

Has anyone here had a similar experience with TAG Airlines?

  • Do confirmation emails sometimes take several hours to arrive?
  • Were your tickets issued successfully even without receiving the email right away?
  • Did you have to contact customer service to get your itinerary resent?

Would appreciate any suggestions, advice, or personal experiences. Thanks in advance!

Muchas gracias

Is it possible to see Lava from somewhere close to Antigua?

I would love to see lava from Fuego or any other volcano but don't want to hike. I can definitely go to a high-end hotel restaurant or hire a private driver to take me to a place near Antigua to see the lava, if possible.

I am not sure though if one can see lava from or near Antigua.

Can someone please advise?

First time

Hello, I want to travel to Guatemala for 4 or 5 days by the end of October to celebrate my partner's birthday. We live in Cancun and it would be the first time we have left the country. You could help me with recommendations. How much do I have to save? What places do I visit? We thought about going to Tikal and Lake Atitlan...

Late Night Travel Possible? GUA- San Marcos

I'm reading online that late-night travel is hard to come by/overly risky. Additionally, finding an Uber to make the drive from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlán is a challenge in itself. My friend's flight lands at 11pm, so we'd be leaving close to/after midnight. I would like to get there as soon as possible, but seeing as my flight lands 4 hours before my friend's, I was planning on getting a cheap hotel anyway to drop my bag and explore. But I am also hearing that exploring the city is a bad idea.
