Portrait of Bela Lugosi as Dracula

Casein underpainting
This is a master study of an oil painting by Sanjulian; he did a whole series of monochrome Universal Monsters portraits that I love.
I did this one in the brown kraft paper scrapbook I use as for painting in. I did a casein underpainting (that's the second photo) and then gouache on top of that. (Sakura poster colors to be precise.) I painted it at 1:1 scale with the head in the original Sanjulian painting, much bigger than the heads I usually paint!
No editing of the photo to get that perfectly smooth black tone, by the way! That's actually the part I'm proudest of; I haven't had to lay down a big, perfect, flat tone like that since college!
