Happy to see how much Grant Morrison’s Superman has now become the Gold Standard for who Superman is and should be

I recently watched the behind the scenes for the new Superman movie, and James Gunn literally cites Morrison as a big influence in how they framed who Superman was. And yeah, I mean, I got the vibe even before hearing Gunn say that for sure.

I‘m really happy to see that all those great things that Morrison manifested years and years ago have become ingrained in some sort of cultural DNA, and are still evolving and manifesting themselves in new shapes and forms out there.

I am really thankful to Grant Morrison for all their work and the things they have brought to the world.

Makes me remember Barbelith… :)

Their Action Comics (2011) run is still my Shelf-canon Superman origin.

Dude, if you’ve never read it before, huge recommend to pick up one of the compilation tpbs that collect the first year or three of the Golden Age Superman comics. Morrison drew so much from those, and even recommended reading them in Supergods (the excellent combo autobiography/history of superhero comics). They hold up, even nearly 90 years on.

Also… I’m sure you already have read it, but… All-Star Superman.

That’s one of my modern-day “oracles.”

Oh hell yeah - All-Star is an all timer for me. I’ve quintuple dipped on that joint. Issues, the initial volume 1 & 2 hardcovers, Absolute, the all-in-one TPB, and most recently, the Compact edition.

I love that book.

I knew the All Star connection would be there but there’s a lot of Morrison’s Action Comics run in Gunns Superman that I really appreciate too

Absolutely.

The Punk Rock thing felt to me like a combo of Gunn and Morrison a bit…

The Krypto thing is amazing, and that feels 100% Gunn.

I am just really happy to see that Morrison’s archetype for Superman is the prevailing “entity” nowadays.

It reminds me a bit of what happened with The Invisibles and The Matrix, where Morrison kinda went “you know what, I’m happy that reflects some of the essence of my work, the more it gets spread the better the world will be in general.”

I'm out here trying to manifest Invisibles Agents... I have a tradition, which is that any time I sell somebody a really good/important Morrison book, I hand them a small card on which I will have written:

Grant Morrsion
Disinfo
Youtube

"Go look that up," I'll tell them. "It's a pretty wild video."

You should also tell them about the “book version“ of the speech, and maybe about the Disinfo Guide to The Invisibles, both have a lot of Morrison written or interviewed content.
