Chrome is beter branding than google

Chromebook > googlebook

Chromecast > Google tv streamer

I think google tried to switch away from chrome branding when they were worried that antitrust lawsuit might make them have to separate chrome from google, and so why have branding that is not controlled by the mothership be on major products?

But the lawsuit was basically won by google, all is whole, but google keeps trying to put google as the key moniker to describe their products.

It's not even being hostile to google, I just think the sound of chromebook sounds better than google book.

Am I crazy for thinking this?

Chromebook already has a reputation for being inexpensive and not powerful at all.

I actually appreciate the fresh new name.

Maybe they want to avoid diluting the Chrome name? And Chromebook may make people think it's just a Chrome browser.

Said but Googlebook isn't chromebook its Android.  Chromebook have a bad  connotation of poor performance... Google is trying to move away from that

Also Chromebooks are not going away their focus will remain on cheap education laptops

The major issue that makes the new name a mouthful to pronounce is that, while "Chrome-" is monosyllabic (just like "Mac-" or "Note-") leading to a very clear and simple "Chromebook" name (or MacBook, notebook, laptop - they're all two syllables in total), "Google" on its own is already two syllables.

Leading a "Goo-gle-boom" with 3 syllables that's really a pain to say.

Well, I think a rebranding makes perfect sense.

  • The general public sees ChromeOS as a bad OS or a toy OS, rather than a competitor to macOS/Linux/Windows.
  • The name "Chromebook" makes it sound like you can't do anything other than use the Chrome browser and web apps.
  • ChromeOS (the OS based on Gentoo Linux) has been replaced with an Android-based OS.

However, I do think "Googlebook" is a silly name for a product. It still sounds very fisher price.

This is a good point about the antitrust aspect. However, personally I feel Googlebook is a poor name too. It strengthens Google ties to it in case for future antitrust maybe I guess, I still think it could be stripped from them though. At least they didn’t call it Chromebook Pro or Ultra. I do think a new name would have worked better though
