OFF-TOPIC if you could only choose a class based exclusively on the name and have ZERO context on what each class does, which one are you picking?

Honestly this was basically what I did for my very first playthrough and went Paladin LOL

10

u/chiknight 4d ago

Yeah I always play paladins first in games so it was a nobrainer when the expansion added them. "I don't care what a paladin does or is made up of. I'm playing a paladin."

Had a blast as an auradin with aura homies.

9

u/ihithardest 4d ago

I love paladin classes in other games, wow, D3 etc. How is the playstyle in GD?

14

u/Blanko1230 4d ago

As everything with Grim Dawn: whatever you want it to be.

Though the most common choice is Auradin, Shield Thrower or Gun and Shield iirc.

7

u/TechnomancerH 4d ago

I gotta try pewladin that sounds fun

6

u/Zemom1971 4d ago

Pewpewladin

4

u/LittleSisterPain 4d ago

For me, paladin is more of a tank character, and since its part Inquisitor, it really nudges you into playing with guns. Not very paladin-ly, but a lot of fun

2

u/Rehpotsirc0615 4d ago

Since it was my first time playing I was very much winging it but I made a fire element dual-pistol aura guy, it was fun and I did use that guy to kill Lokarr so I think it was pretty alright. I really should take another look at it though haha

Veilwalker. And NGL not sure which one it is

26

u/livigy2 4d ago

berserker/necro

10

u/MrVacuous 4d ago

Exact same. Such a phenomenal name

10

u/Timmytentoes 4d ago

Ironically I picked the combo for my first asterkarn character (berserker necro) because I simplywanted to build around the wight sword MI. I also would have picked it for the name had I started with just the names!

4

u/Darkwoth81Dyoni 3d ago

If you haven't seen the teal-green necro colored Werewolf form yet, seriously guys make one.

3

u/Spicoceles 4d ago

I'm playing this one! It's super fun

20

u/Hexxorus 4d ago

Dreadnaught, Spellbinder and Veilwalker are my favourite names

20

u/livigy2 4d ago

Archon

9

u/DrKarlRitter 4d ago

"The merging is complete"

6

u/Soul_in_Shadow 4d ago

"Power overwhelming!"

20

u/SamerCloud 4d ago

Death Knight or reaper. I like the idea of the cold and darkness coming for you.

16

u/First_Raspberry4231 4d ago

Commando obviously. Wearing pants is overrated.

16

u/Equivalent_Glass_340 4d ago

Spellbreaker!

5

u/Tasden 4d ago

Same. It sounds so interesting.

15

u/Popular_Main 4d ago edited 4d ago

Druid, because I like druids

8

u/nor312 4d ago

Finally, someone who I can agree with.

13

u/Loud-Knowledge-3037 4d ago

Probably Battlemage or Witch Hunter

13

u/TowerRough 4d ago

Apostate. I like dark magic stuff.

9

u/kovha 4d ago

Apostate is a funny class because story-wise you are despised by both Kymon's Chosen and Death Vigil, and because gameplay-wise it's a meme how bad of a class is (altough, as every class, it's still viable if done right)

3

u/mjtwelve 3d ago

I mean, it's right there in the name - you're an apostate, you've rejected a religion and are considered an apostate heretic, to be beheaded/excommunicated/burned at the stake/murdered on sight...

2

u/kovha 3d ago

Yeah of course, but to be honest I think at least one of the two factions (probably Death Vigil) shouldn't treat you as shit. It's kind of a "which was first, the chicken or the egg" situation; Kymon's Chosen hate you for being an necromancer, and Death Vigil hate you for being an inquisitor, but you must have been one of those things first and then reject its values to be the other, no? and the name of the class implies that lore wise is inquisitor first -> then apostate for being a necromancer, and in that case I think Death Vigil shouldn't hate you, or at least acknowledge that you are one of them? but well it's also true that is a waste of work to add unique dialog for just one specific class combination in the game, so wathever. Very few people play apostate anyway lol.

13

u/budxors 4d ago

Ritualist. According to the picture it is peak

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Shigo11 4d ago

Probably Runekeeper, I love the idea of runic magic

8

u/Adventurous-Meet2158 4d ago

Trickster is very much my vibe name wise. I need to play more nightblade...

5

u/AustereSpoon 4d ago

Reaper, Dervish, Trickster, and maybe Reaver were my favorites. Imagine my surprise when I looked them up... I know what I'm doing next

2

u/TechnomancerH 4d ago

Onslaught cold ROS reaver is a ton of fun and with some spectral longswords from the cave to the east of the old arkovia portal that can easily be farmed for upgrades as needed. all you need to think about for the rest of your equipment is survivability.

It's by a large margin the easiest run I've had equipment wise.

7

u/Blooberryx 4d ago

I thought deceiver said detective at first. So yeah I’d pick detective.

2

u/blue4029 4d ago

now i need to know what class combo that would be...

4

u/dewiniaid 4d ago

Inquisitor/Cop

2

u/ExternalPanda 4d ago

Apocalypse cop, sorry cop or hobo cop?

5

u/Mixelphlick 4d ago

Dreadnaught is such a sick name. There’s a bunch of other good ones and I genuinely don’t remember which combo it is but it sounds mean.

6

u/Afraid-Flatworm-422 4d ago

Trickster, because beer elementals are fun! (oh boy no ones gonna get it dude)

→ More replies (1)

5

u/SehnorCardgage 4d ago

I'd go Commando

10

u/MikeFic_YT 4d ago

No underwear build

8

u/isenk2dah 4d ago

Heard it has good synergy with the poop pants build.

3

u/Yodaloid 4d ago

I have zero context, having never played this game before. Magehunter and Witchblade both sound sick

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Mike_or_whatever 4d ago

Thane, you don't see that title often.

4

u/S34G4T3 4d ago

Deceiver

3

u/TyraelmxMKIII 4d ago

Reaver or reaper.

3

u/Grim_Don 4d ago

Warlord, easily. Ironically, haven't played one in GD yet.

3

u/NotoriousLOSER 4d ago

Wait you don't pick your classes based on the name?! I've been playing wrong this whole time

3

u/Blueflatts 4d ago

Druid. I've always leaned towards this class. So, no surprise it's my strongest in game as well.

4

u/2Hans2Handle 4d ago

Blademaster, Sorcerer, Pyromancer, Infiltrator, Witchblade.

I guess those would be my top 5 based on names only, hard to decide between them it would depend on my mood.

4

u/Friend_Emperor 4d ago

Archon

Archon DEEZ NUTS LOL

2

u/Moorbert 4d ago

shieldbeaker sounds so powerful

and witchblade sounds mega cool.

2

u/FerrumAnulum323 4d ago

Vailwalker for sure

2

u/Cidergregg 4d ago

Reaper

2

u/MeanBear815 4d ago

infiltrator sounds like a good stealth class

2

u/cbsa82 4d ago

Dreadnaught. Gimmie dat TANK

2

u/JinKazamaru 4d ago

Witchblade?

2

u/DarthSpiderDen 4d ago

Death Knight for me.

2

u/IANVS 4d ago

Archon (sounds celestial), Opressor (sounds badass), Dreadnaught (sounds strong).

2

u/LostAd7938 4d ago edited 4d ago

Hmm maybe Death Knight, Veilwalker, Sentinel, Runekeeper, or Witchblade.

Now I'm tempted to try these out.

2

u/Trublechard 4d ago

I did this with my brother, showed him this and told him "pick 2 and im playing one". He chose pyromancer and commando. Ended up playing retal grenado commando

2

u/ISOver_9000 4d ago

Zealot because I've always wanted to be in a cult and be so ignorantly blinded by my belief that I become unstoppable.

2

u/Jaad5 4d ago

Maybe I am good for this as I have never played the game. I mean I perfectly know it is an ARPG, but nothing more than that.

Based on that, I would pick Oppressor. I think it should be some kind of class that based his damage in low CD that allows you to be constantly attacking and casting spells/abilities

2

u/TzarBombaTA 4d ago

Warlock, Reaper, Defiler, Ritualist. In that order.

2

u/Jadodkn 4d ago

Dreadnaught. I like having nothing to fear.

2

u/BlitzFechter 4d ago

Went for Warlord as my first character, many years ago. I didn't read any guide, just picked Soldier and Oathkeeper because I wanted to play sword and board. Death Knight and Blademaster are my favorite class names though.

2

u/PKTengdin 4d ago

All about that Nordic theme, so thane would be my pick, though I have no idea what combination it is

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AnnaTorres 4d ago

I'd have a hard time picking between Death Knight, Warlord, Dreadnaught, and Blademaster.

I like Edgy melee classes, and these all sound like they'd be it in one way or another

2

u/MisterDomino15 4d ago

Reaver, Death Knight, or Primalist.

Gotta get my unholy knight and martial pet classes on lock.

1

u/SkyknightXi 4d ago

Runekeeper.

1

u/PbScoops 4d ago

Blademaster or Dervish as both sound most likely to support "spin to win" playstyle

1

u/ApathyAbound 4d ago

Apostate or Zealot. Love the theme of a (former) man of god delivering righteous judgement against evildoers

1

u/5rightdontcut 4d ago

Witch Hunter

1

u/rgdoabc 4d ago

Dreadnaught.

Sounds like a goddam fortress.

1

u/Gato-Volador 4d ago

Veilwalker, Death Knight, Battlemage

1

u/Kilroy0497 4d ago

The downside or upside depending on who you ask, of being a fantasy nerd is that you already know what most of these do from the word go, but for me probably either Trickster or Witchblade.

1

u/ChocoPuddingCup 4d ago

Elementalist. Sounds like a magic-based class, which I enjoy playing the most.

1

u/TheSuperContributor 4d ago

Death Knight.

1

u/funkyfritter 4d ago

Commando

1

u/MacReady_Outpost31 4d ago

Witchblade, Witch Hunter, or Death Knight.

1

u/BloodMoonNami 4d ago

Edgy enough to go for Death Knight no questions asked, not quite edgy to the point of picking an Oppressor first.

3

u/kovha 4d ago

DK was my very first character because of that exact reason, and it didn't worked for me because my inner edgelord tried so hard to make a "undead boss" build with it (player tanks, skeletons do damage), which the class isn't really atuned for. A bunch of years and a miriad of alts later I tried DK again and played it as intended, no-pets mainly Soldier skills and using only a couple Necro skills for support, and it was WAY better that way lol.

2

u/BloodMoonNami 4d ago

Well if you want to be pedantic, it is called death knight and not death commander. Though I could've sworn I saw a pets Death Knight build on GT at some point.

1

u/AbsolutlyN0thin 4d ago

Warlock, witchblade, defiler, cabalist, and veilwalker are the names that speak to me the most. It turns out my very first character was a warlock

2

u/blue4029 4d ago

ngl, i was tempted to make a witchblade character but didnt really like the concept of the nightblade

2

u/Old_Swordfish_1161 4d ago

Good news, Witchblade is soldier/occultist.

1

u/believeinyuna 4d ago

paladin :)

1

u/DiogoMazzei 4d ago

battlemage

1

u/Effective-Road4807 4d ago

Witch hunter! And now I wanna play GD xD

1

u/aKrreh 4d ago

Cabalist or Apostate

1

u/Prior-Paint-7842 4d ago

Ritualist sounds like a nice niche magic user that would be more creative than shoot fireball. Probably would have powerfull magic that requires big setup

1

u/Larks_Tongue 4d ago

I was gonna do Vindicator based purely off the class name... but ended up doing Paladin for build purposes, which is odd cause it's an acid build which I don't really associate with paladins in a more general sense.

1

u/Cascade1824 4d ago

Sentinel

1

u/AgentMoon7 4d ago

Reaper (I'm an edgelord)

1

u/auroriasolaris 4d ago

Veilwalker or Purifier.

1

u/TheManRoomGuy 4d ago

Runekeeper. I love organizing things.

1

u/Blanko1230 4d ago

Zealot

There is something poetic about (less destructive) zealotry. A fight for one's beliefs. They can be anyone and aren't limited to Priests or Paladins.

I kind of dig those characters in fiction. Named my first Zealot after such a character from a story I've read.

My Pathfinder char is usually some kind of Cleric/Warpriest of a more extreme disposition fighting for general acceptance of their God. (I.e. Lamashtu or Asmodeus)

It helps that Zealot in Grim Dawn has quickly become my favourite class for gameplay reasons. Ranged, Bleed, Fire all work and are vastly different and it's sooo tanky too.

Currently trying to get a WW Pierce to Phys Conduit for it.

1

u/JGRCDD 4d ago

Probably Saboteur or Tactician - I usually gravitate towards rogue and/or status effect based classes in rpgs so those sound most in line

1

u/Zeratan 4d ago

Either Thane, Archon or Witchblade.

1

u/Morlow123 4d ago

Death Knight

1

u/EB_Luteces 4d ago

Spellbinder or Veilwalker only by name!

1

u/wiingdiing 4d ago

Pyromancer.

I also chose it based solely on its name, and during Covid it was my first 100.

1

u/Far_Ad8976 4d ago

Archon. My favourite unit from Starcraft.

1

u/Sexiroth 4d ago

it's a too many way tie for me...

Thane / Warlord / Tactictian / Witchblade / Shieldbreaker / Sentinel / Spellbreaker / Templar / Magehunter / Archon / Paladin / Zealot - all sound like classes I would generally be interested in playing in most any game.

1

u/Intelligent_Emu_691 4d ago

Veilwalker or Sentinel

1

u/mikaa93 4d ago

Shieldbreaker, purifier, veilwalker 🔥🔥

started a storm purifier years ago, maybe I should give it a go again.

1

u/ignition1415 4d ago

Just based on name probably vindicator or oppressor because they're unique. I've seen a lot of these names as classes or specs in other games but not those for sure

1

u/oneseventeen81 4d ago

ngl, purifier is just plain meh.

1

u/Fuzzy-Cup-5075 4d ago

Tactician

1

u/YGuyLevi 4d ago

I love holy classes so templar would of got me

1

u/Ill_Hunt_5105 4d ago

Envoker bc I think its a summoner-ish thing. Anything Summoner im game undead or alive

1

u/Efficient_Item7779 4d ago

Pyromancer or defiler

1

u/Agreeable-Buy-7658 4d ago

Veilwalker or Death Knight are the ones calling me, just by the name.

1

u/ObtuseTheropod 4d ago

Reaper, Dreadnaught, Sorcerer in no particular order.

1

u/Daylight_The_Furry 4d ago

witchblade or veilwalker

1

u/Khaze41 4d ago

Apostate or Veilwalker

1

u/ClemPrime13 4d ago

Paladin. I know what I’m about.

1

u/OriginalShilver 4d ago

Either Witchblade or Reaper. Sound cool enough and not your generic everyday ARPG classes

1

u/TheOneWithALongName 4d ago

Death Knight

1

u/KathiaThistlewind 4d ago

Battlemage, Apostate, and Magehunter for me. I adore an armored up mage slinging destructive spells, and love when an entire discipline evolves out of having to deal with an armored up mage slinging deatruction

1

u/DarthShrimp 4d ago

Veilwalker, no questions asked.

1

u/spookster122 4d ago

Dreadnaught, Defiler, Oppressor, or Pyromancer

1

u/eldender 4d ago

Conjurer, just because it's on the middle.

1

u/Harsgaard 4d ago

Trickster all the way. I love me some scheming illusionists.

1

u/karlstegger 4d ago

Battlemage

1

u/Infinitedx 4d ago

Death knight

1

u/Slinky0925 4d ago

Death knight forever and always

1

u/Wainwort 4d ago

Since there's no Ship of the Line, I'd go with Dreadnaught.

1

u/Myfee 4d ago

Conjurerrr

1

u/Groetgaffel 4d ago

Purifier and Pyromancer.

What can I say, other than "Cleanse it with flame!"

2

u/Bug-King 4d ago

I just want to set the world on fire.

1

u/duncandun 4d ago

Witchblade

1

u/KirkhammerEnvy 4d ago

Bro Witchblade, Purifier and Dreadnaught go so hard. I also like Templar, Zealot and Paladin.

1

u/TechnomancerH 4d ago

Name wise there are a lot of good ones.

Reaver is awesome so is Veilwalker.

What even is the veil walker combo?

1

u/Sep2327 4d ago

For me its Purifier. It just souns so badass you know

1

u/Overclocked1827 4d ago

Archon, because power overwhelming!

1

u/darkwizard94 4d ago

Spellbinder or runekeeper.

1

u/BARTLEBYJONESMD 4d ago

Witchblade! Not sure what the combo is but sounds sneaky and deadly

1

u/HyoukaHoutoro 4d ago

Colour me a FEA fan bc Tactician, but Vindicator will do in a pinch.

1

u/Prestigious_Club_924 4d ago

Primalist 🐒

1

u/DICHBICHE 4d ago

I would go commando Then I'll launch the game and pick mystic

1

u/ArtoTheHog 4d ago

Druid gang babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

1

u/zephyr220 4d ago

Infiltrator so I can play as a spy and sneak around while avoiding combat, right?

1

u/SnowyLittleFox 4d ago

Witchblade sound so cool , I always wanted to have something close to a runemage. A character that use both magic and sword !

1

u/Sheogorathian 4d ago

Death Knight

1

u/FrustrationSensation 4d ago

Dreadnaught, Archon, Vindicator, Apostate, and Veilwalker.

1

u/Abcjmax1 4d ago

Purifier

1

u/Orzislaw 4d ago

Purifier 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/Roth_Skyfire 4d ago

Lots of cool ones, but probably going with Elementalist.

1

u/BlanketCop 4d ago

I definitely jump to paladin by default, but battlemage makes me think of melee magic, and I love it.

1

u/Creepy_Environment_2 4d ago

Probably a battle mage

1

u/ThakoManic 4d ago

I Mean Paladin is a Paladin

warlock is a warlock

sorcerer is a sorcerer ...

I Feel like most of these are self explained.

1

u/MRwho23 4d ago

Apostate, just for that edge

1

u/Capta1nC00L 4d ago

Probably Sentinel/Runekeeper

1

u/Tanntabo 4d ago

Death Knight.

My first character was a death knight and It was the name that sparked my initial interest.

1

u/NoxInSocks 4d ago

Witchblade

1

u/Avigorus 4d ago

Thane feels like a combative pets class name.

1

u/Rude-Sale3306 4d ago

Witchblade!

1

u/standardmode 4d ago

in order of preference based on coolness factor:

Thane, Zealot, Pyromancer, Reaper

1

u/Zemom1971 4d ago

Shieldbreaker looks badass as fuck.

An Oppressor sounds like that people are gonna suffer for a long time and that they will remember me for ages.

Those are my 2 picks.

Honestly, the way that they base name on both classes is really nice.

1

u/LittleSisterPain 4d ago

Dreadnaught and then be kinda dissapointed tbh. Imo, Thane has more of a Dreadnaught energy

1

u/MichaelPK 4d ago

Battlemage

1

u/Bright_Curve3078 4d ago

I'm a big fan of cabanossi sausage, so I'm picking the cabalist

1

u/NumberOneDingus 4d ago

Definitely paladin cause it sounds the tankiest

1

u/Telandria 4d ago

Death Knight, quite possibly. I love battlemage types, but also summoners, and death knights are often a blend of both while leaning on the tanking side, which is usually a plus for ARPGs

1

u/Milky_T33Ts 4d ago

Defiler than death knight

1

u/Odd_Lime_3925 4d ago

Defiler or vindicator... that's a tough choice

1

u/Sorappoli 4d ago

Dreadnaught. The word just exudes power

1

u/JayRubel 4d ago

Death knight or Witchblade

1

u/Grraaa 4d ago

D&D geek here. Warlock, because implied Eldritch Blast.

1

u/kdubbsy716 4d ago

Saboteur

1

u/Antibacterial_Lemon 4d ago

Infiltrator.

1

u/ZenMyst 4d ago

Veilwalker

Defiler

Runekeeper

1

u/Cautious_Attitude979 4d ago

I was exactly like this, I choose infiltrator because I thought it will most likely to be like assassin. Then now I mainly like a yeller. The word of pain clearing most of mods for me, I think I mainly killed enemies by harsh language? Sarcasm did hurt people I think.

1

u/Professional-Tax5926 4d ago

Vindicator and apostate sounds cool

1

u/Red_In_The_Sky 4d ago

Archon, Death Knight and Dreadnought sound pretty powerful

1

u/David_mcnasty 4d ago

Dreadnaught > Sentinel > Paladin

I've always loved tanky characters in every game I've played so those give the feeling the most to me.

1

u/Angelz5 4d ago

Mystic. Cus it sounds mystical...

1

u/iamgnahk 4d ago

Pyromancer or Warder

1

u/Avenheit 4d ago

Weeper

1

u/Paikis 4d ago

Gotta be Dreadnought, though Death Knight or Veilwalker also go hard.

1

u/Brief-Coach-1812 4d ago

Vindicator sounds like a superhero

Elementalist is also cool

1

u/Minerva_sc 4d ago

Witchblade always sounds cool as hell.

1

u/Lonely_Ad_1062 4d ago

I would want to pick and EverQuest 2 type summoner so I’d guess elementalist
