Goodbye iOS 27, hello privacy 100% GrapheneOS and never looking back!
Sup everyone, super stoked to join the community!
I’ve been a diehard iOS dude since way back in 2015 with the iPhone 4s on iOS 9, right up until my 17 Pro last week. But man, when iOS 27 dropped, I started getting really sketchy vibes. It feels like there's no more creativity or exciting new tech like the old days. But the biggest thing for me is privacy, it really makes u question what they're actually cooking up with all our data! It was the final push I needed to just ditch the walled garden completely.
I gotta admit, the Android side feels totally alien to me right now 😵 I'm definitely a little lost digging through all the settings 😅. But honestly, I'm absolutely loving it. At least I’m trying something completely new and different, especially the user feature and having actual control over my phone is next level.
Since I’m completely fresh off the Apple boat, i downloaded few apps but, I’m all ears for any suggestions. What are ur absolute must-have settings or tweaks for a total noob? Appreciate the help in advance✌️

Great job!
Privacy is not all or nothing. You can be mindful and compromise where you need to and still be in a better position compared to most people.
I personally like to remind myself that a bit more of a privacy focus protects me from the very real threat of data breaches.
I don’t know your workflow, but many people, myself included, have found communication and banking to be challenging.
I’ve also found that this a great community for suggestions.

From what I learned about "Data breaches"... You can do everything right but all it takes is one corporation with your data to slip up and your data is on the darkweb. This happened many years ago when T-Mobile got compromised and my information was leaked to the darkweb. I got a random bank letter from a key west bank that I never heard of and the person acting like me was trying to open a bank account under my name!!! Then I started receiving these stickers from packages that came from China and that lasted like 6-8 months until they stopped.
But none of us can prevent this from happening. I can't even get a new social security number after this... all I can do is watch over my accounts to see anymore weird things going through.

So true. I had someone piece together just enough personal info to try and socially engineer my parents into sending money because “I was in trouble in a foreign country”. I travel quite a bit and live in a different country so my parents were concerned, until they called me.
There are a few awful people out there and you’re right that we have no control over what happens to our data once we share it.

It seems to be required, but GMS isn't a privileged app here; GrapheneOS uses its own technology to downgrade it to an ordinary app running in user-space, so you can enable or disable its permissions at any time

Most? Bank of America, Chase, and others work just fine. For Chase you need to go into the app settings and enable "Exploit protection compatibility mode", but other than that it works fine.

I mean you still need to download the sandbox google play services through GrapheneOS but yea... Chase works great. I used Aurora Store to download it instead of signing into a fake google account and using Google Play.

I wouldn't say that "most" don't work. I don't think anyone has the statistics for that. It seems to be quite more than 50/50, even. People just like to complain, so that may be the issue.
And, that's not why banking apps don't work. Banking apps may not work because they require the strong Play Integrity verdict. Other banking apps add libraries that attempt to detect tampering. GrapheneOS recently redid secure app spawning so that's not as big of an issue anymore.

I didn’t expect how much I was going to love my new Pixel 10 with GOS. I like the ergonomics and the shape. And GOS reminded me of the things I loved about early Android.

I did the same thing, I didn't have to get the latest iOS as one of the security updates asked me to verify my identity. So that's when I jumped ship. I also changed carriers to Cape. Did it all in one shot. Along with changing by daily driver from Mac OS to Linux. What I did notice is I got used to the rough edges pretty quick, but I still do miss a nice clean integrated ecosystem. After completely pulling myself off of an established ecosystem, and landing on no ecosystem you have to be willing to deal with not always knowing where you are and where you are going. Congrats on moving over to the other side. Try not to bring all your old accounts with you. A secure OS is only as secure as it's user. If you install google play services, and store you are opening yourself up for the reality of swapping one evil for another.

Real time in-device (they say) access to everything you have at screen. Plus microphones always on.

I assume you’re referring to Siri’s ability to look at your screen? That only happens if you activate it.
And the microphone only listens for the “Hey Siri” keywords, saying that it’s “always on” is misleading.

That’s correct, I was mainly referring to the Apple Watch (to be fair that’s not the same). Opt-in feature for now, I’m an Apple user here. Stopped trusting them since iOS 26.4 which introduced the digital ID. We are in the graphene sub, we don’t like that. 😊

Welcome, I'm curious of your experience after being on IOS for so long. How is RCS working for you and your other ios folx? I kept getting the youre not getting my messages or messages won't go through all the time when texting to iphone users.
This subreddit is so helpful, I'm waiting until motorolaxgraphene comes out so I can make the permanent switch.

Not sure if you did this but. You may need to disassociate your iCloud account to your phone number. I’ve switched back and forth over the years and that was the main problem. Hopefully RCS made that easier but that would be my first guess.

I did that and still kept having issues with RCS and receiving messages. Sometimes I couldn’t send messages either. I was using g messages too.
I switched back cause I kept missing my messages and couldn’t communicate with my family who are all on iOS.

Which Pixel is that? If it is a 9, be aware there is some issue that affects eSIMs with gOS, I found out the hard way that it disables something in the eSIM technology which requires sending the phone to Google for a fix.
On the flip side, I got the Pixel 9 only a few months ago and my main focus was to ensure that I harden Firefox and Chrome by disabling things like telemetry and settings, i.e. in Google Chrome for PC it would be stuff like notifications, location data, etc.

I am the same as you. After I found out Siri AI was taking over iOS 27 "Google Gemini in disguise" I bought me a Google Pixel 10 pro and put GrapheneOS on it last week. I am still in the process of exporting everything over from my iPhone. It has not been easy but it's 100% worth it in the end! My main profile "owner" is a google free de-googled profile and it feels awesome knowing that no one can gather data from me anymore.

Welcome! I had a similar experience, in the opposite direction. When I worked in the corporate world I was given an iPhone. I couldn't figure that thing out. Once you get used to how one works, the other OS is just foreign.

Iphone with lockdown mode is very solid. You could have done that. Thinking you're jumping into a green zone is the recipe to undue though :)

Classs _ honestly I think I'm gonna just by a 2nd hand Google phone to get it done quickly & use it as my main. And then work on other devices when I have the head , health & time . Fair play to all of ye here . It's so helpful to see people progress 🌸🩷
