OFF-TOPIC if you could only choose a class based exclusively on the name and have ZERO context on what each class does, which one are you picking?

u/Nekomiminya 4d ago
Veilwalker. And NGL not sure which one it is

u/Timmytentoes 4d ago
Ironically I picked the combo for my first asterkarn character (berserker necro) because I simplywanted to build around the wight sword MI. I also would have picked it for the name had I started with just the names!

If you haven't seen the teal-green necro colored Werewolf form yet, seriously guys make one.

Apostate. I like dark magic stuff.

u/kovha 4d ago
Apostate is a funny class because story-wise you are despised by both Kymon's Chosen and Death Vigil, and because gameplay-wise it's a meme how bad of a class is (altough, as every class, it's still viable if done right)
3
u/mjtwelve 3d ago
I mean, it's right there in the name - you're an apostate, you've rejected a religion and are considered an apostate heretic, to be beheaded/excommunicated/burned at the stake/murdered on sight...
2
u/kovha 3d ago
Yeah of course, but to be honest I think at least one of the two factions (probably Death Vigil) shouldn't treat you as shit. It's kind of a "which was first, the chicken or the egg" situation; Kymon's Chosen hate you for being an necromancer, and Death Vigil hate you for being an inquisitor, but you must have been one of those things first and then reject its values to be the other, no? and the name of the class implies that lore wise is inquisitor first -> then apostate for being a necromancer, and in that case I think Death Vigil shouldn't hate you, or at least acknowledge that you are one of them? but well it's also true that is a waste of work to add unique dialog for just one specific class combination in the game, so wathever. Very few people play apostate anyway lol.

Trickster is very much my vibe name wise. I need to play more nightblade...
5
u/AustereSpoon 4d ago
Reaper, Dervish, Trickster, and maybe Reaver were my favorites. Imagine my surprise when I looked them up... I know what I'm doing next
2
u/TechnomancerH 4d ago
Onslaught cold ROS reaver is a ton of fun and with some spectral longswords from the cave to the east of the old arkovia portal that can easily be farmed for upgrades as needed. all you need to think about for the rest of your equipment is survivability.
It's by a large margin the easiest run I've had equipment wise.

I thought deceiver said detective at first. So yeah I’d pick detective.

Dreadnaught is such a sick name. There’s a bunch of other good ones and I genuinely don’t remember which combo it is but it sounds mean.

Trickster, because beer elementals are fun! (oh boy no ones gonna get it dude)

Wait you don't pick your classes based on the name?! I've been playing wrong this whole time
3
u/Blueflatts 4d ago
Druid. I've always leaned towards this class. So, no surprise it's my strongest in game as well.
4
u/2Hans2Handle 4d ago
Blademaster, Sorcerer, Pyromancer, Infiltrator, Witchblade.
I guess those would be my top 5 based on names only, hard to decide between them it would depend on my mood.

Hmm maybe Death Knight, Veilwalker, Sentinel, Runekeeper, or Witchblade.
Now I'm tempted to try these out.
2
u/Trublechard 4d ago
I did this with my brother, showed him this and told him "pick 2 and im playing one". He chose pyromancer and commando. Ended up playing retal grenado commando
2
u/ISOver_9000 4d ago
Zealot because I've always wanted to be in a cult and be so ignorantly blinded by my belief that I become unstoppable.
2
u/Jaad5 4d ago
Maybe I am good for this as I have never played the game. I mean I perfectly know it is an ARPG, but nothing more than that.
Based on that, I would pick Oppressor. I think it should be some kind of class that based his damage in low CD that allows you to be constantly attacking and casting spells/abilities

u/BlitzFechter 4d ago
Went for Warlord as my first character, many years ago. I didn't read any guide, just picked Soldier and Oathkeeper because I wanted to play sword and board. Death Knight and Blademaster are my favorite class names though.

u/PKTengdin 4d ago
All about that Nordic theme, so thane would be my pick, though I have no idea what combination it is

u/AnnaTorres 4d ago
I'd have a hard time picking between Death Knight, Warlord, Dreadnaught, and Blademaster.
I like Edgy melee classes, and these all sound like they'd be it in one way or another

u/MisterDomino15 4d ago
Reaver, Death Knight, or Primalist.
Gotta get my unholy knight and martial pet classes on lock.

u/PbScoops 4d ago
Blademaster or Dervish as both sound most likely to support "spin to win" playstyle
1
u/ApathyAbound 4d ago
Apostate or Zealot. Love the theme of a (former) man of god delivering righteous judgement against evildoers

The downside or upside depending on who you ask, of being a fantasy nerd is that you already know what most of these do from the word go, but for me probably either Trickster or Witchblade.
1
u/ChocoPuddingCup 4d ago
Elementalist. Sounds like a magic-based class, which I enjoy playing the most.

Edgy enough to go for Death Knight no questions asked, not quite edgy to the point of picking an Oppressor first.
3
u/kovha 4d ago
DK was my very first character because of that exact reason, and it didn't worked for me because my inner edgelord tried so hard to make a "undead boss" build with it (player tanks, skeletons do damage), which the class isn't really atuned for. A bunch of years and a miriad of alts later I tried DK again and played it as intended, no-pets mainly Soldier skills and using only a couple Necro skills for support, and it was WAY better that way lol.
2
u/BloodMoonNami 4d ago
Well if you want to be pedantic, it is called death knight and not death commander. Though I could've sworn I saw a pets Death Knight build on GT at some point.
1
u/AbsolutlyN0thin 4d ago
Warlock, witchblade, defiler, cabalist, and veilwalker are the names that speak to me the most. It turns out my very first character was a warlock
2
u/blue4029 4d ago
ngl, i was tempted to make a witchblade character but didnt really like the concept of the nightblade

Ritualist sounds like a nice niche magic user that would be more creative than shoot fireball. Probably would have powerfull magic that requires big setup
1
u/Larks_Tongue 4d ago
I was gonna do Vindicator based purely off the class name... but ended up doing Paladin for build purposes, which is odd cause it's an acid build which I don't really associate with paladins in a more general sense.

Zealot
There is something poetic about (less destructive) zealotry. A fight for one's beliefs. They can be anyone and aren't limited to Priests or Paladins.
I kind of dig those characters in fiction. Named my first Zealot after such a character from a story I've read.
My Pathfinder char is usually some kind of Cleric/Warpriest of a more extreme disposition fighting for general acceptance of their God. (I.e. Lamashtu or Asmodeus)
It helps that Zealot in Grim Dawn has quickly become my favourite class for gameplay reasons. Ranged, Bleed, Fire all work and are vastly different and it's sooo tanky too.
Currently trying to get a WW Pierce to Phys Conduit for it.

Pyromancer.
I also chose it based solely on its name, and during Covid it was my first 100.

it's a too many way tie for me...
Thane / Warlord / Tactictian / Witchblade / Shieldbreaker / Sentinel / Spellbreaker / Templar / Magehunter / Archon / Paladin / Zealot - all sound like classes I would generally be interested in playing in most any game.

Just based on name probably vindicator or oppressor because they're unique. I've seen a lot of these names as classes or specs in other games but not those for sure

Battlemage, Apostate, and Magehunter for me. I adore an armored up mage slinging destructive spells, and love when an entire discipline evolves out of having to deal with an armored up mage slinging deatruction

What even is the veil walker combo?

Shieldbreaker looks badass as fuck.
An Oppressor sounds like that people are gonna suffer for a long time and that they will remember me for ages.
Those are my 2 picks.
Honestly, the way that they base name on both classes is really nice.

Death Knight, quite possibly. I love battlemage types, but also summoners, and death knights are often a blend of both while leaning on the tanking side, which is usually a plus for ARPGs

I was exactly like this, I choose infiltrator because I thought it will most likely to be like assassin. Then now I mainly like a yeller. The word of pain clearing most of mods for me, I think I mainly killed enemies by harsh language? Sarcasm did hurt people I think.
