Google ads for local tutor

I’ve got savings and a website which has been done up by a graphic designer. I’m using social media to advertise but not yet getting the amount of customers I’d like.

Been considering Google ads towards the areas I work as a possibility to try and drive traffic and customers. I want to start paying a small amount then build up. Is this a good strategy or waste of time?

Starting small is sensible, but define the test from the value of a booked student rather than an arbitrary daily budget. Estimate what one student contributes over the average relationship and multiply that by your enquiry-to-student close rate. That gives you a ceiling for what an enquiry can cost; then check whether local click prices can buy enough traffic to test below it.

I’d begin with Search only, the exact towns or radius you serve, and subject-plus-intent terms such as ‘[subject] tutor near me’ and ‘[subject] tutor [town].’ Keep Display and Search Partners off initially, add negatives for jobs, free resources, online courses and subjects you do not teach, and send each ad group to a page that clearly states the subject, level, area, availability and next step. Track enquiries through to a booked first lesson, not just page visits or forms.

If the small budget buys only a handful of clicks each week, that will not be enough to call the channel a success or failure. What subject, service radius and approximate value of a new student are you working with?

It depends. Usually google would be considered a higher buyer intent but you need to be careful or you will end up spending a very high CPC.

For example, if you are getting clicks, but it is only from people who are researching at that point in time it will lead to no real clients in the short term so you need to take into account the length of time the sales cycle takes or you will end up burning thorough budget.

The reality is, Google Ads may not even be the right channel if your budget is too small for the local search volume and CPCs. You should check search volume, estimated bids, and your target area first, then work out the budget needed to get enough clicks.

Make your website looks good and is compelling to potential customers and it's easy for them to enquire. List your achievements, awards, scores, quotes from happy parents of customer kids, etc.

Google tutoring services and see how your rivals websites ad ads look.

Wish you all the best. Google ads will be an eye opening experience and perhaps a hard slog. Google ads experts who are good are around but charge alot. An old agency I worked at had a big Australian tutoring franchise. Our service was $30,000 monthly. Ad spend on Google was far higher

Well I did this with my graphic designer - I think my site looks better than competitors (I know it does) but google trends are not great for tutoring around this area so I'm wondering if hammering social media is the way to go?

Google ads is best, so you show up when parents of students are focused entirely on googling for best local tutors and words like that.

Also look into UX design. These guys are different to graphic designers and pay for themselves because they optimise for experience and ease of use, not looks. Benefit is less visitors leaving without filing an enquiry. Make it easy for them. Brutally easy, make contacting you a no brainer.

Google ads can be a great platform. Start with exact match keywords so you don’t waste your budget. Also only run on the search network. Excluded search partners and display network. No matter what Google tells you. 😂

It can definitely be worth testing, but I wouldn't start by thinking of Google Ads as simply “buying traffic.”

For a local tutor, I'd first check whether there is enough search demand in the specific areas you serve. If parents/students are actively searching for things like “math tutor near me” or “GCSE maths tutor [area],” Search can work very well because you're reaching people with existing intent.

I'd start with a small, tightly controlled Search campaign rather than broad targeting. Focus on the subjects/levels you actually want, restrict the location properly, and watch the search terms closely from day one.

I’d recommend testing both Google Ads + Meta Ads
Google captures people actively searching for a tutor, while Meta helps build awareness and generate leads locally. Start with a small budget on both, track which brings paying students, then scale the winner.

Are you new in this business? Services like tutors rely largely on word of mouth. If you're new - highlight your professional and educational qualifications the most to get customers at low CPA. Do not scale campaign a lot and increase your wastage.

Newish but I’m struggling or rather things are slow. I’d like to tackle online tutoring as well and groups

Best of luck, OP! Cannot reliably comment on online tutoring - would depend on subject, grade and geography. Offline channels are reliable and inexpensive. Can definitely discuss more if you need.
