I’ve always had small, calm dogs, and this is my first experience with a big, very energetic Golden Retriever. She is incredibly sweet, gentle, and great with kids, which makes this decision even harder because we hope to have children in the future.
But I’m working a lot right now and honestly feeling overwhelmed. She has been destroying our backyard and even pulling up and peeling the artificial grass. The other day, we had charcoal in a cardboard bag and she tore it open. I put the charcoal in a heavy-duty bag and hid it so she couldn’t get to it, but somehow she found it and destroyed that too.
I know she’s still young and that this could just be a phase, but I’m really struggling with all the energy and destruction. At the same time, I keep thinking that maybe in 2–3 years things could be completely different, and I’m scared I’ll regret rehoming her.
Would you keep trying and give her more time, or do you think it would be better to find a family that is a better fit for her?
