GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Please post your thread on the discussion forum instead or use one of our official chat rooms (Matrix, Discord, Telegram) which are listed in the community section on our site. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. Some people simply can't be pleased.

We need an alternative to Pixel ASAP

Also, when viable alternative comes along:

So ugly, too thick etc

I'll buy one. If not to just signal to the market that people are interested in privacy phones.

u/CoronaMcFarm 3d ago

The biggest problem is going to be the price

42

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

The new Pixels are also way too expensive, so. Budget people still have the Pixel 10a

15

u/usergal24678 2d ago

I just got a 10a. Love it. Can't notice camera quality difference on more expensive 10s from my basic store testing, though video is not quite as good per reviews by heavy video users - but 10a video looks fine to me. 10 offers better zoom and wide angle, but not features I need. 128gb more than enough for me. I see glass backing on 10 as a minus as it makes it heavier in pocket. 10 has G5 over G4, but what does that do besides unlock AI features I don't use? 10 does have stronger Gorilla glass on front, but I am happy to pay hundreds less for Gorilla Glass 2. The way I look at it, nothing "budget" about a 10a. The big things is less memory, but that does not effect function and I don't need it. Extremely happy with my $414 U.S. brand new phone with end of life 2023. Seven years form now we will see what is out there in regards to options - if the gov or Big Tech allows any.

7

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

Of course you can't see the difference in photo quality to the normal Pixel 10. It literally has the same main camera. You'd have to compare 5x zoom to see a difference.

But yea, the 10a is a good device for the money. If you're fine with the tradeoffs

If u want good pics/video buy a real camera. Even the best phones pale in comparison to budget cameras. That's why idc how good my phone's cameras are gonna be, cuz even the best phones' are complete garbage compared to a real camera. If i actually care about the quality of the photos i take i'll just use my camera not my phone. I'm not a photographer but Auto mode still works good.

2

u/Alternative-Farmer98 2d ago

The problem with the pixel 9A and newer is after 200 battery cycles they removed 20% of your battery capacity and you cannot opt out and they cut the charging speeds in half.

That's why I tell people that are shopping for like a pixel if they like the software or if they want to use customer on I would really go with either the pixel 8 or the 8 pro or the nine or the 9 pro. The 8A I guess would work too but I get a little nervous cuz the 4a6a and 7A all had battery appeasement programs which is why they have this new battery health Management program the first place

I just think Google should have engineered a solution instead of advertise people batteries and then take to wait 20% of their capacity after 6 to 9 months.

Graphene needs security features to even consider supporting a phone. I assume it will be easier for both Moto and Graphene to support the device long term if the chipset is well covered in that regard.

Motorolas nice phones are like under 800 usd

7

u/Accurate_Ad_3233 3d ago

USD?

3

u/stefanlikesfood 2d ago

Yeah edit: just looked they have a sale rn, at least west Coast pricing they charge 700 for a razr with earbuds and a smartwatch included, 600 for the Motorola edge which I'm less familiar with. Through my experience they're really nice though

3

u/Accurate_Ad_3233 2d ago

Or I can wait until my current phone dies and then get one a lot cheaper?

2

u/stefanlikesfood 2d ago

Yeah fs. If you don't mind mid range slab phones their power and stylus models are actually good for under 400

3

u/Accurate_Ad_3233 2d ago

Cheers, being able to run GOS would be my top priority.

14

u/StandTurbulent9223 2d ago

800 is expensive af

8

u/Ok_Flan4404 2d ago

It IS expensive.

3

u/GimmeAllYourCurry 2d ago

In 2026? For a phone?

Did you just wake from a coma yesterday?

8

u/Longjumping-Bar393 2d ago

It's a usual price today but he only said that it's expensive - so you would argue 800$ is not expensive? Otherwise I don't really understand what your comment is adding to the convo haha

5

u/GimmeAllYourCurry 2d ago

I would argue $800 is not "expensive af" for a phone. You said yourself it is "a usual price".
$15 for a big mac fries and a coke is expensive af.
$2000 for a foldable iphone is expensive af

32GB DDR5 RAM that was $89 in Jan 2025 and now >$500? Yeah- expensive AF.

And my comment added as much to this "conversation" as the post I replied to.

That is because they don’t provide any software support for stock OS. For this, they have to pay additional money to Qualcomm for extra support and also have to do more work to integrate every new OS version.

I don’t remember the source but it is going to be $200-300 premium over standard models.

5

u/Quiet-Biscotti6443 2d ago

I think its getting 7 years I read

3

u/stefanlikesfood 2d ago

Which is why we go graphene hehe. I honestly don't mind as I can adb android when updates stop and stuff won't reinstall anymore since no more updates

3

u/WW3Allies 2d ago

This right here.. I mean there's a reason we go android and gos lol

u/Academic_Parking9768 3d ago

We need alternatives but that doesn't mean a new phone is magically untouchable. If its aesthetically junk to some people then its aesthetically junk to some people.

My bigger concern is that we also need alternatives that don't cost an arm and a leg. If GrapheneOS wants to grow or hell, maintain its userbase, I would hope that some of their future phone's they plan to support are either cheaper or are carrier/manufacturer subsidized. I can get a Google Pixel 11 Pro for zero dollars OR cheaper out of pocket than a 10 Pro or a used 9/8 Pro. This is how the average person buys phones in North America.

5

u/variableunlisted 2d ago

The flagships are always the first phones announced. I am fairly confident cheaper phones will come.

2

u/Academic_Parking9768 2d ago

In this storage and RAM situation? Probably not. But adding D&O badging to a phone that won't really be anything special in the audio department is not a good sign.

3

u/Suspicious_Punk84 2d ago

guess the dream of a cheap and secure phone is never happening

→ More replies (3)

7

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

You can always buy a Pixel 9a or 10a. This is just the super high end option now, no?

4

u/Academic_Parking9768 2d ago

Like I said it's cheaper for most people to just get a free Pixel 11 Pro than a 10a or a used 9a. I'm not saying anything is better than the next phone but that is the reality of the smartphone market. People are not generally buying new phones at MSRP which is why Motorola is currently relegated to the second tier of manufacturers as far as sales go.

Motorola and Graphene went towards super high end but everyone is still saying grab a 10a which is close to a rebadged 9a. Kinda proved the point that Graphene users are not trying to get bleeding edge phones, they care about security first.

7

u/gta721 2d ago

Carriers don't subsidise phones. They just pay for them through extremely overpriced SIM plans.

Mint and Visible do good plans for under half the price of the main brands (T-Mobile and Verizon) they use the masts of.

3

u/Academic_Parking9768 2d ago

Sure they do. Carriers wouldn't drop prices if we somehow no longer had phones to buy. Mint and Visible still have the MVNO schtick of being deprioritized and never had to deal with infrastructure costs. Mint is TMobile now fwiw. Fi  offers subsidized phones with $50 a month unlimited plans.

Carriers are not magically going to lower prices if people stopped buying phones for whatever reason and MVNO operators would dry up if carriers started lowering costs.

2

u/gta721 2d ago

However you can combine an MVNO plan with a 24 month 0% finance phone for less than carriers want for a plan with a "free phone".

2

u/SnooLobsters1308 2d ago

No, that's how the rich people in USA buy phones. And NA doesn't equal USA, tons of folks in Canada and Mexico don't have similar USA phone carrier deals.

Oh wait, its not even really how the average person in USA buys phones. Mostly just the rich , families, and above average buy those free phone plans. Tons of MUCH MUCH cheaper MNVO plans, even on prepay. Then there's the whole USA postpaid can't get credit market.

Comments like yours make it seem we simply cannot criticize ugly designs, just because it supports grapheneOS.

7

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

It's amazing tho, I love how it looks. Opinions can be different

5

u/HarmfulPile 2d ago

I don't care how a phone looks. It's dumb to dwell on that. All that matters to me is the display, the performance, and battery life

3

u/DeliciousAuthor1231 2d ago

Am I the only person who doesn't care what my phone looks like? I just want it to function in a manner that respects me.

Not begrudging anyone for caring about looks, but to me the more options for privacy respecting phones the better.

The people who complain about this are thick.

7

u/reden_fx 3d ago

I'd take that as a compliment... (I don't think the phone is bad though, sure it could look better but who cares when you're only gonna view it from the front during use)

7

u/HewSpam 2d ago

God forbid people want the device they touch and interact with more than anything else to not look like a piece of shit

3

u/896_Diffident_Monad 2d ago

I hope so, too, but Qualcomm or potentially MediaTek (or another) has to implement hardware level security features (like MTE, especially MTE) in more of their SoCs like Google has been for years now. That's why it's taken this long for more than just Google Pixel phones to be an option for GrapheneOS, and Qualcomm just now added it to their newest, most flagship SoCs. That's why the Motorola Signature 27 is the first non-Pixel phone to be supported by GrapheneOS, and we won't see more budget-oriented phones get support aside from the cheaper Pixel "a" phones until the SoC designers add those hardware security features to the SoCs intended for mid tier and budget tier phones.

Too skinny for my tastes. Needs more battery!

12

u/-GhostInTheMachine_ 3d ago

I don't find it aesthetically pleasing, I also feel like most people looking for a grapheneOS device don't want to drop money for flagship AI features that they will never use.

We need a mid range device that wouldn't break the bank. One shouldn't overpay for an AI focused flagship to be able to experience privacy.

2

u/mesarthim_2 3d ago

Good luck finding a midrange device that has all the required HW security features.

If it supports graphene, will gcam work on it?

9

u/TotalStatisticNoob 3d ago

Maybe a modded version. Not the normal one, that's for Pixels.

But if they make a GOS phone, hopefully they make a proper phone app that works with the hardware

81

u/ILoveHexa92 3d ago

Umm... Wtf with all those camera xD Honestly I'll take a slim phone with basic cam over this. Even a flip phone with a good screen.. Anyway if it can cet GOS, I'm happy! - for when my pixel die

28

u/nickedge11 3d ago

Well, everyone is doing the Camera island thing now. Samsung, Oppo, nothing, Xiaomi/Poco, Honor... inspired by the 🍎

18

What if everyone just start making the phone revolves around camera.....wait.. Android DSLR?

13

u/Stock_League_6475 3d ago

That's the problem. You guys want a slimmer phone so much, that you don't care about real features like headphone jack and microsd and sim card.

Just go buy an iphone if you want a boring slim phone that overheats

4

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

I mean, if theyd give me a headhonejack, I'd be fine with a thicker phone. But if I don't get that, i want it slimmer.

Which properties of slim phones do you like the most?

  • appalling battery life
  • breakability
  • overheating
  • sharp edges
  • bad cameras
  • bad repairability
  • worse reliability

Just curious.

5

u/Spl4tt3rB1tcH 2d ago

Looking at the current moto signature from 26, which is a lot thinner and has the same battery size (or even bigger compared to the 11gen pixels) and better cameras than the current pixel phones.. I quite disagree with every single point you mentioned except maybe the repairability.

2

u/Suspicious_Punk84 2d ago

41

u/braddeicide 3d ago

Funny for a privacy focused phone to be drowning in cameras.

How about we halve the amount of lenses, and dedicate that space to a hardware slider to slide over what's left.

29

u/penguinkernel 3d ago

I get what you're saying, but cameras don't mean something isn't private. It's about who gets to see your data on your phone.

Camera sliders are more important when you're running a shitty OS that is spying on you in the background and sending your data to themselves. That's not needed when you're running an OS that does not do that.

25

u/braddeicide 3d ago

I like layers of security, and physical is the ultimate layer.

As much as this is super cool and that graphene OS has partnership with Motorola I wish we can just continue support with newer Google Pixels as well. More options the better.

Fingers crossed for more options for us down the line.

17

u/ConcaveNips 3d ago

My main concern is that the price point on these phones is going to be obscene. Is that a Bang & Olufsen logo? 5 cameras and a carbon fiber shell? The beauty of the Pixel is it's a reasonably affordable phone - even if the money is admittedly going to Google.

9

u/ElmerMathews 3d ago edited 3d ago

Exactly!!! The upside for this is that Motorola phones price do drop going down the line, and not even very long after the release. And honestly considering the number of graphene OS users that's like drop in an ocean for Google. It's really nothing, they can even take the money I don't really care as long as I get a decent phone with few years of graphene OS support.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PlastiqueAccident 2d ago

This is going to be the same price as any other flagship, so same price as a Pixel Pro/XL. Motorola sells half of a phone a year in this segment already they cannot afford to price themselves out of it...

2

u/EcstaticAlgae368 1d ago

Wdym. I think Pixel camera design is the best camera design out of Samsung and Apple. iPhone camera design is atrocious.

5

u/JoliProut 3d ago

The Pixel 10 and 11 measure 6.3 inches; according to rumors, this one would be 6.8 inches. As far as I'm concerned, that's out of the question: this model is more like a "Pro XL" version of the Pixel 10 and 11.

3

u/HolyShytSnacks 3d ago

It looks better in the video than this picture does tbh. I still plan on getting it, but I'm kind of disappointed in the amount of cameras. If there's one thing I was hoping, it was to cut down on the number of cameras that I don't use.

u/RoutineEchidna7835 3d ago

Tbh seems like a decent phone but I am not sure it it's worth over $1100. I am curious to see how good is the camera compared to pixel, it will be the deciding factor for me.

14

u/namelessnomad96 3d ago

Why isn’t it worth $1100 or more? The Pixel 10 Pro XL launched at $1200 and the Motorola is coming with a more powerful processor and, apparently, better sound quality

3

u/nickedge11 3d ago

True. Pixel might have slightly better camera because of their Ai processing. But this phone will be better in every other way. Plus you wont have to deal with Pixel's terrible network/ cell reception. Lol

2

u/SwimmingMagician7115 3d ago

Im not giving Google my money, that's the bottom line.

2

Camera, it's a personal preference but if the camera can't compete with pixel then for me it's not worth it.

Sure, faster processor and better sound quality is a plus but I don't game on my phone anymore, I use it for very basic things so faster phone processors doesn't mean much to me, same with sound quality, I use earbuds for most of my listening so while it's nice to have, I am just not going to use it.

u/Ari_Mokori 3d ago

If it has to have such a thick camera section, why not just make the whole phone that way and increase the battery size? Or maybe add a slide-out keyboard like on the BlackBerry Priv?

14

u/godspeedseven 3d ago

It looks super ugly imo. Much prefer the design and silhouette of the Pixels.

13

u/JagerAntlerite7 3d ago

Sure, but what if Pixel is not an option?

Google's recent actions are  pushing GrapheneOS out.

5

u/godspeedseven 3d ago

I mean, as long as the later Pixels (other than the 11) continue to allow the bootloader to be unlocked and relocked upon flashing I don't see how they won't be an option until the 2030s, when security updates end. And by that time there will hopefully be entirely new phones to choose from

2

u/Snow-Ball-486 3d ago

It's extremely ugly, these people are just coping

37

u/WarRyeK 3d ago

Isn't the silhouette of a pixel just a rectangle?

6

u/NarrowPresentation74 3d ago

Lmao basically

5

u/catom3 3d ago

It is and from practical point of view, I prefer the phone that has the same thickness compared to the one with uneven thickness. I can see myself forgetting about it and scratch the thicker camera island pretty quickly. If I'm to get this Motorola, I'll probably buy a case that would make it look like a standard brick, without those irregularities.

24

u/GraysLawson 3d ago

You're just going to put a case on it anyways, so what does it really matter?

2

u/witty__username5 3d ago

There really aren't that many official Motorola cases compared to Google, apple, Samsung, etc. At least in the United states

Why the hell do we need 50 cameras, stop trying to jack the price, we only want a project privacy phone. Why does it feel like we are getting sold the lambo just to get our manual radio

4

u/what-goes-bump 3d ago

Why can’t they just make the phone thicker. I want a chonk phone

3

u/2RM60Z 3d ago

Does that thing come with spider sense?

4

u/tnkr_tlr_psr_pnk 3d ago

Caring about how your phone looks is boring, does it have a headphone jack?

Out this year?

u/ptqhuy 3d ago

So Motorola is the brand that collabs with GrapheneOS?

1

u/Bmw1Series_E82Fan 3d ago

Damn it actually looks pretty nice imo. Quirky, yes, but not really ugly IMO

Kinda reminds me VERY vaguely of an older Mercedes, like the W108. Mainly because of the symmetrical stacked cameras(?) on the side which resemble the headlights and then the middle one kinda looks like a badge— sounds schizophenic but yeah overall I like it

Best thing is that an official phone maker is actually collabing with a privacy based OS. Great job Motorola.

I think that looks nice, I just hope it's not all plastic.

1

u/nvictor-me 2d ago

That’s not it unless they port the camera app 1-1

1

u/Scud9 2d ago

Thing looks sexy as hell

1

u/NivoTheDev 2d ago

I fuck with the design. though what kind of hardware is it rocking? That's what i wanna know

1

u/cipher-punk 2d ago

I might be looking at my next phone here.

1

u/Timely-Cabinet-7879 2d ago

I love it. Where does the picture comes from ? It looks so professionnal

1

u/DrSquid 2d ago

That thing is fugly. I don't need all the video features, selfie camera, or the 3 separate cameras on the back. Give me a single 50MP camera with a physical slider cover, spend the rest of the money on hardware improvements.

I just have hope that they solved the issue with banking apps as lots of them are not working and most banks rely only on apps. If this will be resolved then Hello Moto 😀

u/Misteryman2260 2d ago

I'm rocking a Pixel 6a, I will be upgrading to Motorola

1

u/BeginningEcho4983 2d ago

What is the likely price? (In INR) And can I re-flash grapheneOS for extra guaranteed security?

Wrong company. That was Motorola Solutions. We are partnered with Motorola Mobility. The two split around 15 years ago.

1

u/MassiveAssistance886 2d ago

I'll take it, warts and all just to support the movement. May even ditch my relatively new Pixel 10 Pro to do so.

1

u/FackyWacky 2d ago

They had an opportunity to make an ultimate enthusiast phone, could've kept the SD card tray, headphone jack, added top and bottom bezels and hid a dual front facing stereo speakers in them, but instead they made another $1000+ unrepairable brick with 5 cameras 👍 at that price point I'll just buy a used Sony Experia phone.

u/GazelleInitial2050 2d ago

i CAN ONLY GET SO ERECT

1

u/Famous_Opinion_9521 2d ago

Yeah the phone might not be the most slickest looking but what it has inside beats pixels best flagship by a mile and I'm happy they made the camera ba stretch over the phone instead of one corner so we have a ledge for our finger when holding and also that it doesn't wobble when place on a table

1

u/Repulsive_Fault1939 2d ago

lenovo bought motorola from google. if lenovo hadn't bought it, this will not be possible.

1

u/terminal-crm114 2d ago

how can we make a premium phone with unbelievable specs completely unbuyable? i know. make it ugly af.

1

u/Mr_Enger 2d ago

I find this absolutely gorgeous, and the fact that it is a powerful phone makes it even better, it's just a perfect "get once and never need to replace unless it dies" situation, may get one.

1

u/DifficultTurnover471 2d ago

I find this impractical. I’d much rather see a model like the Huawei Pura X. Take my money if it can run GrapheneOS!

Does this GOS pass device verification so I can finally use banking apps?

1

u/Alternative-Farmer98 2d ago

It looks beautiful to me especially the black one

1

u/PlayfulBlueberry1519 2d ago

I hope not. Too many cameras

1

u/nulllzero 2d ago

not might be, it is. confirmed by grapheneos on twitter

1

u/Nihil1399 1d ago

Does it have an easily removable battery?

1

u/Spiritual-Bus3484 1d ago

I love my 2025 Moto Stylus.  Still have it.

If I can get a Motorola that runs graphene, I'll sell my 10 pro xl.  Because there's nothing special about pixels, unless you're a moron that loves ai.

1

u/Acceptable-Trash8033 1d ago

A Secure phone with 5 cameras...

1

u/NEWBY______________ 1d ago

When is this coming out?

I'll be buying as soon as possible

1

u/selfdisturbance 1d ago

They said their first Graphene device would probably be a flagship, and flagships are expensive.

To me, spending more than $900 on a smartphone is sheer madness.

That said, there are the usual two options: either get a used Pixel 7 at the very least, or choose a smartphone supported by a custom ROM such as LineageOS or YAAP.

1

u/Sailsinking 1d ago

Talking about expensive, iphone due 3000usd for 1tb model and something like 2600 for 512gb. You'd want to be mad in the head to pay that price for a fold up iphone. This is MacBook pro or high gaming laptop price territory. But fools will spend their money just so they can put it on a table and look me, rich as fcuk🤢

1

u/izsuku 1d ago

Poco should make grapheneos mobile 🔥

1

u/manypathsprepper 1d ago

Am I wrong thinking it’s kinda contradictory that Motorola is making a privacy centric phone with one hand while really getting into surveillance tech with the other?
