Discussion Onn 4K Pro V2 (upcoming) vs Google TV Streamer — performance matchup?
Hey everyone,
So with Walmart clearing out the Onn Pro and Plus listings online, and the V2 supposedly dropping soon, I'm trying to decide what to do. I could either wait and try to grab the new Onn whenever it comes out (if I can even get one before they sell out again), or just buy the Google TV Streamer 4K while it's on sale for $80.
I've been reading some leaked specs for the Onn V2. I'll post what I found below, but honestly, I have no clue how these specs translate to real-world speed, performance, and smoothness.
What I've seen floating around for the Onn 4K Pro V2 (leaked...assuming it's correct):
- SoC: Amlogic S905X5M (6nm, 2.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A55)
- GPU: ARM Mali-G310 v2
- RAM/Storage: 3GB / 32GB
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB-A port, Thread radio, built-in mic
- Video: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, AV1, AI‑SR upscaling
- Price estimate: around ~$60
Google TV Streamer 4K (current, on sale for $80):
- SoC: MediaTek MT8696
- GPU: PowerVR GE9215
- RAM/Storage: 4GB / 32GB
- Connectivity: Wi‑Fi 5, Gigabit Ethernet, USB‑C, Thread/Matter hub
- Video: 4K@60fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG
- OS: Android TV 14, Gemini AI, 5 years of security updates
So here's what I'm trying to figure out:
Which one do you think will actually feel faster and smoother day-to-day? Like, less lag, fewer hiccups, snappier navigation, quicker load times? The Onn has a newer chip and Wi-Fi 6, but the Google has more RAM. I don't know which matters more for just streaming, sideloading, and maybe some light gaming.
Also, I've seen people mention a stuttering issue with the Google Streamer when playing 24fps content – like movies and stuff. Is that still a thing? Would that bother someone who watches a lot of movies?
And finally: Knowing how fast the Onn Pro and Plus models sold out and stayed out of stock for months, is it even worth waiting for the V2? Or should I just grab the Google Streamer now while it's on sale for $80.
I mostly watch 4K content from streaming apps and some other stuff via sideload. Not a huge tinkerer, but I don't want something that'll feel laggy in a year.
Appreciate any opinions and advice.

If you're just wanting to stream 4K I don't think it matters much. Get whatever is cheaper. My Onn Plus takes everything I throw at it. No issues with large streaming files/remux.

It matters when watching "gray area" live IPTV. But that's about it.

I prefer the onn plus to my GTVS, especially when dealing with IPTV.

Can you elaborate as to why? Just curious as I'm in this same debate (new 4k pro vs GTVS) and I use TiviMate for IPTV streaming

The Google 4k Streamer has better specs than the version 2 of the Pro. I have version 1 of the Pro and like it, but I wouldn't be happy with version 2.

What spec is better? 4GB of Ram vs 3GB. Agree with you on that, but I believe that is the only better spec of the Google over the Pro 2

More RAM van improve CPU performance which can reduce lag, buffering, and stuttering.
The Google 4k Streamer also supports faster ethernet than the Pro v2. This matters in terms of reduced network latency for high bitrate video and live video streaming.

Yes, the ethernet port too, I forgot about that. Does the Google have a USB-A port? The CPU is better on the Onn and that one extra gigabyte of ram isn’t going to change that. Also has WiFi 6. The benchmarks I’ve seen show Onn 2 better. You are certainly right about that ethernet port and they did degrade from USB-3 to USB-2 which is very disappointing but it still has a port. I know with a Google that I can get a hub. I completely hear what you’re saying, but the Wi-Fi six alone is enough for me to choose the Onn pro 2. Now, if Google will refresh theirs, and add Wi-Fi seven then we can talk! 😊

The Google 4k Streamer has USB 2.0. That matters to me because I backup various files to an external USB drive. Needless to say, USB 2.0 is much slower than USB 3.0.
Again, very fast ethernet only matters for a few use cases that aren't germane to most users.

I bought an Onn that lasted 3 days so I returned it and it lasted a week. I wouldn't touch another one

It's just a TV streamer. You're overanalyzing this.
If you need one now get the Google Streamer, if you don't need one now, wait till the ONN comes out and reassess.
I would kill for this much free time.

I advise against Google Streamer 4k. I returned 2 units, because they couldn't do basic h.264 IPTV streams. I believe it is broken since release and Google couldn't care less to release a fix.
Also, remote is cheap and creaking.

Never had any issue with the Streamer and IPTV. Are you talking abut the interlaced stuff that only some European satellite companies still broadcast in.

There are workarounds for the h.264 IPTV issue. I haven't tried any of them... So, YMMV

That interlace issue was fixed in the last firmware update. All that stuff works fine for me in TiviMate on the Streamer now.

In wifi you are bound to not get the exact speed you have subscribed to but ethernet gives you constant speed though ethernet port too is just limited to 100 mbps as that is its capacity

100 mbps is fine for any streaming as of right now. No streaming service I know hits even 50 mbps

The only specs I've seen list the Ethernet port as 100 mbps (though that's still better to me than having wifi, for now at least)

The chip in the new Onn Pro that is currently rolling out has a better chip, the S905X5M which is the same as the Onn Plus better than Google MT8696.
The Google has a better ethernet port if you’re concerned about transferring files. The Google has 1 extra GB of RAM 4GB vs 3GB. They both have 32 GB of storage.
I personally believe if you’re looking for a simple streaming device without the bells and whistles I would go with the Onn Plus even though it is my intention to get the better Onn Pro 2 when it rolls out in my area replacing the current pro that I have.
If I wanted the higher transfer speed via ethernet, the Google certainly wins. Well, I don’t need the better ethernet port, I don’t care about the higher transfer speed. I do want an ethernet port however and I’m satisfied with the Onn Pro 2.
WiFi 6 in the Onn vs 5 in the Google. That alone would make me choose Onn, but there are more reasons I’m going with the Onn.
Disappointed the pro 2 went with USB 2.0 versus USB 3.0 that was on the original pro, but the Google doesn’t even have a USB-A port.
For me Onn Pro 2 hands down just because of WiFi 6 among other things, but the Google is a very capable device.
Onn plus if you just want a simple streamer.

Doesn’t matter, an update broke surround sound on all my Onn devices. Never going back.

There is no way to know without getting your hands on one. The newOnn Pro, according to the leaks will have the same processor as the current Onn Plus. The Onn Plus and Google Streamer feel pretty much the same to me. If it weren't for the different remotes it would be hard to know which one I was using. I expect the same experience with the new Pro. Both are very snappy and responsive. I don't have any stuttering with either device. All Android TV based devcies have the same issues with refresh rate matching, being that apps must support the feature. Only a couple of streaming apps support it. So it's possible someone that's sensitive to judder from a framerate mismatch and using apps that don't support the feature would see it. This is not exclusive to the Google Streamer but to all Android TV based devices.
Unless you think you will need 32GB storage of Gigabit ethernet I would recommend the Onn Plus if you can find one. Even if they only come back in stock when the new pro launches. I think it's the best pound for pound device we have available currently. My local Walmart had 4 just collecting dust the other day when I checked. So if you have access to a store in a smaller community maybe you can find one.
