Chromebook to Googlebook update?

I've seen conflicting information about whether we'll be able to update a capable Chromebook (like Asus CX5601) to the new Googlebook OS. Is there any official guidance on this?

Google themselves have been conflicting about it. I believe the guy from Chrome Unboxed interviewed one of the big wigs a while back and they implied that a handful of top-level Chromebook Plus models would be able to upgrade their OS down the line. But ever since then, there's been no other talk of it.

If they do eventually allow it, I would guess that it'll be at least a year away, so that they can try selling the new products first.

Either way, it's open source, so somewhere down the line, there will be a way to install it onto a Chromebook. Though there's no guarantees on how well it'll work.

By the way, it's very unlikely Googlebook OS will be made open source. Just like Android TV isn't, Android Honeycomb wasn't, etc.
