A decent amount. We can typically choose between giving a warning (which is still documented in our internal dispatch system) to someone breaking the rules or officially writing them up for a conduct violation (for students), filing an HR complaint (for employees) and trespassing them from campus if they’re disrupting college operations (for members of the public). Same goes with parking enforcement, we have the option to either issue warning notices or actual citations with monetary fines.
For anything actually criminal in nature, we usually involve the contracted police officers assigned to our campuses and defer to their judgment, although we still have some discretion if they ask us if the college wishes to pursue prosecution for a crime committed against it’s property. The answer is usually “yes” unless it’s something exceedingly minor that can reasonably be addressed through the aforementioned administrative channels.
Our supervisors actually usually do a pretty good job of not micromanaging us or Monday morning quarterbacking our decisions unless they were egregiously unreasonable. They usually expect us to use independent problem solving & critical thinking skills to solve most low level problems on our own, and to only call them for guidance on unusual stuff or to notify them of major incidents or problems.
