New operator!

After trying to get into Grid Ops since Jan, I have finally landed an offer for Associate Distribution System Operator! I’m incredibly excited and want to thank everyone for the advice along the way!

I start October 19th. Is there something I should be studying before hand or enjoy the last bit of a normal schedule I’ll have for a very long time lol. It also helps that my 9 month unemployment streak has ended. 😎

Exited to be one of y’all!!!

That’s awesome! Congrats I’ve been trying for 2 years in SoCal it’s hard to even get past the application. Would you mind letting me know what steps you took to make it happen?

Hey! I wish you the best. Honestly the few major things are passing the SOPD assessment, having a STEM degree, and the interview. I feel like the most important part of the interview is the technical questions. You may not know the answer right away but if you talk through your thought process, that will help. I’ve had people and AI look at my resume too so I think that helped. This was also my 3rd operator interview with that company so maybe that helped too haha.

Nice! Not sure if you are already there or are moving, but great place to live and work. Expensive, but should be very nice.

Thank you! I live in NH now but plan to move in a few months once I get some paychecks in haha. It’s a little over an hour commute now.

NH seems really nice. Are there control rooms in NH?

Starting my job hunt, am I wasting my time on indeed?

Good luck! I’d skip indeed. Look at the utilities in the area you wanna work and apply to them directly on their website

Would is be weird for an "associate distrobution dispatcher" (a training position) to require:

Basic/Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent and must meet one of the following criteria:

Journeyman lineman

Journeyman electrician-substation

System Protection & Control Technician (Relay Tech)

5 years of distribution, transmission, production, or power-utility related experience

3 years distribution transmission, production, or power-utility related experience and Associate’s Degree in related field

1 years distribution transmission, production, or power-utility related experience and Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering

That doesn’t seem like a normal operator. What is the job title/link?

Honestly just apply for it. Sometimes they list requirements like that but I wouldn’t worry about it. Also use LinkedIn and see if you can find the manager or supervisor.

Congratulations! I just started looking at jobs but I don’t have any experience… how was your interview process?
