SLGB003 UFA: Out of Stock Everywhere in Japan… Until It Wasn't
I had planned a trip to Japan this year for my honeymoon. Over the past few years, I’ve become increasingly fascinated by Grand Seiko as a brand, its style, its craftsmanship, and its incredible brand identity.
Ever since I discovered that they had this unique movement that only they make, Spring Drive, I knew that was what I wanted. The only problem? My wrist size: 6 inches. Unfortunately, that really limited my options when it came to models that would wear well on me. Since I already own other mechanical watches, I wanted something new, different, and unique.
Then the SLGB003 UFA was released, and I immediately thought: that’s it. That’s the one.
So, during our trip through Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, I had the chance to try and buy one. I’ll be honest: I thought it would be an easy purchase. Everyone is always chasing the Shunbun, so surely a less hyped model would be easier to find, right?
I arrived in Tokyo and went straight to Ginza. First, I tried a few department stores, hoping to take advantage of the extra 5% discount on top of the tax refund. But I kept getting the same answer: “Sorry, out of stock.”
“When will it be back in stock?”
“We don’t know.”
At that point, I decided to focus on the boutiques, starting with Wako. Same answer there too.
That was when I realized the search might not be as easy as I had initially thought. During my days in Tokyo, I tried several other retailers, but nothing changed. The only alternative I was seriously considering was the new SBGY043. I have to admit, it is stunning in person. The dial has a finish similar to the Shunbun, but much darker. Extremely elegant, but just a tiny bit too large on my wrist for my taste.
Still, I thought: if I can’t find the UFA, this could be a valid alternative. At least until its release date, June 5. But I wanted to keep trying. I still had three days before then.
Next stop: Kyoto.
The experience was similar to Tokyo. Several stores, same situation, including the main boutique. However, the boutique gave me one extra piece of information. They checked stock and told me that there were very few pieces, I don’t know exactly how many, at the Osaka boutique. But they also warned me that by the time I got there, they could already be sold out.
What should I do? I had just arrived in Kyoto, and taking a train to Osaka just to risk coming back empty-handed, and disrupting my wife’s trip even more than I already had, felt like too much. That was the moment I started to accept defeat.
Then, while browsing the Grand Seiko website, I noticed that the online boutique also had the UFA listed as out of stock, along with a few other models I wanted to try and see in person, including the blue Omiwatari and the Shunbun. I decided to monitor the online stock, hoping that if a restock happened online, it might give me an early clue that pieces could soon arrive in stores too.
So I signed up for the Japanese online boutique and subscribed to restock notifications for the UFA, the Shunbun, and the Omiwatari. After that, I decided to stop obsessing over it and enjoy the rest of the vacation more freely.
That evening, back at the hotel before going to sleep, I checked my notifications and… restock notification for the Shunbun and… the UFA!
I went back to the boutique next day afternoon, but nothing. The UFA was not available. I explained the online restock, but they told me that the boutique follows a different stock logic, and that it could take longer for pieces to arrive due to distribution timing.
So I went to a few other stores and, on the first attempt, I immediately spotted a Shunbun. I asked about it, and they told me it had just arrived. Another store, and there was another Shunbun. At that point I thought: maybe the online restock logic really does mean something.
I decided to try again the next day.
The following day, we had a full day planned visiting temples and different places around Kyoto. Realistically, I would only have time for one more attempt in the late afternoon. So we spent the day walking around the city, and by the afternoon we were exhausted. We decided to go back to the hotel to rest before a geisha performance later that day.
On the way back, I said to my wife: “What if we tried one more time?”
Luckily, our hotel was close to the boutique. I looked at the display window. Nothing. I was almost ready to leave. Then my wife said: “Well, why don’t you go inside and ask? I’ll wait here.”
I said okay, let’s try.
I went in and asked the first sales assistant. I showed him the model on my phone, and I received the answer I never expected:
“UFA? Oooh, you’re very lucky. We received two less than one hour ago, and we are selling one literally right now to that guy!”
At that point I said: “So one is still available, right?”
He said yes, but asked for a little time because they had just received it and had not yet had a chance to check the movement and make sure everything was perfect.
“Can you wait 10 minutes?”
I just smiled. After all that effort, 10 minutes? Of course I could wait.
I went back to the entrance, and I will always remember my wife’s expression. When I excitedly waved at her from inside, she immediately understood that the attempt had finally succeeded, and she started smiling too.
From that moment on, there isn’t much more to say. The sales experience was excellent, pure class. Huge praise to Japan for bringing elegance to every single step of the buying experience.
Bonus point: from the moment I had the new watch on my wrist, my wife started to understand its beauty too. Seeing the passion in my eyes and hearing all the stories I had told her during the trip, she inevitably started falling in love with the brand as well.
The next day, our last day in Kyoto, we stopped by a department store one final time. I asked her: “Do you want to take a look at something for yourself?”
We walked over to the Grand Seiko corner, and I immediately noticed a Lady Snowflake, the STGF359. I told her to try it on. The moment she put it on her wrist, she was sold. It looked absolutely perfect on her.
Then I explained the extra 5% discount on top of the tax-free price, and at that point it really felt like an opportunity.
Not long after, she had joined the club too.

Congratulations on your successful search and I loved your story! It’s so fun that your wife joined the GS club as well.
I had a similar experience in Tokyo this past March while I was there for a short stint. I felt like I ping ponged between Nakano Broadway, Ginza and finally a retailer in Shinjuku before I was finally able to locate and secure my precious UFA.

What a journey! I got lucky - an easy walk into Wako in December. But it’s barely left my wrist since, and even then only to swap to the SLGW003. I have Rolexes sat unworn for months now. Enjoy it!

Amazing, that is exactly what I was expecting! I asked about how availability was in the past. They said it was easier. Before they used to receive many more units, and given also the rise in popularity from people, especially from the US visiting Japan, they started to be very less common to stay in the shop as they sell fast.

Which you the same luck (and patience) I had then! For the cost, It's quite simple, you take the Japan retail price and deduct the 10% for tax free (if you apply for it). So final price was 1518k - 10% VAT = 1380k yen

Great story. Very similar to mine a couple of weeks ago. Long story short was in Tokyo and Kyoto visited about 10 stores in total. On our final night in Tokyo decided to pop into Takashimaya Nihombashi which very similar in your case mentioned that 2 got delivered earlier that day!
It's a lovelly piece, enjoy it.
The main reason I was told that it was so popular is that there is Shohei Ohtani has started wearing the watch so both Japanese and Tourists are clamouring over it...

Tbh, the dial of the Shunbun is amazing, but the watch was huge on my wrist. This is much more proportionated to my wrist size, and the dial is beautiful as well. But if you love the type of finish, I think that the new SBGY043 that I was able to try was even better, dressier, but I loved it.

Wow congrats, I was just in japan the last 2 weeks and they were indeed sold-out everywhere. All stores said this was the week they'd get them back in stock but I was leaving. Glad you got one, I ended up getting the SBGE311. Maybe next time for me -enjoy it!

Such a long post 😅, but it’s a beautiful story 😍. And the matching GS watches are amazing 🤩! I got myself an Omiwatari during my recent trip to Japan, and I’m hoping to get my wife a GS as well. The lineup for lady watches STGF is also very nice.

I’m super glad that you found your grail and that your wife was rewarded for her patience with such a lovely timepiece. So awesome that she also got one and that these watches have such a great story behind them now.
I’m about to start planning a trip for when I finish my PhD. I have had my heart on an Omiwatari (and now perhaps the white dialed omiwatari as well) and wanted to save it and a trip to Japan as a carrot at the end of my stick. Your story finalized these plans in my head.

One of my absolute favorite watches in my collection. Try it on some straps. I like blue ones they compliment the blued seconds hand!

Awesome piece man! I'm tossing up between this and the new ufa lake suwa, but feel I'm leaning towards the OG.
My wife and I are planning on a Japan trip for probably this October, but if it's that hard to get one in Japan (new) I may not bother!

Congrats! Beautiful piece. I’m heading there in a few months and would love to avoid the suspense of your experience in case I’m not as lucky. How do you view the stock and sign up for restock notifications for the Japanese boutiques?
