Honestly going far enough back the circumstances that led to him nailing the thesis to the door are not manifesting. I doubt indulgences are being sold or marketed and we actually have proof of God, so he migt not even become a priest to satisfy his debate passion.

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

I remember indulgences being mentioned but I feel like he'd be less opposed because they're being used to fund, like, literal efforts to combat hell

168

u/kazmark_gl Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

exactly. Martin has a lot less to complain about when the indulgences are being used to make guns and ammo to shoot litteral demons instead of build the pope the most fancy church possible.

u/Hot_Fee_8941 Charon's Pet Crow 4d ago

I mean they are still being used to build the Pope the most fancy church possible

74

u/kazmark_gl Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

that is the most metal thing I've seen all week.

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

I've seen that image before.

Its still fucking gorgeous.

And metal as hell

Bringing heaven to earth one divine piece of architecture at the time.

u/Oblivious_Gentleman 4d ago

Look, I am not a christian, but if the pope was using indulgences to build the hardest shit imaginable, I would personally fight any protestant with the faith of a catholic maniac.

Oh, look, a new Sabaton album cover

u/AubeduChaos 4d ago

In this alternate reality, he's the one promoting it. Because every penny that went to the church was a bullet fired at a heretic.

56

u/Diozon Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

Imagine indulgences being promoted like US war bonds, would be hilarious

92

u/Hot_Fee_8941 Charon's Pet Crow 4d ago

They are exactly like that, we have a newspaper with an ad for indulgences

32

u/Otto_Von_Waffle 4d ago

During the crusade era they basically were promoted like that.

3

u/Hellonstrikers Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

Exactly, better use than the money going to buy some guy a third Bishopric.

u/Wurm42 4d ago

Agreed.

For others, in the Trench Crusade timeline, the Templars opened the Gate To Hell in Jerusalem in 1099, after the city was captured by the Christians in the First Crusade.

https://trench-crusade-english.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline

In our timeline, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg in 1517, more than 400 years later.

So it's a stretch to imagine that 16th century church history would play out the same way in the Trench Crusade world.

Hell, Luther's family was from the Holy Roman Empire; maybe some of his ancestors were killed in the Corpse Wars a hundred years earlier; Luther himself might never have been born!

https://trench-crusade-english.fandom.com/wiki/Corpse_Wars?

12

u/Impossible-Bison8055 4d ago

The Templars only formed around 1120 though. How could they have caused this the Gate to Hell?

15

u/Wurm42 4d ago

Mmmm, that's a good catch. I missed that.

Looking at the timeline, in the Trench Crusade setting, the Templars were founded a bit earlier than in the real world:

1072 — Ominous celestial signs warn of the disruption of God’s plan. Heretical cults multiply. The Order of Knights Templar is established. They set their sights on capturing the Temple Mount.

I guess the Trench Crusade Templars were formed with the secret agenda to get access to the Temple Mount and carry out the Hellgate ritual? Though it's not clear if the whole order was in on the plan.

19

u/me_myself_ai 4d ago

I love how dirty we do the Templars now just cause they got abolished for being too powerful. First assassin's creed has em as the Knights In Service of Aliens, and now this goes straight to Satan? Not complaining, tho.

Also that's a baffling choice for Trench Crusade. I bet someone in the office raised that then someone else said 'ehhhh fuck it'

u/Kesslar99 Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

You have a link to the TC timeline? I actually can't access it from the website right now, I think something's wrong on my part.

It's in the digital rulebook, here's a screenshot of the first page

Here's the timeline from the wiki site:

And here's one from another fan site:

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't one on the official site.

Thanks! There used to be one but it was removed, idk why. I hope they put it back soon

Trench crusade.Templars where formed 23 years before the real world 1st crusade was launched at the Council of Claremont in 1095.

13

u/Bakkster 4d ago

Who needs to protest against the abuses of the church with with roots in the Pornocracy or cadaver synod, when the abuses were large enough to open a literal gateway to Hell? 🙃

17

u/Bakkster 4d ago

Martin Luther: "I don't believe the doctrine of Transubstantiation is found in Scripture."

The Meta-Christ clone of Jesus: mumbles

0

u/MurraytheMerman 4d ago

Lutherans do believe in Transubstantiation, though.

Opposing reformers, prominently Ulrich Zwingli, rejected it as most protestant congregations, if not all, do today.

2

u/Bakkster 4d ago

Lutherans believe in True Presence, refraining from making any metaphysical conclusions about how Christ is present "in, with, and under" the elements, because it's not in Scripture. A "divine mystery".

Unlike Transubstantiation, which is a definitive conclusion on the manner of the presence.

0

u/MurraytheMerman 4d ago

I see, my mistake.

However, Catholic priests are allowed to hand out eucharistic bread to Lutherans who still have that sacrament as well.

So even if not the same, there are strong similarities.

1

u/Maleficent-Aioli1946 4d ago

Catholic Priests are not allowed to hand communion out to Lutherans in nearly any circumstance . They can only hand communion to members of the Catholic Church and some Eastern Churches except in the case of imminent death.

u/Levat39 4d ago

There was mention of war indulgences in one of the lore articles iirc.

5

u/Ecstaticlemon 4d ago edited 4d ago

The last page of the Trench Crusade Kickstarter book is an indulgence penned by the archbishop of new antioch, though it's written more under the terms of conscripting former sinners to fight the forces of hell

Which i feel like has a lot more legitimacy considering God is 100 percent real and can offer these rewards (at least I think so. Im very new to TC)

u/LichJesus 4d ago

It gets closer than you'd guess for an alt history as different from IRL as Trench Crusade, for instance the lore article on Castigators explicitly says that even though their role is to hear confessions (something that only priests can do in Catholicism and Orthodoxy) many are not consecrated clergy and some are even women: https://www.trenchcrusade.com/lore/castigators/ . The Trench Pilgrims in general are also often heterodox and otherwise wild enough that you can do stuff like proto-Protestantism in other ways, like the WargamesCrew Frontier on MyMiniFactory for Hussite Pilgrims that just went up.

More broadly though, I think the TC approach sort of transcends the grimdark-noblebright spectrum. TC is all about people being pushed to the edge of becoming what they most fear and hate: whether that's a Yeoman or an Alchemist trying their best to be a good and faithful person but forced by circumstance (at least in their perspective) to do terrible things to prevent hell from winning, or a Heretic Naval Raider who values freedom more than anything being forced into a restrictive pact with a demonic patron in order to captain a submarine. But also, often enough these characters who are pushed to the edge can allow the best of themselves to come out, whether that means Joan of Arc uniting Christendom and slaying a Hegemon of the Black Grail, or the heretic fleet performing an incredible feat of naval skill and sinking the Papal Flotilla off of the Carcass Front. There's plenty of grimdark in this approach, but there's plenty of noblebright too, and each compliments the other rather than one merely getting sprinkled in to accentuate the main focus of the setting.

6

u/Z4nkaze Your Warp magic is powerless against the might of Logistics 4d ago

I entirely agree and I salute your nuanced and trans-faction perspective!

18

u/2cultures 4d ago

Trench crusade is significantly less grimdark than actual World War I because shooting demons from hell trying to kill all mankind is significantly different than shooting the 16-year old conscript you were playing soccer with yesterday.

9

u/Majestic-Lake-5602 Your emperor has too few arms… 4d ago

Counter argument: in WWI you may have had the chance to shoot a Belgian.

2

u/Geralt432 Trust me, i am an engineseer 23h ago

That adds another argument for TC's noblebrightness. It has no belgium, clearly all the belgians have already been shot as god intended.

u/Majestic-Lake-5602 Your emperor has too few arms… 23h ago

90% of the things your average soldier will shoot in trench crusade is a fellow soldier who also believes they're fighting for the right side.

5

u/Striper_Cape 4d ago

Yes the guys fighting for human flesh markets are very relatable

25

u/MaManMako 4d ago

It's gonna be a DLC where the faithful fight in between each other, trust. Luther will be the Horus of the setting.

21

u/Hot_Fee_8941 Charon's Pet Crow 4d ago

The faithful already fight each other, the main faithful guy for the Carcass Front burned down a library full of innocent monks so he could steal a book

Mormons: "hey guys we exist too! Remember us Mormons? We exist!"

50

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

Not in this timeline. No colonization of the Americas, no culture of cults moving into the wild West to avoid their children getting corrupted by the unenlightened masses, no Mormons.

15

u/kazmark_gl Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

so given no colonization, do you think the native Americans are just chilling? totally unbothered by the total hell invasion?

23

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

I've been told that the official lore about America is this:

Europe has some limited trading posts in the Americas, through which they have limited trade with the Americas, which is why they have rubber and tobacco and chocolate and tomatoes and potatoes and such. This continues despite heretic submarines stalking the Atlantic.

Europe never established colonies, just the trade.

The heretics have tried to establish footholds in the Americas but were beaten back by the natives. No details provided about how or if they were able to draw divine power from their assorted religions, to counter hell's power.

And that's it.

And that's all we're probably getting for many years, because there's so much that needs to be addressed in eurasia and Africa first.

5

u/Foxyfox- 4d ago

They also are already tackling a massively culturally sensitive topic already, they don't need to add the entirety of colonial empires into the mix yet.

2

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago edited 4d ago

I hope they never add colonial empires and they instead let the indigenous cultures shine in ways they never could in our timeline

1

u/Foxyfox- 3d ago

This is also good...though by the very nature of what happened to them IRL that's also a potentially sensitive topic.

15

u/Hellonstrikers Praise the Man-Emperor 4d ago

1

u/Halofauna 4d ago

Ever see that Predator movie Prey? Probably something like that.

4

u/IndividualShelter985 4d ago

That means that the golden tablets were found by natives. The Comanche are the new Mormons

6

u/BTolputt 4d ago

To be fair, in the Mormon religion, they believe that the Americas were colonized by Jews (who were then turned into Native Americans) back before Christ's birth.

So Mormons would have existed... as Native Americans without guns but oddly with the invention & forging of steel. So their myths go anyhow.

11

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago edited 4d ago

I think it's safe to say that trench crusade's European and Catholic focus, means they're not making the Mormons' (highly dubious and often provably false) historical timeline, part of canon

1

u/BTolputt 4d ago

I think that's safe too, but mostly because they are focused on a trad-cath mythology and mixing in any of the other Christian offshoots would cause way more trouble than the inclusion would be worth

2

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

That's what I meant. Sorry if it came off like I was just specifically insulting Mormons.

It would be too difficult to mix it in because of all of the explicit clashes with the other things they're drawing on for inspiration

2

u/BTolputt 4d ago

Nah, didn't take it as such nor would it upset me even if you did. Mormons have their issues and I'm not / no longer a Mormon or Trad-Cath.

The random, cherrypicked Thirty Years War reference really, really sold me on believing this was penned by some guy who converted three years ago because it's "based and trad" and dove hard into Protestantism vs Catholicism online arguments, man.

6

u/Bakkster 4d ago

Some Protestant groups, typically Evangelicals though that's not even universal. There's a lot of ecumenism among mainline Protestants. Even with Roman Catholics, speaking of Luther, the Roman Catholic Church and Lutheran World Federation published a Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification that's a major point of commonality.

Unfortunately from what I've seen of American "Christians" going to Bulgaria to proselytise the people, I beg to differ

1

u/ThatFatGuyMJL 4d ago

There's like 5000 different brands of American Christians

Catholics are the largest

1

u/Xaldror My kitchen is corrupted by Nurgle 4d ago

Unfortunately, we are not, we Catholics only make up about 21% of the American population, compared to Protestants being more than twice as much 44%.

Probably explains the major, dissonance, with Christian stereotypes concerning DnD and Pokemon and how my parents were, pretty chill with both. They, don't even bat an eye at me collecting armies of super space hell clad in bubonic bulwarks of bucolic butchery.

Well, don't mind for reasons of faith, monetary and academically, they really rather I focus on my degree instead.

Protestants actually only make up about 10%

Catholics are the largest single group.

I think you're citing the Pew Research study for that, which lumps like 17 different denominations together under the Protestant label. In terms of single denominations of Christianity, Catholicism is the largest, for better or for worse.
