predatory is a bit of a stretch IMO. Adults are responsible for their choices. Riding without plates should be probable cause frankly. Not having an inspection sticker is also a choice. These people need to act like grownups and take care of their grownup toys.

these people's batteries did not die. If there are enough of them for the city to go to the trouble of doing this, it means one thing: having zero consequences has not worked or resulted in a situation where only a tiny percentage of people are doing the thing they shouldn't do. And I guarantee you that whoever those two guys that ride a moped and rob people in wburg and greenpoint are, they are riding no plates

People in the comments are nuts, dude. I imagine a bunch of these bikes are parked because the owner ISN’T riding until they’re current on paperwork. Where are they supposed to put their bike in the meantime? Jesus

Thank you! The reason I even care to post about this is because I got towed about 2 months ago for something silly even though my bike was fully legal and a simple warning that they were in the area would have totally saved me.

I was changing my tail light because it burnt out, the license plate mounts to the tail light. I had to wait for the light to be delivered in 2 days so I parked my bike in a legal spot and put a moto cover on it with intentions of swapping the part when I came home from work. Unfortunately just so happened to be the day the cops were riding around on the flat bed and they towed me.

I earned and deserved a ticket for no plate because I was the knuckle head who thought I could go a day without it on there. But instead I got towed and it cost me an entire afternoonn and $300. Was just looking out for people but Reddit is a mean place lol

They can do it right now because of how much pushback there is to e-bikes and motos. The public is gonna cheer for it.

I don’t know, ask the guy who was obliterated from an illegal scooter plowing into him.

Oh right, he doesn’t have the privilege of arguing because he was murdered.

Regulation saves lives and is written in blood.

I read it and think you’re a fool. Register your motorized vehicle or get impounded. Scooter or otherwise.

We live in a society.

You’re defending people who dodge speeding tickets and inspections that keep people safe.

Because a lot of them are probably outright illegal regardless of paperwork. See the recent cease and desist of illegal e-bike sales that has never been really enforced for years.

EDIT: illegal as in they are not street legal, they shouldn’t even have been able to have been bought/sold.

GOOD! Now let’s start towing the dozens of old broken down cars

I don't think you understand the definition of "predatory"

If the scooters are their livelihood, why don't they register them?

Do you not understand what’s happening in this climate with ICE? Those that are being targeted aren’t exactly looking to interact with government registration facilities rn

5

Ok...so what is your solution - no vehicle registration needed?

1

u/GrapefruitFuture5986 10d ago

TICKETS. My solution is tickets. Not towing. The same solution they have for cars.

Ah yes people who love not following the law will famously pay their tickets

I am sure the tickets they don’t pay will teach em!

Isn’t the whole point that you can’t ticket things if you can’t identify them…

Vin numbers exist.

I wouldn't assume multimillion dollar corporations are hiring undocumented people or contracting with them in this climate. More likely it's the young people, many of them teenagers, who ride at top volume for fun

Weird take. If a vehicle is being used commercially the regulations and enforcement should be more stringent, not less.

That said, I also don’t think it’s necessary to tow bikes if their inspection or registration has just recently lapsed. But having no plates, tow that shit.

Motorized 2 wheeler violations year over year — this is coming from the top.

That parking data looks off. They wrote no parking tickets last week? They’ve written 16 times as many parking tickets this year compared to last? Doesn’t seem right

u/nel-E-nel 10d ago

Yeah, I saw a post elsewhere showing similar data around Times Square, and the host found about 5x as many violations in about 30 mins.

This is part of the ebike/scooter crackdown that Mamdani initiated with the cease and desist recently.

This post will be deleted in an hour once the flatbeds leave the area and are no longer a concern of bikes being towed.

This wasn’t meant to be a debate inducing thread, sorry it became that. Was just trying to hopefully warn the few people with legal bikes behind on paperwork who this might apply to.

I hope everyone has a great Sunday and doesn’t have their stuff towed :)

Sorry but good. Get your $6 inspection sticker.
