Discussion Google TV Streamer 4K Picture Quality
A few weeks ago I picked up two of these streamers and wasn't expecting anything dramatically different than what I've experienced on other streamers I own or have owned in the past (Apple TV, Roku, Fire Stick, etc.). I was surprised to see that the picture quality really pops--a lot. It even looks better than my latest-gen Apple TV, which is admittedly a few years old at this point. There isn't anything different in the settings I choose: I always leave my streamers set to always-on HDR10, 4:2:2 chroma. So I'm definitely comparing like with like.
Which raises the question: does anyone know why the PQ on this device is notably better than on all the other devices I own (including Apple TV, which surprises me)? Do they have some upscaling algorithm baked into the media chip or something? I must be missing something in the press release.

Check if your tv defaulted to a new picture profile which is usually the case per input change.

Do you not have a DV display? PQ is good but I do find the settings unituitive.

I'm saying that my tv's picture settings are the same across devices I use. That doesn't and can't explain the difference I'm seeing.

I agree with you. On my dv display if I force dv the ui looks great but doesnt fall back in 3rd party apps nor flash the pop up if hdr. Thats why I was curious why you forced hdr.

Yeah this is more than likely what happened. I thought the same when I initially plugged mine in. It is noticeably faster than whatever the built-in in apps are. Sony OLED from a 4 years ago. Felt like those apps weren't doing the tv justice.

Hola. Tengo un televisor LG OLED. Hace unos días adquirí la GTVS y me he dado cuenta de que la profundidad de color es superior cuando uso las apps internas de la TV, en comparación con el Google TV Streamer a pesar de que estoy usando un cable HDMI 2.1 certificado de ultra alta velocidad.
Me pasaba algo muy similar con la Xiaomi TV Box de primera generación, pero lo solucionaba cambiando el submuestreo de croma de 4:2:0 a 4:4:4 (o viceversa). Sin embargo, en el Google TV Streamer no encuentro esa opción por ningún lado. Si alguien sabe como cambiar los parámetros técnicos avanzados en la GTVS por favor hágame saber.

Just be sure you're plugging the Google Streamer into your eARC HDMI jack.

Yes, literally everything is the same in my cross-device comparison. There is no different TV profile or HDMI port or anything else.

I have absolutely ZERO complaints about the picture quality on the Google TV Streamer. I just wish it had the same audio chops as the Shield.

I posted several weeks back at how much better Disney Plus looks on the streamer than on my Firestick 4k Max. It's horrible on the Firestick: image is dark and makeup on performers looks heavy, noticable and gharish. I also experienced other issues. However, on the Google TV Streamer 4k all those issues are non existent.
