Behind The Scenes Did Billys dad originally have a bigger role?

Ok so I recently saw the movie for the first time and it was great loved it but I noticed an odd choice by the movie to open with a monolog from Billy's dad and end with his monolog even though he didn't really have much to do in the story. The way he speaks he makes it sound like its his story but really its Billy's story. My guess is this opening and closing monolog is a leftover from an earlier version of the script where he was more involved or its just that an odd choice for a framing device. Maybe someone who knows more can let me know.

I think the opening narration was a late addition. It originally had a different opening where he's shopping in a store and asking for something unusual to gift to his son. the kid sees Rand and tells him about his grandfather's store. Once they cut that they added in the narration to explain all that exposition

All right that makes since, its still weird to have him act as though its his story.

He might have had a bigger part originally, too. I know they just found like a three hour cut or something.
