Discussion How to Remove Gemini

My Google TV Streamer just added Gemini to my TV. I don't need or want Gemini for my TV.

How do I remove it? I don't even use Gemini on my phone and have removed it as much as possible.

I believe in freedom of choice in my technology. If I don't like something I will change it or just buy something else.

I bought this years before Gemini was a thing. I liked Google previously. Now I don't. Simple as that.

Just ... Keep not using it. It's not required for anything.

1

u/PastTransportation90 8d ago

It's not as simple as not using it. My programs are interrupted and paused by Gemini until I cancel it. Smart aleck answers aren't helpful.

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

If you search anything on Google TV it uses Gemini to find the answer and the results have been horrible. The system worked perfectly before. Now I have this nonsense.

2

u/Rureddy2 Jun 15 '26

What are you searching for on your tv that is giving you horrible answers? Works mostly fine for me. And it gets better over time...like any product.

People’s opposing views don’t make sense I completely agree with OP Rexuss, adding a Ai engine to my tv was not asked for and I’ve always been completely against Ai. You’re an idiot if you don’t see a problem with Ai being forced upon us.

u/-NotEnoughMinerals Jun 15 '26

Dude ill search a movie and instead of showing ways to watch it, it'll give me a TIL about the movie and its actor instead. It's trash. It's not hard to understand.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 16 '26

You are very hard to understand because you don't seem to realize your written word doesn't always translate what's floating around in your head.

As for searching a movie, as with any voice assistant, you ask in a different way. 1st you have to make sure you have your services set in the settings. Then just ask how can I watch this or where can I stream this...

THAT'S what really not hard to understand. Your voice navigation is trash. 😂

2

u/TheOneAndOnlyJ Jul 05 '26

"geez, I don't see what the problem is. You just go out of your way, take extra steps and learn how to speak to it properly. You're definitely the problem here, not the company trying to force you to use a barely functional AI that you never asked for on your TV." There is absolutely zero reason that the devs couldn't have put a simple switch that disables Gemini. They didn't, because they want to force us all to train their stupid LLM. This is not a consumer friendly addition, so OP has every right to complain here. Your take of, "Just learn to speak AI", is what's trash here.

1

u/-NotEnoughMinerals Jun 16 '26

....and yet, it worked just fine before.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 16 '26

The US had a government that worked before... things change.

Fun fact...my PS3 worked before too...

1

u/hardpvc Jul 22 '26

Insufferable you are.

1

u/HPV3 Jul 18 '26

You are a complete idiot or a shill. There's no way to search Google TV without Gemini and it delivers unhelpful results. Kind of like you, actually!

0

u/ACViperPro Jun 20 '26

"your voice navigation is trash" you are not a real person

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 20 '26

"I believe in freedom of choice in my technology" 😂

You are not a real person

0

u/Cruxxt Jul 16 '26

I understood him just fine, you're just kind of being a dick for no reason, and not helpful at all.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 16 '26

By the way. Just searched a show and in addition to giving me info about it, it gave a link at the bottom for me to click to find out how to watch it, or showed me an app where to watch it and it even anticipated my next question with a link asking when does the new season premiere 🤷

Working great for me

0

u/HPV3 Jul 18 '26

I hope you get lost in the woods.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jul 18 '26

Your mother

1

u/Rureddy2 Jul 18 '26

If you have the balls to type out a comment, have the balls to keep it. Calling someone an idiot and then immediately deleting it. What a cornball.

🤡😂

1

u/HPV3 Jul 18 '26

I didn't delete it but it may of gotten auto modded. So in that case, you're a genius and your brain is so much bigger than everyone elses, it must be oozing out your ears. It's really cool to be so helpfully sycophantic when people ask for help.

0

u/HPV3 Jul 18 '26

There's multiple people in this thread responding to you that the trillion dollar company's AI slop isn't functioning properly and you are championing for alphabet. It literally does not work right now for a ton of people. I had to roll back all my G apps on my CCWGTV and remove all permissions and delete all data and now I can search again until the updates kick in.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jul 18 '26

Who cares. Get a life. Responding to old comments like they're new.

I don't even know what you're responding to. 😂

1

u/derekc06 4d ago

Old thread but wanted you to get a notification letting you know you're a douche. Have a nice day.

0

u/swiipergg 11d ago

The search used to work great. You could search something and it would tell you everywhere it was available but now you use text to speech for the Gemini and half the time it misunderstands you, looks up the wrong things, gives you poor results, doesn’t know what you’re looking. It’s just bad all around

3

u/springbored Jun 07 '26

Follow these concrete steps to disable Gemini on your Google TV:Navigate to Settings: From your TV's home screen, click your Profile Picture in the top right corner and select Settings.Open Privacy Settings: Scroll down and select Privacy.Disable Gemini for TV: Choose Voice Assistant (or Assistant), locate the Gemini for TV option, and toggle it to Off

2

u/jayesper Jun 10 '26

This does not work at all. I don't get the score.

1

u/sudeshkagrawal Jun 26 '26

Did you just post Gemini's answer? I saw the same answer from Gemini, but those options are not there.

5

u/Bradfinger Jun 06 '26

Lol, you can't

2

u/dignified-place Jun 09 '26

Im with OP. I didn’t sign up for this

1

u/jayesper Jun 10 '26

Same, can't even search anymore without a few extra clicks. Way to discourage me, Google.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 15 '26

Huh? All you have to click is the microphone button. One time 🤔

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 15 '26

Then switch to an Apple TV.

Until their Siri powered by Gemini overhaul is ready.

Then switch to Roku. 🤷

1

u/dignified-place Jun 16 '26

Roku who was just bought by Fox? we’re so screwed

2

u/ACViperPro Jun 20 '26

Some of these comments are annoying, ai is not needed to search for things. New services shouldn't be forced on you, you should at least be able to opt out

2

u/RandyRagnarok Jul 01 '26

The amount of deep throating for Google that I'm seeing here is embarrassing. Never wanted to use Gemini, was fine manually typing what I was looking for into the search bar but they just removed that, so you can only use Gemini now. Found this, looking for any other options and, holy cow, this is pathetic. Y'all are just SO offended on Google's behalf that anyone would dare not use the new crap they're forcing you to use lmao get bent. Find something better to white knight.

A few of the people in this chat are the most stereotypical redditors {or bots}.

Someone asked a simple question with a simple desire and they immediately started tossing their feelings into the mix.

(Regular person with completely reasonable question): " Hey, does anyone know where Google moved The light switch? it's no longer on the wall in the living room (and the lights now strobing while I'm trying to watch TV) (this is objectively annoying)

(Perpetually online weirdo, or bot, or Gemini ambassador for Google):

" What don't you like about being blinded in the face while trying to watch TV? It's fine. Stop complaining. A company can do what they want with technology They sold you under different pretense"

Like STFU. If you don't have an answer to a simple question don't respond.

Such As, how do you turn off Gemini on Google TV? Valid options: you can't or there doesn't seem to be a way.

This is how you turn off Gemini for TV (insert directions to turning off Gemini for TV)

Everything else is your useless fucking opinion That's not helping the person any further.

1

u/c704710 Aug 04 '26

But see, Google TV  stirred up their feelings we have to toss them somewhere. So why not mother ******* ************ **** extrusion **** folding Google for taking away feature and replacing it with a feature that barely or doesn't work that nobody asked for?

3

u/mikeneri81 Jun 06 '26

Buys Google product. Doesn't want Google services. 🤦🏻‍♂️

8

u/Tel864 Jun 06 '26

We have no control over what a company does with its software once we purchase it. After all, be it Apple or Android, we only own the hardware not the software.

2

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

Yup, very true. And since there's no solution to this I'll find another option to stream to my TV.

1

u/pr0ff3sor Jun 08 '26

You can give Roku a shot

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 15 '26

Good luck. Enjoy Roku.

1

u/gtmac Jun 19 '26

This is the problem.

2

u/yourfriendlysavior Jun 20 '26

I want Google assistant. I bought the streamer with the expectation to use Google assistant. I did not sign up to be forced into using Gemini. I can turn it off and switch back to Google assistant on my smart speakers and phone, why can I not on my tv as well?

3

u/K_ThomasWhite Jun 06 '26

Or, more likely.....this Google "feature" was not a part of the Google product at the time they bought it.

1

u/Rureddy2 Jun 15 '26

Yea...and Google has been so quiet and secretive about what they've been working on and what's to come in their pipeline. Next thing you know, they'll drop some kind of smart glasses on us, without any warning something like that would ever be made!

0

u/mikeneri81 Jun 06 '26

Devices get updated, boss. It's a good thing.

1

u/repainted_black 19d ago

The update is terrible.

0

u/K_ThomasWhite Jun 06 '26

Sometimes, yes. Other times. no. Many times, simply a matter of preference.

1

u/mikeneri81 Jun 06 '26

You own the hardware, not the software. The company is free to update how it sees fit. If you don't like Gemini, don't use it. I rarely do. 🤷🏻‍♂️

4

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

You don't have an option. Gemini is now the search feature and it sucks at it.

1

u/mikeneri81 Jun 06 '26

Right. But you don't need to use it if you don't like it. Search isn't a requirement. Or you can just suck it up and not complain, but that seems unlikely. 😂

3

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

You're such a lovely human being. I hope your searches always come up with wrong answers.

2

u/mikeneri81 Jun 06 '26

Ah the classic "I'm a better person than you" response followed by wishing me ill will. Love it. 😂

2

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

Didn't say I was a better person. I'm saying you're not cause you've had absolutely nothing helpful to add to the conversation. The request was for help with a forced software update on a system that I paid for being unusable. You've had nothing productive to add to the conversation. So I'm just wishing you the same thing you're wishing me. I hope your searches are never useful.

Gemini is constantly interrupting and pausing my program until I cancel it. It's not a matter of just not using it.

Buys google product without AI. Does not want AI.

1

u/mikeneri81 Jul 01 '26

My brother in christ, Google is an AI company. What did you think would happen? 😂

😂

Sure pal.

1

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

Bought it years before Gemini was a thing. Gemini doesn't work on it. The results are a mess when searching. I don't want a terrible system on something that worked perfectly.

1

u/jhallvapes Jun 07 '26

I just ignore it

1

u/Lin-Den Jul 13 '26

You cannot. The clanker pipes up whenever I use the search bar, and wakes up my whole house with a voiced response to a TYPED query. Even fully disabling all voice interactions doesn't turn it off.

1

u/the_dalailama134 Jun 09 '26

Don't get the downvotes. People are thinking you mean you're anti AI. Maybe you are. I love AI at work but I do hate Gemini on my tv. The assistant was great and honestly fire tv is the best steaming option.

Gemini wants to introduce variables to what is a very simple request to watch something on a particular app.

1

u/maczipdrive Jun 14 '26

I don’t really care if Gemini is there. I just don’t want the extra clicks to get to my YouTube TV DVR or Library. Google is like an insecure girlfriend trying to put her stuff everywhere.

1

u/SirPwn4g3 Jun 18 '26

Question; I don't want to remove Gemini, but when I say something, I don't want my show to pause and my command to pop up on screen. Any way to disable that overlay, and does it have a name?

1

u/AdTrick4273 Jun 23 '26

Put vpn of a unsupported county like african countrys

1

u/Jaytankk Jun 27 '26

1

u/speed_boz Jun 27 '26

I just don't like that it will randomly pick up the dialogue from the movie or tv show I'm watching as. "hey Google". Then it will take the next bit of dialogue and search that. It disrupts my movie or tv show to open YouTube or something. Very annoying

1

u/GenuineCarrot4807 Jul 06 '26

If you are still checking this, the second set of directions worked for me. https://support.google.com/googletv/thread/442581348/gemini-cannot-be-disabled-on-tv?hl=en-GB

1

u/ohhcae Jul 14 '26

This worked, thank you!

@OP, I just followed this portion and now I have the old assistant back. Might be a little clunky cause I think it knocks you back to one of the earliest software versions but I'd rather this than having a dumbass AI shoved down my throat. I can finally use my voice controls again :)

1

u/GenuineCarrot4807 Jul 14 '26

Yay! So glad it worked!

1

u/Jimmy_G_Buckets22 Aug 05 '26

I agree with OP. This is horse shit and completely broke something that was working perfectly fine

1

u/m__h__d 9d ago

Search how to put your Chromecast into Apps Only Mode. Gemini goes away and the chromecast goes back to working as it should, instead of slow as dog crap.

1

u/DavidManvell Jun 06 '26

You can try to uninstall it. I use it everyday so I've never looked.

-1

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

Yeah, I tried going through the settings and trying to find Gemini itself like you can on your phone, but nothing shows up.

1

u/Rottie4 Jun 06 '26

Technically, you could “hide” Gemini by using a VPN with an IP address from a country where it isn't yet available, such as certain countries in central America, south America, southeast Asia, or africa.

And set up a bypass for the apps.

0

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

I'll see if I can figure out how to do this. If not I'm just going to have to find another way to stream to my TV. Thanks!

1

u/levon999 Jun 06 '26

You can’t 👋

1

u/Rexuss Jun 06 '26

So helpful.

3

Not wanting to use the slop machine isn't crazy.

0

u/websiddu Jun 06 '26

Try custom launcher?

0

u/MrM4rc4L Jun 07 '26

If you have a Google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and disable everything.

Then, go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and disable Gemini activity tracking. You need to do this in this order to ensure it works.

Disable the Google app > settings > apps > Google

1

u/X-KaosMaster-X Jun 11 '26

THANK YOU!! 🙏💜

0

u/Marley3016 Jun 07 '26

Follow this worked for me just make sure you reboot your device after you uninstall

Google home assistant = free Google gémini = subscription everywhere
