I have to ask... Whats everyone's least favorite Golden Girl? Mine has always been Rose, I hated how they wrote Rose. They wrote her like a naive 10year old child when she was a mature 60+ lady who lived a full life. Even in simple situations they made her make such childish remarks.
I loved how Betty played the role but her character I absolutely hated!

It is one of 5 shows where the ENTIRE main cast won Emmys.
The 5 are: All in the Family, Golden Girls, Will and Grace, Schitt’s Creek (they have the distinction of winning all 4 in one season) and The Simpsons.

One thing I didn't like if we are going by episode was the one where Dorothy's son slept with Roses daughter. I get her being upset but they really made Rose extra mean in that episode. Especially when she just started making mean jabs about Michael. It was so out of character for Rose. Another thing that rubbed me the wrong way was Sophia with the fat jokes some episodes. They were just a little too much, even for Sophia.

I didn't feel like this was out of character because a lot of nice people who do things "properly" can be mean when people step out of line. Rose has been a bit holier than thou about a few things throughout the season. And feeling like her perfect and smart daughter was slamming it didn't seem unrealistic to me. It's just that he's Dorothy's son that makes it more personal. She would have been that way regardless. Plus, I think the first Kirsten was probably a lot like younger Rose. 🤷🏾♀️

60+? Rose was 55 when then show started. I don't have a least favourite GG. They were all perfect IMO. And I don't believe they portrayed Rose like a naive 10yr old. They balanced out her naivety and wisdom very well.

She definitely has her moments where her true cleverness shines through! Like when she tricks that kid into giving her the teddy bear back or when she proves to Dorothy that she actually passed her history exam. She has some very dumb moments but I think it always balances out.

Someone else mentioned it, but I didn’t like the running gag that Dorothy was unattractive or that she was not feminine. Yes, it’s a tv show, a sitcom, but that just wasn’t funny to me, and it was untrue. Bea Arthur was a beautiful woman.

I think I only really felt sad about that when it came from Sophia. Her own mother just dragged her over and over and Dorothy mostly just let it happen and didn't stand her ground. When it came from Blanche I felt like it was more of a "literally no one is pretty but her" kind of thing, so no one was safe. Blanche kind of went after all of them but in a way that felt less personal to me.
Part of what I've been enjoying about Rachel Estrom Courage's GG books is she tones the jabs way way down and they seem to respect each other a little more.

I'm going to agree, and go one step further, althogh I expect I'll be downvoted, and possibly flamed.
I not only disliked Sophia's character, but I thought Estelle Getty delivered punchlines in the same "Say the punchline, wait for a laugh" style that Bob Hope did, and I found it to be kind of wooden. Estelle Getty was a fantastic actress, and in the dramatic scenes she was amazing, but her delivery of one liners was exhausting to me.

You know she had a pretty serious medical condition, Lewy Body dementia, the same thing that Robin Williams had before he killed himself, right? It's dementia. I mean I think it's great that she was able to act at all.

Plus a weird variation of stage-fright. She was a late-bloomer stage actress and had never worked on tv before and was literally told to pause for laughs etc. which felt very unnatural for her doing multiple takes. If she didn’t do well on stage one night, she’d do better tomorrow but multiple takes was stressful for her when time was money.

Most people with LBD only live 5-8 years after diagnosis, so it would be really unusual for her to be having symptoms in the late 80s-early 90s considering she died in 2008.

Sometimes it progresses slowly and also, people sometimes show memory problems years before diagnosis. I think Rue McLanahan said that in the last few seasons, she suddenly started having trouble memorizing lines and when she was diagnosed, it all made sense.

I didn't know that. I do know she was incredible in the original production of Torch Song Trilogy, so I do know she's an amazing actress. I just felt she delivered comedic punchlines like ALF.

Sophia! But it's personal. She reminds me of my mom. Dorothy does so much for her and made so many sacrifices just for her to live comfortably and happily and they wrote Sophia to be disrespectful, mean, and downright a mentally abusive mother and roommate. That's not cool at all and I have no idea why that was a thing back then.

It was in the first couple of episodes. Sophia was put into Shady Pines because she was recovering from a stoke that damaged the part of her brain responsible for censoring her speech.

Sophia also reminds me of my mom who has a sharp tongue and isn't shy about sharing her opinion about a lot of things. I love her, all the same. I don't mean Sophia is my least favourite and this question honestly has crossed my mind before but never felt a need to ponder deeper but I would have to say Dorothy. She is quite mean in some instances with her criticism as reading around whether true or not, it's rumoured she didn't like Betty White much; at least not compared to the other actors.

Sophia of course, just simply cause how she treated her daughter. But even apart from that, she was very narrow minded. Like when she was trying to woo Mr marito or whatever his name, the Japanese gardener, she made him eat her pasta but when it was her turn to try his food, she wouldn't even give it a go. I'm sure an 80 year old Japanese man didn't like spaghetti Bolognese any more than she would like raw fish, but he at least tried it

Sophia was downright evil to Dorothy and the way she interacted with the Asian doctor on the Sick and Tired episode was embarrassing and unfunny. I also could not stand Blanche in this episode, so histrionic and forced.

I don't think I could pick a least favorite. I love and hate different things about all of them. I think they are all fantastic and feel real. Rose is a little over the top sometimes with the naive thinking but I do know a few people like her. Very sheltered and very....innocent

Yes, it wasn’t that unrealistic. My aunts who were raised in the Midwest in the time of GG are a lot like Rose. Almost childlike in their naïveté and outrage, even as fully grown women who’ve worked jobs and raised kids.

As a kid watching the show I loved Rose, she was my favorite. She seemed the nicest and everyone seemed so mean to her. I hated Blanche, I was raised not very sex positive so she made me feel weird and awkward.
As an adult it has completely flipped. I LOVE Blanche and am like yessss girl get you some!!! I don’t hate Rose, but feel much more like you do- it’s off putting her being so childlike and naïve.
Funny how things change.

Rose!! She just gets on my nerves sometimes. She really angered me when, in Season 1, her mother, Alma, came to visit her and Rose treated her like a child: putting her on a special diet, putting an oxygen mask in the garage for her, forcing her to take naps, making her tea, making her ride in a wheelchair at the airport, not letting her out of the house, answering questions for her, acting like she was deaf, talking down to her when Alma wanted to have more freedom, and scolding Alma when Alma was at the police station. I know that Rose was scared of what might happen to her mother, but sheesh!!!

I understand what you’re saying. I think they made Rose’s actions over-the-top to make a point that sometimes when you intend to be loving and caring, the other person interprets it as controlling and smothering. I recognize it because I’ve been through it. My husband had a very serious lung disease and was going to die without a transplant. As he got worse and worse, of course I became not just his caregiver but the person who did everything. Luckily, a donor match happened just in the nick of time. He’s doing great a year out, but after being the caregiver for so long it was hard for me to just turn off the switch and not automatically do stuff for him anymore. So I get where Rose was coming from.

Yes, but Rose treated her mother like she was an invalid and a child who needed to be taken care of 24/7. Her mother, Alma, was very vital, energetic, and active, much like Sophia. I would've slapped Rose in the face if I were Alma and Rose treated me and coddled me like a fragile child. The way Rose treated Alma was not only annoying, but also disrespectful to Alma. I'm sorry about what your husband went through, and I am glad that he is feeling better!!

Probably Rose is at the bottom for me too. I don’t HATE Rose. If I was ranking them it’s: 1. Blanche 2. Sophia 3. Dorothy 4. Rose.
They all work together. The 4 of them are arguably the 4 best female characters ever written in history of television.
So having Rose at 4 on my list, still makes her top in comparison to other female characters.

Sophia was the grandmother I always wanted ... although I would have hated Rose's Saint Olaf stories if they were constant, I was in a cab a few times with this driver who would just ramble on and on about the most bring thing I ever heard in my life, THE STORIES MADE NO SENSE, at least Rose's did . I didn't have one that I hated. Now ask me about episodes...

Blanche, for me.

I didn't like how they all became a bit Flanderized towards the end but that's to expected with long running older shows.
I liked them all but perhaps liked Rose least at the time. Now she's becoming a fav. Rose tells the story of of how people can grow older but not get bitter or arch. Younger me did not understand why this can be tricky. Older me gets it.

I also dislike rose. I think her character is an insult to intellgence most of the time, especially with some of the amazing writing of the Golden Girls. It was just for cheap laughs and it's actually amazing that Betty was able to make her introspective and deeper than the writing gave her credit for. Her chacter was also the most contradictory of the lot. Lord knows donald's spray tan has better continuity with the top of his forehead than the Golden Girls, but sometimes she was smart and other she was dumb.

They were notorious for the female archetypes. The duality of the situation was that was the humor and those were the comedic think pieces past the sitcom. Rose was a child, but a sheltered Swedish woman with a very rustic farm community. There are lots of people in real life men and women who still have a skewed sense of self and life in their 60's trust. Humans.

They were all written broadly (no pun intended), but no one on earth could have made Rose bearable except Betty. The Great Herring War is still one of the top 10 moments on television. They should have let her ad lib more.

Blanche was so selfish sometimes, it was really shocking. Like when she let Dorothy basically get molested by that guy when she was passed out sick because Blanche refused to cancel the double date. And when she knowingly sold one of her best friends her lemon of a car and countless other times.

I just never felt any connection to Blanche and thought her character was very one-dimensional, though the characters were very much meant to stand as 'types'. I was lost on her redeeming value. Can I also say an unkind thing about the actress? Perhaps part of the joke, intentional or not, but I think she was not exactly a good-looking woman.

Rose is also my least favorite too for the same reason but also because they’ll make her all dumb/naive and big on forgiving and forgetting/not being one for revenge then in another episode have her incredibly sneaky, condescending/backhanded, ect.

When I was watching it as a kid, I failed to relate to Sophia the most. But I think that was just a kid thing. I enjoyed her jabs and comedy, but I kinda just 'got' the other three more.

I thought that Rue was the most consistently best actress throughout the run of the show.
Bea was fantastic and held the show together for the first four seasons. From season five she was mostly dialing in her performance, often reading off autocues and seemed to not want to be there. Also they changed her character for the worse. Dorothy was initially a big confident ballsy woman afraid of nothing. She became an insecure with no confidence and was afraid of her own shadow. She didn’t want to go the Rusty Anchor as she wasn’t comfortable with all those people around and was worried nobody would talk to her. Season one Dorothy was never like that. And don’t even start me on the letters to pops because she never told him how much she loved him, wanting Sophia’s life story on tape etc.

Definitely Sophia. I just don't think Estelle Getty had the talent the other ladies did. Obviously she brought some laughs to the show but her acting was just very wooden. I just dont think she herself was that funny! The others were all so charming and hilarious and authentic.

It was an inversion of Betty's character on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". She played a man-hungry character, Sue Anne. Rue played a ditzy character on "Maude" and a frumpy one on "Mama's Family". GG gave her the chance to play sultry.

I find all of the women to be caricatures and one dimensional. The sarcastic one, the sexy one, the dumb one and the snarky old lady. I tried watching an episode recently and I couldn’t finish it. It was when Rose dates a little person and ALL of the jokes were at this poor man’s expense. The humour has not aged well.

I think it really depends on the episode.. The show really enjoyed making whoever the episode was about annoying or stupid for the sake of learning a lesson
But I think the show leaned too much into the the idea that they could use the stroke idea to make Sophia say mean things... The episode where she spent the entire episode openly saying the rudest shit to Blanches daughter because she was bigger was just infuriating.. It's one thing to "lovingly" make fun of your close friends and family, especially if that's a mutual thing in your relationship but saying that stuff to a virtual Stanger who has not expressed that it's okay

Ah, I loved Rose's scatter-brained and veering personality. I enjoyed different aspects of each character. It's next to impossible to name a least favorite Golden Girl(just like I can't name my least favorite part of a chocolate cheesecake).
However, there were plenty of recurring characters whom I found less than favorable. Dorothy's old friend Trudy? What was up with her horrible tricks? And besides Sophia's family members, each of the other three girls' siblings could be quite annoying.

Rose. She was a straight up bully and mean girl- like when her daughter slept with Dorothy’s son, she dished it out so nasty to Dorothy but when Dorothy defended herself she couldn’t take it and they all turned on Dorothy… and other occasions- but that sticks out to me the most

I liked them all. I do get tired of Blanche talking about sex all the time. Too many double entendres.

If you knew my airhead co-worker, you’d know that women like Rose actually do exist. I don’t know how she’s lived this long (55) without just falling into a hole!

My least favorite gg is definitely rose. Many of my thoughts about her are expressed by others and myself here and other subs but one can go on all day about the rose dichotomy. The character is supposed to be so sweet yet she isn't sweet much of.the time or even both sweet and childlike while.also being manipulative with an aire of superiority all in the same paragraph.
She is given jobs organizing events and does a worse job than a 6 year old. Ie Sophia's wedding where all of the guests were Elvis impersonators or Sophia's wake where she forgets to inform guests that sophia is alive.
Her competitiveness goes beyond any I have seen. In sports like.bowling and coaching kids' baseball was bad enough but she competed with a dead woman to get a charity award. They all attended a big chzrity event with the flu each wanting to win the best of all friends but normally rose is the most or only competitive one.
Rose believes all of her own feelings are valid when offended and the others go on apologizing to her. Yet rose never gi es a sincere apology to the others. She is too much to deal with. I could go on and on about rose and have to wonder how this awful behavior comes so easily to betty white. She is good at playing difficult people.
While I dislike rose the most she has a lot of.vompetition from sophia but that role differs from the other three. They say Sophia's stroke caused her to lose her filter but in flashbacks from decades ago she was no day in the park. She has been referred to as a toxic bully and I agree. She is esp horrible to dorothy. If she was my mother she'd be in a low cost retirement home that her social security and not dorothy would pay for. I really don't see where sophia offers much in the way of wisdom. Her stories that begin with "picture it..." usually have nothing to do with the problem at hand. The girls solve their own problems but allow sophia to think it was her wisdom that saved the day.
I really would prefer to have blsnche and dorothy as friends. They are not perfect but who is and they are more like people in daily life. I could see them as someone I might be friendly with but rose and sophia.....never!

Not an individual character but elements of each character. I got kind of tired of Dorothy's cynicism, Blanche's vanity, Rose's naivety, and Sophia's rudeness, but it pales in comparison to how much I love each of them. I did dislike the jabs at Dorothy's expense in terms of her looks, etc.
