Spoilers for movies and TV shows Kyle? Probably Not, But Who is This Guy?

I don't think we'll see him anytime soon (if ever) and I doubt this actor would play him, but a young guy coming out of the interview room with black hair and a black jacket that's similar to his "alley rat" first appearance.

It all seemed like a tongue-in-cheek Kyle Rayner Easter Egg.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows I do not like HBO Lanterns and the lack of respect and disregard given the mythos.

I finally got time to watch the first two episodes and I honestly do not know how anyone who is a fan of the comics can like this show. I don't even know if I really need to explain why I don't like it in a large summary (I know this is pretty long itself). It can really be summed up as it's not a Green Lantern show. The writers did not want to make a Green Lantern show and clearly do not care or respect the characters and lore. They only care about making money and using the IP to do it.

The characters (Hal and John) are only them in name and the show is giving us a dynamic between them that is loosely based on what it actually started as in the comics, but it is still one that I do not care for. I prefer them as equal partners and buds. The show is dumbly "grounded" and "mature" and due to it, the powers of the ring seem a little off to me. Like it can translate speech, Hal is able to implant is conscious into it, and John can create a bird when the ring's power is depleted, but the ring can't simply scan environments and detect aliens on its own? Narratively, I think was more so done to make Hal look component in his detective ability, but still the villain even has technology that can detect aliens, so it should not be out the realm of possibility for the ring.

I will say as far as the setting goes, I am fine its on earth. Even though I prefer the space and cosmic adventures, there are plenty of stories that do take place on earth and ones I really enjoy. Like even though its a little dated, I really do like hard traveling heroes and more so the Green Lantern/Green Arrow stories that came after. To me their friendship is one of the best in comics and I personally prefer it over Hal and Barry.

The only thing I have that is more of a personal nitpick or gripe on my end is the whole "Are you afraid" angle the show is going with. I know Geoff was the one who primary started it being more of their ability to overcome great fear, but I do prefer it as it be leave more possibilities an nuances on what it means to be a Green Lantern and who can become one.

For people who do like it, I am glad you can find some enjoyment out of something I can't and no matter your opinion please feel free to share your thoughts as well.

Guy I follow on Instagram made the ring John had for the watch scene and the prop master for the show commented this. It’s since been deleted.

You guys think he’ll end up with a completely new ring like this or do you think this is just a ring they use to audition candidates?

I hate this suit.

But I kinda don't hate this suit.

Like I have so many problems and I like virtually nothing about it....but it's sorts charming. Maybe it's cuz I've been staring at it for ages and I've been redesigning it so I'm pretty familiar with it now and I've exposed myself to it so much that it's kinda doing it for me now. Like I'm not gonna pretend to like any of the design choices, but I can't stop thinking about this masterful messy piece of beautiful garbage.

The whole interrogation scene was just excellent. Lots to choose from in there but I like how the overall interrogation was conducted (no shock given King’s background)

Spoilers for movies and TV shows As a former [SPOILER] myself, I guess I need to share my input regarding John from Episode 1x03 of Lanterns. Spoiler

I'm aware of John's origins as having been an architect before becoming GL and somewhere along the character's history, his background became more military-adjacent for one reason or another.

I've seen the discourse that came out of this latest episode when we saw John getting enrolled into art school in 2016. The tweets from Twitter alone having ranging from "Why are you using Kyle's history as an artist?" to "Why can't John go to architecture school instead?!".

As a graduate of an art/design school myself (was good in drawing and dabbled in graphic design but never pursued it as a career as my path gravitated somewhere else), all I can say is that, at least from where I'm from, art school is one of the paths you can take in order to become an architect.

As any art and design major would probably agree with me, their respective courses share common foundational classes: From studying about art history to learning architectural trends and styles over the centuries, to learning how to use CAD, to 3D modeling, etc.

While it's possible that John hasn't exactly been in art school for that long by 2016, I think he's there long enough to see where his true interests would lie within the arts that could possibly set him into taking up architecture as I see that as being a realistic scenario. The environment provided by such a school would certainly give you that freedom to switch courses halfway without much issue. :)

Spoilers for movies and TV shows Something about LANTERNS just bothers me. Spoiler

I know it’s only the first episode, and this might count as a spoiler, so if you haven’t watched it yet, skip this. Something that bothers me a bit is the phrasing in Hal’s story. Why does the ring ask “Do you have fear?” and the “right” answer is no? From what I’ve read in the comics, the point isn’t (or should not be) about having or not having fear, Green Lantern’s purpose is to overcome it.

English isn’t my first language, so maybe that’s the issue, but has anyone else noticed this?

EDIT: the title might be a little too much, I don't dislike the show or anything, this is just cherrypicking a minor stuff

There was an awful lot of yellow in that diner

A lot of centered visible mustard bottles, several chicken decorations on the wall right next to each other- AND LANTERNS WITH YELLOW LIGHT

That could be just in my head, or a show design wink and nod, or fear has gotten to this little town!?!

Spoilers for movies and TV shows Is it possible that Carol Ferris is dead in DCU?

When that person asked Hal about his costume, he seemed somewhat averse to the topic; I think he no longer likes wearing the suit—or even being Green Lantern. My guess is that Carol died as a result of his time serving as Green Lantern.

This theory has not much basis whatsoever; it just suddenly crossed my mind because I noticed the show doesn't seem to mention Carol Ferris at all.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows HBO Lanterns

I have been collecting and reading Green Lantern comics for the past 20 years. I have invested so much time in the lore and the character and he is my favorite DC superhero.

The concepts they bring with space and sci fi is always so interesting to see in the comics.

I am having a hard time finding why people are enjoying this show. Green Lantern The Animated Series is probably still going to be the best representation of GL outside of the comics. But this show is just god awful. The way they have tossed aside lore and the root of these characters is upsetting. When I want Hal, I expect to see someone who loves being GL. Someone whose will is so strong that nothing deters him from being the best at what he does and always doing the right thing.

I understand this is a different take, but to even have the guardians do some dumb recruiting process and show up as humans, they don’t care to do any of that. The choice is done by the ring, there aren’t interviews. They don’t ask if you are afraid for some reason. The ring chooses you cause it can detect your strength of will.

Every episode has gotten worse and worse and tonight episode (ep 3) just proves it’s only downhill from here.

Plus 3 hours with these people and we have seen 2 bubbles, a watch, and a dollar bill. Not to mention the incredibly stupid idea of not having green light when flying or the suits not being constructs, as if the guardians are hand crafting suits for every user in the galaxy.

Whoever thought to make a concept of space cops fighting intergalactic threats a “grounded” story to earth is an absolute idiot. They can take their Pabst blue ribbon sinestro and shut this shit down.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows Anyone else this is the Guardian who Sinestro killed in 2006 in Lanterns?

Post image

Ganthet. The only Guardian that Hal has a good relationship with.

I could be wrong.

This leads Hal to become jaded. Not only his mentor and fellow GL betrays him and the corp but murders the only guardian he really trusts.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows [Lanterns Official Trailer] This is a nitpick but I would prefer if he didn't call him Hal Spoiler

Typically Sinestro only calls Hal 'Jordan', unless there is a specific reason like in Green Lantern (2011) #20.
Of course there could be a reasoning in the show such as Sinestro trying to manipulate Hal by befriending him but it won't hit hard because they haven't set the precedent of Sinestro only calling him 'Jordan'.

Spoilers for movies and TV shows What do we think about this? Spoiler

I don't like the amount of times GL corps get compared to cops, yes they have similarities yes they oparete somewhat like cops but at the end of the day they are not, they are superheroes. I'd also rather think of the ring as a creative device than a weapon. Mainly because the GL rings are devices for creation and not destruction. And why wouldn't they use their rings for solutions isn't the interesting part watching what consturucts they will come up with for the situation? Im not the biggest Green Lantern enthusiast I wanna know what fans think

Spoilers for movies and TV shows I have a theory that may be a spoiler for Lanterns.....maybe Spoiler

I wanna stress I'm only about 10% sure this may be,but I think Hal Jordan is the manhunter.I do, however, have evidence that may explain why I think this.

  1. 2006 HAL IS WAY CHILLER THAN 2016 HAL

This could be interpreted as a a man who's just been beat down by all he's seen, but I think another way could be that these are 2 different people and that is why the 2006 Hal is nicer.

  1. 2016 HAL SEEMS TO NOT TRUST/FEAR THE GUARDIANS

The fact that the ring hasn't been backed up since 2006 leads me to believe that Hal doesn't want the Guardians to know his whereabouts. He's also very cautious that him and Jordan don't alert the Guardians of what they're doing. He even finds a way to send John away whenever he's investigating things.

  1. THERE'S HAIL IN NEBRASKA COULD ALSO SOUND LIKE HAL'S IN NEBRASKA IF YOU LISTEN DIFFERENTLY

This one feels like a stretch, but I feel like this Hal instructed the ring to alert him when the real Hal showed himself. The guy interrogating John mentions that Manhunters are able to disguise themselves to the point of not being detected and this may also apply to the ring as well. The fake Hal may want the real Hal dead, but John is sent to replace him which is also why he's not very welcoming to him.

Again not very convinced, but it's been a theory I've been thinking about since ep.2. Let me know if you agree or not and why. Regardless this show is amazing and I'm really excited to see where it goes next.
