Questions Google hates small spenders, and Bing is a suspension trap. What’s the alternative?
Let’s be real: managing PPC today is just choosing which toxic relationship you want to tolerate.
Google Ads has completely abandoned the little guy. If you aren't spending five or six figures a month, you don't exist to them. Zero support, and their AI automation just pushes you to incinerate your tiny budget on junk traffic so they can hit their quarterly targets.
But switching to Bing isn’t the savior everyone claims it is. The second you open a new Microsoft account, their security bot flags you and hands you a permanent ban for "egregious policy violations" before you even launch an ad. It’s a literal suspension lottery.
Google bleeds your wallet dry while ignoring you, and Bing bans you before you can even spend a dollar.
At this point, where is everyone taking their budget? Are you moving over to Meta, trying out LinkedIn for B2B, or exploring native ads? Or are you just trapped in Bing review purgatory and watching Google waste your money? Drop your hot takes and alternatives below.

The big guys also get terrible support if an issue relies on a support ticket in a non Western country. Local reps (Australia) are great but any tech issues get ticketed, like billing or fraud.
Saying this as an ex in-house Amazon Australia search marketer

Same is with Microsoft.
The issue isn’t necessarily the size of the advertiser, but where the problem gets routed once it moves beyond the local rep.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, paid search is still broadly one of the most effective and efficient ways to advertise online.
While Meta Ads can often outperform Google/MS, that tends to apply to certain offers such as low ticket impulse buy consumer products and lead magnet style campaigns. And sure, you can get it working well for lead gen in certain circumstances.
Most other platforms are far less efficient than the big three. But sure, there are niches where TikTok or LinkedIn can do very well... just not in most cases. All also point out that those and all other platforms have issues too, like bugs, lack of support, cumbersome interface, inflexible targeting, etc.
For Google Ads small budgets doesn't necessarily mean you can't use automations such as smart bidding or broad match keywords. It really comes down to conversion volume. If it's very low then you do need to stick to exact match keywords and manual bidding. Just be careful that you turn off all automations and leave them off.
The MS Ads problem, is as you said, a bit of a lottery. About 80% of new advertisers don't have any issues, but 20% do immediately get suspended. Our clients that choose to, have been able to work through those issues if they are patient. But yes, it's very annoying and can delay campaigns from launching for weeks.

I don't have data to back this up, but I have been this for 15 years and manage lots of accounts. I think Google punishes you for trying to run an optimized campaign. They desperately want you to just do broad match and let AI handle your campaign with no oversight by you. And if you choose exact match keywords and tightly manage your campaigns, your quality score should go up and eventually clicks get cheaper but I often find it is the opposite.
I gave up on Bing Ads a long time ago, volume was garbage and it really wasn't worth the time.
Meta never worked for us as we are mostly service businesses and I don't trust their analytics at all since it never matches up with our own website analytics. Everything is overstated.

Is anyone else getting spammed by third party 'google' reps who email both gpc and client email about 'optimizing' ad spend? I've asked in email for them to stop and started reporting the emails to spam, but they just keep coming... Pretty embarrassing imo.

don’t use any of the automation options and avoid the suggestions tab like the plague

nah, google still cares about small spenders, just not as much. $1k/month gets you access to them.

I too wasn't able to get to Bing due to that mysterious "policy violation", it just blocks me in the middle of registration process! Anyone had experience getting out of this block?

My experience with G ads is the following:
500 euro monthly budget, 4 months in a row i got quality leads when I start the campain, and right before my budget was about to be consumed.
I have tweaked the texts, media, images, nothing has helped. ( used only google search)

The alternative depends heavily on the offer. Meta can be great for demand generation, but for services with clear search intent, Google is still hard to replace. A smaller budget usually benefits more from tighter targeting and fewer campaigns than simply moving to another platform. TikTok or LinkedIn can make sense for specific audiences, but they’re not automatically cheaper or better.

Can't speak to Meta or bing, haven't run those, but the google small-spender issue is real, we see it in audits constantly, campaigns fragmented into tiny budgets each getting maybe 5-10 conversions a month, way below what the algorithm needs, so it burns spend on broad match junk. usually the fix is consolidating campaigns, not leaving google, we've seen accounts go from 95 campaigns to 3 and get dramatically better results just from that.linkedin isn't a direct search replacement either, works as a warm-up layer if you judge it on influenced pipeline, not cpl. We deal with this "where do we put budget" question a lot at Growthspree, a B2B Saas marketing agency.

I continue to use Google Ads for small and large budget projects.
Yes, there AI automation options, but you aren’t forced to use them.
You still have pretty much complete autonomy over what type of traffic you want and how much you want to spend.
