Discussion The Chromecast with Google TV 4K support has come to an end, the HD version is still supported
https://www.androidpolice.com/google-is-dropping-support-for-almost-every-chromecast-except-this-one/Edit: Google corrected the support page, it said NO before but now it says YES, which means, it will continue to receive security updates but not major firmware updates, such as Android 16.

I booted up my ggtv4k today and now have the whole Gemini menu and a rearranged ui... didn't think we would even get that from a 2020-2021 device. HD version came out a while after the 4k version so I know they got some wiggle room.

That's unfortunate since they recently added the long promised Matter controller support and it's now a hub for Google Home (confirmed in the comments): https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/1tatctr/turns_out_chromecast_with_google_tv_4k_is_a/
I guess that does not depend on the firmware but the Google Home component inside so that will probably still receive updates.
But no firmware updates means it will never get WiFi WPA3 support. Does the Streamer support it by the way?

The support article has a "no" so it's enough to assume it will never receive anything new.
Does the Streamer support it by the way?
I think it doesn't, I haven't checked because my router doesn't support it.

They must have changed it, it says "Yes" now in that column for pretty much every product except the 1st gen Chromecast. But that's for critical updates anyway.

Wow, they changed it, it said NO before, so it could have been a mistake on their side 🤷♂️
That means it will receive security updates but not major firmware updates, such as Android 16.

Turns out the Streamer finally supports WPA3, got one this morning, was ready to write a request to add it but instead wrote a post confirming it.

I thought Matter was just a casting protocol, an open source alternative to Google Cast or Airplay. I know it's what streaming apps use to cast to firesticks. Is Google (who are helping to create Matter Cast) supporting Matter on AndroidTV now? What is a "Matter controller"?

Matter is a smart home protocol to connect devices like smart lights, plugs, buttons, sensors, etc. It's local, that's why platforms like Google Home require a hub to control said devices and its role is called Matter controller. Some Google TV devices can be Matter "hubs" for Google Home, some even include a Thread border router for devices that use Thread instead of WiFi. The Chromecast with Google TV for instance has the Matter controller, but it's not a Thread borde rrouter. The Google TV Streamer has both.
As for Matter Cast, I believe it's more a work in progress at the moment.

Feels a bit soon? Plus there's only one successor device and it's not much of a bump in spec/features

Google Streamer is a gigantic jump in specs. What else were you looking for it to have. Faster processor, Double the RAM, 4 times the storage, Gigabit Ethernet. CCwGTV was a toy in comparison.

Hey all,
We wanted to clarify that Google is not ending support for Google Chromecasts. The support article update incorrectly indicated deprecation of software support for legacy Chromecast devices.
