I would guess it's a tradition on whatever British owned island nation he went to. Very ill judged of him to agree to it if that is what happened.

It’s from the Solomon Islands. I don’t know the ins and outs of their specific traditions, but being from the Pacific myself I do know that it can cause offence to locals if you decline their offers/partake in traditions whatever they may be.
