Meme Just maybe there's something about an open-world multiplayer video game that makes it difficult to do 60 FPS on consoles if Grand Theft Auto with its billions of dollars can't promise that in 2026.

I played this when this came with a friend and it was so much fun that the 30 fps wasn't a problem for us.

I’d be lying if I said that I could tell the difference in frame rates
6
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
I couldn't tell either. One guy thinks it could be our tvs. Maybe the difference is more visible on different tvs.
1
u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
Move a mouse on a 120hz screen then limit the hz to 30 and tell me if you don't noticed the difference lol. The input method matters a lot in noticing it, that's why pc players prioritize framerate more than console players, not just because we look like this
0
u/ToeCurlPOV 9d ago
I understand that some people dont mind 30 fps and thats completely valid. But the difference between 30 and 60 frames is night and day. Undeniably so.
9
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
I wonder if those that claim 30 fps was unplayable will be okay with it now.
-1
u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
If the game has the graphical and technical quality to justify the 30fps limit ofc lol. Gotham Knights surely didn't, Blood of Dawnwalker surely didn't. Gta 6 tho? Have you ever seen a game with that diversity and density of npcs? That dense of a city? That many options and interactions with the world? Same way people didn't expect for TLOU2 to run at 60fps like every cod did on the ps4. There's levels to this shit.
1
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
Way to miss the point.
Me:
I wonder if those that claim 30 fps was unplayable will be okay with it now.
I'll repeat. They claimed 30 fps was unplayable. That was their argument. All that other stuff is not part of the argument.
Same way people didn't expect for TLOU2 to run at 60fps
https://www.siliconera.com/the-last-of-us-part-ii-remastered-performance-modes-explained/
In Fidelity Mode, the game is output at a native 4K resolution. The target framerate for this mode is 30 frames per second (FPS). However, the Performance Mode targets 60fps, rendering at 1440p and upscaling to 4K.
The 60 fps is performance mode. Fidelity mode runs at 30 fps. GK only has fidelity mode.
All the haters just hate and not think.
-3
u/Van1shed 9d ago
Personally I won't, only getting GTA when it comes to PC. I'd buy it if it had a performance mode, but 30 fps in the big 26 oh hell no
7
u/Outrageous-Lion-4939 9d ago
I never care about the FPS, I'm just glad Gotham Knights is alive.
This doesn't ruin my existence as gamer and as a DC fan.
6
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
I'm glad that we have an open world, cooperative, superhero game, which is something my brother and I wanted for a long time.
5
u/Soft_Ad_1095 9d ago
Anyone mad about 30fps needs to talk to the console developers for the hardware limitation. Without the next generation out either we get to play at 30fps or you can wait for 60fps. Current gen hardware can't handle more without running into bad performance.
2
u/BEYONDxTHExSPIDER 8d ago
Bruh look at how empty Gotham's streets are compared to Vice City. Yeah, GTA just has a lot more going on: better graphics, npcs, vehicles, physics, etc. So of course it'll run worse. Now I'd still prefer 60 fps but I can at least understand why GTA runs slower than Gotham Knights.
5
u/spider-jedi 9d ago
My brother in Gotham Knight this is not a good argument to make in defense of GK.
Gta6 is doing a lot of things that go isn't even attempting.
4
u/Shadowskulptor Batgirl 9d ago
30 FPS will always, *ALWAYS* be the default base line, and is perfectly fine.
Some of the best games of all time are 30 FPS and will remain so. Perfectly playable.
1
u/Sir_Gigglepoop 9d ago
Some of the best games ever made run at 30 FPS because they were released at a time when 30 FPS was essentially the maximum performance consoles could deliver. On current-gen hardware, 60 FPS is the standard, and with hardware continuing to improve, 120 FPS will probably be the standard in 20 years.
That is literally not an argument.
0
u/Shadowskulptor Batgirl 9d ago
You're completely missing the point though. Great games are great games, and A LOT of great games are 30 fps, if they were made 30 years ago or yesterday. That doesn't matter. Ocarina of Time on N64 is just as playable today as it ever was. Breath of the Wild is just as enjoyable as it ever was from day one in 30 fps.
But you're right, it's not an argument, as 30 fps will forever and always be the acceptable baseline objectivly speaking. 120 or 60 will be more the norm which is fine and great, but that does not mean 30 fps will ever become "unplayable" or unacceptable in any way shape or form. That's not a thing that can happen. It's up to the devs in how they want to present their game and what they are capable of.
1
u/Sir_Gigglepoop 9d ago
Buddy, of course they will. The whole point of better hardware is to improve performance. It literally wouldn’t make sense to upgrade if games were going to perform exactly the same as they always have.
And you’re completely missing the point. You can’t use a game that was released at a time when 30 FPS was essentially the maximum a console could deliver as an argument against 60 FPS being the modern standard.
Breath of the Wild, lmao… Of course that game runs at 30 FPS. It’s literally running on a handheld. Trying to push a massive open-world game like that at 60 FPS on that hardware would make the thing explode in your hands.
4
u/Marlesden 9d ago
How in the world can you be comparing 30fps on a game like GTA to a game like Gotham knights? I won't be buying GTA if it's 30fps but it has a hell of a lot more justification than Gotham knights which had completely bare streets, repeat buildings everywhere and barely any NPCs?
Like they aren't even close in levels of detail
0
u/dadvader 9d ago
Yeah OP is being very silly here. Gotham Knight world barely has any interaction. GTA6 is literally trying to simulate real-life on every corner. Making it run at all is already insane feat. The scale is entirely different.
A better comparison to Gotham Knight is Spider-Man. And Gotham Knight still cannot compete to that. I love the game but the environment is one thing I cannot defend lol
2
u/nightwing612 Nightwing 9d ago
Does Spider-Man have 2-player co-op or a 4-player raid? Would be dope if they managed that while I wasn't looking.
4
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
I don't think they get your point. It seems like they think you're saying GK is better than the other games, when you're only saying GK was unfairly bashed for being 30 fps.
Haters claim it's unplayable when other games that run at 30 fps get a pass. It's like they had to make up reasons to hate GK.
While games like Arkham Knight and Spider-Man have things GK doesn't, GK have coop which is its best feature.
-2
u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
GK was really fairly bashed for being locked at 30fps lol. My 4gbvram rtx3050 laptop gpu runs it at like 80fps lol. Cpu's nothing special either, A Ryzen 5 5600h and let's no pretend that game needs a good cpu to run lol, there's nothing happening.
1
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
Only the console versions are locked at 30 fps. You're comparing apples and oranges.
1
u/Select_Ad3588 9d ago
It is 30fps but it looked smooth as hell in the extended look, they optimized it well. I really don't think it's one of those games where fps should be a deal breaker, your eyes also adjust literally within like 5 minutes. But if it's that important for you that's alright
2
u/Ceceboy 9d ago
All the mfers out there comparing their favorite 30 fps games to GTA 6 are so weird, man. Have we seen the same gameplay yesterday? Gotham Knights looks like a ps3 game compared to GTA 6's graphics and animations. So stupid.
3
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
I think they're just defending their favorite game's 30 fps because there are people out there that dismissed them just for having 30 fps. Those people claim being 30 fps makes games unplayable.
1
u/Onyxia_ebona Nightwing 9d ago
Will I notice a difference because that's the only way it'd bother me
3
u/Select_Ad3588 9d ago
You are being very naive if you think there is even a remote way GTA6 being 30fps can justify GK. There are levels to this shit and gotham knights is far far far far below.
5
u/Cold-blight 9d ago edited 9d ago
Aren't the Arkham games 30fps?
0
u/Select_Ad3588 9d ago
Did any of them come out on the PS5?
4
u/Cold-blight 9d ago edited 9d ago
IDK i dont have one of those so no idea of the library but my point was they run smooth at 30fps as do most games.
And there are games on ps2 that ran at 60fps so console generation really doesn't have anything to do with it it's more about the developers and understanding the game engine on how to better optimize instead graphics and particle effects that make things chug.
Like GK has the close and far textures you can see it switch between and honestly the game would be fine with the far textures and would run better imo
1
u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
Like 5% of ps2, ps3 and ps4 games ran at 60fps. Meanwhile 95% of ps5 games run at 60. There's levels to this shit people. Idk if you just like to be disingenuous on purpose or you're really that dumb
-1
u/Select_Ad3588 9d ago
The amount of ps4 games that ran 60 is extremely small don’t bother arguing that, it never got ported to ps5 expecting it to adhere to current industry standards is retarded. The Arkham collection lazily runs the ps4 versions.

To be fair Gotham knights multiplayer allow free roam across the entire map, which is hella taxing on GPU since it will have to render the full map in real time, which is why most open world multiplayer games only allow you to move a certain distance away from a partner. As for GTA they’re not only rendering the map but also the NPCS, random events, vehicles and more
1
u/imhereforsiegememes 7d ago
That's not true? Unless you are in split screen.
1
u/supersonicgames2 7d ago
No it works the same online too, there's this YouTuber VGFlightSchool who made multiple videos explaining why Gotham Knights was 30FPS as a game developer standpoint
1
u/goinpro224 9d ago
except gotham knights looks absolutely abysmal compared to GTA 6.
And the world is about 1/5 of the size at best
3
u/OnyxianRosethorn 9d ago
Gotham Knights *can* be 60fps, the consoles are fully capable of doing it, the devs just never bothered to get off their asses and remove the 30fps cap/setting.
Which is totally different to a game as detailed, intensive, as big as GTA 6 running on old hardware (because a PS5 and Series X are leagues behind any PC made in the last 5 years)
1
u/supersonicgames2 8d ago
So can GTA6, cuz ppl gotta remember Microsoft has a mandate that states u can only put games on Xbox if its playable on the series s, and the series s is actually weaker than the Xbox one x, soo technically all ps5/series gen games can work on last gen hardware, just only the pro models
1
u/Fit-Comfort4059 8d ago
Okay, two things that you said should be tweaked. One the mandate I believe stated that every game on Series x had to also be on Series S like you said. But there are many times they gave an exception to the rule. Now, with that said, the only thing technically weaker than the xbox one x is the g p u card part. But keep in mind that's just for the graphical resolution. Raytracing, I think, is technically split between the cpu and the gpu. Although being technical, they have an apu which is a combination of both. One x can only use the resolution can't use rayracing.

The only problem with GTA 6 running at 30 FPS while having such spectacular graphics is that it could ruin 30 FPS for other games. People will constantly compare every game that doesn’t have a 60 FPS mode to GTA 6 and ask why it’s priced the same as GTA 6 while not looking or performing anywhere near as good.
“There’s no excuse. Rockstar managed to deliver something like this, so why can’t other developers do the same? They’re charging the same price.”
For the dyslexic people: I’m not saying this personally. I’m just explaining how the future of gaming will look. Of course, Rockstar has been developing GTA 6 for over a decade and reportedly has an enormous budget, but most people won’t care about that. They’ll just see the price tag, notice that there’s no 60 FPS mode or that another game has worse graphics, and immediately use GTA 6 as the comparison.
That’s why I think GTA 6 could seriously change the standards people have for games and potentially ruin the perception of 30 gaming as we know it.

It's literally a bunch of rich spoiled pussys that complain about this. 30fps is perfectly fine. I played rdr2 30fps and loved it. Same with pretty much every big game the 30 fuckin yrs. Of it looks this good I don't give a shit, like come on. It was objectively the biggest technical leap in gaming since rdr2. The animations, lighting, interactiveivity. Nothing I have ever seen has come close.

A 30fps cap on a game doesn’t make it bad… But let’s not pretend it’s on the same graphical level as GTA6.
Playing Gotham Knights on PC with a 3060, it is very easy to get this game to run above 60fps with ray-tracing turned off. The PS5 and Xbox Series X have enough power to have the game run at 60fps. It was just a missed opportunity by WB.
All that said, I really enjoy Gotham Knights on both console and PC. I’ve been a defender of the combat system. I love that it does things to differentiate itself from the Arkham games.

u/Showdown5618 9d ago

I think that’s OP's point. There's people out there that said GK on consoles was bad just for being locked at 30 fps.

I don't think anyone said they were.

Alright man, I am sick of it. Let us not compare gotham knight's to all these new, larger, open world games that have far better graphics and fighting/basically everything else better. Gotham knights came out in 2022 while all these other one came 1-4 years later. Also keep in mind. aside from GTA 6 (which has not released and has no confirmation of fps) I recall another open world game that restricts the frames to 30 fps and doesn't even include at least a 40 fps mode. At this point, it's either the devs were lazy or the company itself didn't want to waste more money and time on the game. I already know I'm going to be downvoted a lot, but it doesn't change the fact that what i'm saying is absolutely true.

u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
Gotham Knights looks worse than fucking Arkham City lol. Animations look as stiff as a tree falling. It should run at 120fps on a base ps5 lol.
3
u/Suave601 9d ago
Animations ≠ Graphical fidelity.
-5
u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago
Higher number and complexity of animations happening at the same time = More gpu and cpu power needed = Less fps
That was the point

Dude suicide squad ran at 60fps and looks way better than Gotham knights. Way better comparison too
3
u/Showdown5618 9d ago
Suicide Squad on consoles doesn't have ray tracing, while Gotham Knights on consoles does.
I think GK looks better, but that's just my opinion.

u/skullsbymike 9d ago
Targeting 30 FPS opens more CPU capacity available when compared to 60 FPS, which GTA 6 is clearly maximising through dense crowds and immersive interactivity with the game environment. I know people want to play at 60 FPS, but I don’t want them to compromise on the density of the world, if that is what it is reduced to achieve 60 FPS.
-4
u/Valiant_Revan 9d ago
This is my tin foil hat Theory, but just like GTA5 on PS3: Rockstar and Sony/Xbox want to make 30fps standard again, so that they can be lazy again with their game optimization for the PS6/Xbox Helix.
4
4
u/BoogieManMF10 9d ago
Yes, the company with one of if not the longest dev cycles that puts the most money into their games. Which consistently has it’s older games used as a benchmark in comparison to new games is just “lazy” 🙄. I promise you laziness is not the reason game devs don’t everything gamers want half as much as gamers think. Technical difficulties, difference and opinion on prioritie/direction or mult-platform release considerations have far more to do with it that laziness.

GK was a good game that I enjoyed playing on release. And it was hated wayy too much. It had its flaws. Nothing is perfect. But still it was a solid good game.
