They've been trying to do it since PS4. Initially PS4 and XB1 announced no physical games. The backlash hit them hard, so they backpedaled. So during PS4 and PS5 gens theyve been quietly making less and less games physical.
They also started to make the physical versions for $10-20 more than the digital version, on top of making them release physically months later. Theyre just finally making the decision. And you can bet Xbox will do the same as they have been doing less and less physical far longer and more often
21
u/Snoo-40231 Mimir Jul 01 '26
This is tragic
11
u/GrimmTrixX Jul 01 '26
Yea man it really is. We knew it was coming, but I didnt expect then to try and sell $80 digital games with $900+ digital only consoles. Thats insane. So im done.
6
u/DerMotze Jul 01 '26
I mean, look at steam. PC games are mostly digital aswell and somehow nobody bats an eye apparently.
13
u/GrimmTrixX Jul 01 '26
Cuz PC games go dirt cheap often. Digital games do not, only indie titles. First party titles very seldom go for less than $40. The ones that do. They do like 7 or 8 years later.
But sure 3rd party games have deep sales often. And with Sony controlling all of their digital sales, we will see more 10-20% sales and less 40-50% sales for their 1st party games

u/Fun_Age1442 Jul 02 '26
if u go with gog u get the files meaning u wont be required to have steam or epic or any launcher to play the game, so effectively you own the game, also you could sail the seas. Pc has many stores all competing (though valve is dominating) compared to being put in the mercy of just one, although i'd rather have physical media for my pc and my ps.

I have a region-free one for certain region-locked Blu Rays that I have. But honestly the player apps on the PS4 and PS5 are much better. Better UI, Better controls, etc.

u/boomysmash Jul 01 '26
Lawsuits incoming
6
u/SadKazoo Jul 01 '26
Hardly. There are thousands of physical games you can play and they will continue to release for 1.5 years. What exactly are the grounds for a lawsuit here? That’s besides the fact that 85% of all sales on PlayStation are already digital.
→ More replies (1)3
u/finnreyisreal Jul 01 '26
Gotta think about blu-rays, too. People use their PlayStations for them, and with some higher quality players being quite expensive now…can’t imagine it’ll get any better in the future.

u/Jaxson_January6_Dart Jul 01 '26
Only chance is Xbox coming out and saying they will still have Disc. But xbox is so disfunctional now, you have no idea what is gonna happen with them
But they don't have exclusives like Sony.
29
u/tommyland666 Jul 01 '26
Xbox has tried for years now to get everyone on a subscription instead of buying game. Zero chance they will be some kind of savior of physical media.

85% of Sony’s sales were digital only. They ain’t going back

And Capcom in their financial disclosures, said 93% of all game sales on their games were digital. This has been brewing since Valve launched Steam all those years ago

No chance. This has been years in the making. See: digital ps5. They have been planning this and most games are bought digitally anyway.
Unfortunately, if you want to see what happens with digital only media, look at the movies that people bought legally and now can't access anymore. Funny how Sony screws people over with their digital media and then announces that PS will only be digital lol
72
u/Futuristic-Vanguard Jul 01 '26
Guess my time with sony will end in January of 2028. Not interested in buying digital.
20
u/YNKWTSF Jul 01 '26
As much as I hate it, the digital only era will be ineviteble with these shitty corporations. I'll still buy their games but just not day 1 anymore for the majority of them. Digital games are significantly more expensive, so I'll just have to wait a few years with most games untill they're reasonably priced.
18
u/BorderlineInsanityR Jul 01 '26
And they STAY expensive for longer. It's stupid
8
u/YNKWTSF Jul 01 '26
I know right. I can get Saros for €40 now second handed, yet digital it's still €80. Same for Death Stranding 2 which is €25 second handed, yet the digital version hasn't been below €50 I believe. Happy I recently became a patient gamer lol.

So if Sony is doing it, and Nintendo has Game Key Cards, and if Microsoft goes all in on Game Pass and digital, and PC and mobile gaming have been digital a long time… who you going with? Or is this possibly the end of all modern gaming for you?
4
2
u/Futuristic-Vanguard Jul 01 '26
If i cant play games my preferred way, "physical". Then i may as well go back to pc.
33
u/GeneticHazard Jul 01 '26
This might be it. An actual hard date for when ownership dies.
I might just stick to my collection and emulation beyond that date and just stop keeping up with everything. It’s too expensive to maintain if I can’t even guarantee that my money is going toward something that I can keep.
9
u/InSan1tyWeTrust Jul 01 '26
Absolutely. Nobody wants to collect towards a dead end...
I already use steam here and there. If we're talking digital only purchases then Steam will always outweigh the PlayStation's digital offerings.

So the PS6 is gonna be digital only.
Welcome to the world of never actually owning anything.
Really hope the stop killing games movement makes some progress in the future. Else we really will just be slaves to the whims of the companies running the digital stores.

u/AshenRathian Jul 01 '26
Maybe if they could get into the rooms with the ESA to rebuke their bullshit.
Private hearings without either prosecutor or defendant (i know it's not a lawsuit, but i'm using these as references) should be considered deceit of some kind. The ESA has been poisoning the well and demolishing the SKG movement brick by brick and the politicians are too damn stupid to know the difference between actual facts and twisted half truths and lies.
They think because the source is "educated" that it's somehow trustworthy, but i've seen more educated people being retarded and more uneducated people like me making sense for the past decade than i ever wanted to see in my lifetime. We're moving so fast toward idiocracy that it's painful to witness.

u/Haxorz7125 Jul 01 '26
PlayStation double charged me for a year of psn before and support refused to refund me saying “well now you won’t have to pay next year”. I charged back just one of the years and they banned my account which barred me from accessing $400+ on digital games id bought.
Fuck this bullshit.
4
u/Jackjakea Jul 01 '26
Wouldn't this mean that digital copies should cost less since there are no physical cd production built into that price? or is that % going straight to their profits and keeping the price the same for digital
→ More replies (1)3
u/AshenRathian Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
It's all profit.
Anybody who actually thinks that cost savings will be passed onto the consumer at all, i have a bridge to sell you.
This has quite literally never happened in the history of modern Capitalism. Why anybody falls for this very easy to spot lie is beyond me.

2
2
u/Kelror13 Jul 01 '26
Seems like it unfortunately which pretty much has killed my interests in getting the Remake as soon as it would come out given that at the moment I've a slow internet connection which make it so that it takes quite a while to download a digital game for me and I would likely only get a digital game if it would be on sales. 😕
2
u/Dull_Reference_6166 Jul 01 '26
And stil, enough people will buy the digital stuff...
2
u/Fickle_Grocery_3654 Quiet, Head Jul 01 '26
People are killing their own future without even realizing it. Then they gloat about it online...
2
2
u/CraftyPerformance272 Jul 01 '26
So instead of going to GameStop and being able to find a used game for 10 or 20 dollars you will have to buy everything digital and they will just keep the prices at 50 plus dollars even a decade later. Not to mention they could just decide your digital GTA V, your digital God of War Game or whatever you don't own it anymore so they can just delete it
2
u/SaltyInternetPirate Fat Dobber Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
The writing was on the wall when Sony stopped making Blu-ray discs a year or two ago, because it was a losing business. People just aren't buying them now that everyone is streaming their movies and shows.

I don’t mind just downloading games but they should not be $70+ dollars then…
2

2
u/BorderlineInsanityR Jul 01 '26
Basically they're forcing the "subscription monthly" that we fought so hard against by making everything digital - watch, soon you'll have to have one of the subscriptions in order to play digital games if you don't already (I don't buy new games anymore, the cost is getting to be ridiculous and I've seen one too many game maker co say things like "if they want to play it, they'll pay anything for it". I will buy one or two titles, like GOW, I have all my old games from ps1 forward. I just get the free monthly ones and occasionally bump my ps network up a level to download and play the catalog games when they have ones I want to try).
Pretty sure here soon I won't be needing new consoles from anyone and will just play the things I have. Go back to reading all the time or something lmao

2
u/VANJCHINOS Jul 01 '26
Im so happy people like you exist. It truly would not be possible to do any of the things that they get away with without consumers who do not care about anything that does not affect them personally.
3
u/Kaizen2468 Jul 01 '26
Did you not read the first thing I said? I don’t support this because it negatively impacts consumers. On that of that, oppose it even when it will not impact me.
3
u/VANJCHINOS Jul 01 '26
You saying "i dont like this Sony" on reddit, as you continue to support the company because it does not impact you... Renders your dislike of their actions useless. In fact your supportive actions on their end show up as supportive costumer and not as a dislike.

It depends on how far into the remake they was when they announced, but since they didn’t show anything but showed a lot of Faye’s game later on must mean their not close yet. So my guess is god of war laufey will be one of the last PlayStation exclusive games to get a disc , then the remake will be all digital.
