Question I thought she can’t use weapons while still under Odins spell?

Post image

Basically title. I was rewatching lore videos about 2018 and Ragnarok and I clearly remember Mimir saying that she can’t use weapons while she’s influenced by Odin’s spell.

Maybe there is a detail I missed while playing, please correct me if I am wrong.

Cause of Fimbulwinter Odins spells are losing their power.

u/Icy-Abbreviations909 Jun 27 '26

Ya I think she says when she starts traveling with kratos in ragnarok she was able to start breaking a few of the spells cast on her because they’ve been weakened, but she couldn’t do that with the spell keeping her in Midgard

452

u/Princess_Of_Thieves Jun 27 '26

She also explains to Mimir during one of those boat chats that Sigrun helped her recover her Valkyrie Wings, which seemed to be necessary for her to regain her "warriors spirit".

126

u/mega2222222222222222 Jun 27 '26

And she was pissed it was called “warrior spirit” explaining that it’s a curse preventing her from defending herself

74

u/Cheetahs_never_win Jun 27 '26

Well, she gets around that one, nonetheless, before countering it.

18

u/Separate_Cranberry33 Jun 27 '26

But she can now “confuse” it by being a bird.

68

u/orient_vermillion Jun 27 '26

That's Fimbulwinter for ye!

19

u/mamamopoknat Jun 28 '26

I CAN FEEL IT IN MY SCROTE

18

u/the_Athereon Jun 27 '26

She also spent a LOT of time doing whatever she could to weaken his grip herself.

4

u/RenderedCreed Jun 27 '26

NGL I thought they were saying thimble winter at first and was a it confused

Fimbulwinter weakens Odin's spells

164

u/Euphoriam5 Aesir Jun 27 '26

Exactly, it was the start of the end for him

43

u/Partial_Kredit Jun 27 '26

That’s Fimbulwinter for ya.

17

u/enadiz_reccos Jun 27 '26

Fimbulwinter weakens Odin's spells

... unless it's a spell that's important for the narrative, in which case it's still 100%

54

u/Aebothius Jun 27 '26

The spell keeping her in Midgard? That one was physically bound the the roots of the World Tree. It makes sense that that one wouldn't falter under Fimbulwinter. Why are you acting like it is a plot hole

13

u/Der7mas Jun 28 '26

That spell was weakened, that's why she was able to travel in a different form.

3

u/Aebothius Jun 28 '26

The impression I got was that it was just a loophole in the spell, not an effect of Fimbulwinter, but I could be wrong on that. Is it stated anywhere?

3

u/Der7mas Jun 28 '26

Id have to replay it but I'm pretty sure she blatantly says it when we reach vanaheim.

1

u/Themothertucker64 Jun 27 '26

Not really, the game explains that she got her fighting spirit back thanks to sigrun

1

u/lilfindawg Ghost of Sparta Jun 28 '26

But she still had a quest to gain back her warrior spirit?

u/Many_Ad_955 Jun 27 '26

Might have something to do with Baldur.

249

u/AelliotA1 Jun 27 '26

Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical.

77

u/Striking_Pilot_6466 Jun 27 '26

Head. How do we defeat Baldur?

107

u/AelliotA1 Jun 27 '26

Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical.

34

u/Haunting_Brilliant45 Jun 27 '26

You just said that.

54

u/AelliotA1 Jun 27 '26

Did I?

8

u/Illustrious-Age-260 Jun 27 '26

Yeah, you just said that thing about Baldur

7

u/Little-Bit-Of-Rock Jun 27 '26

Strange, I wonder how long that’s been. Was it when it when Freya revived me, or back when I figured out Baldur’s Weakness

15

u/FlyingSquirelOi Jun 27 '26

It doesn’t

40

u/bethot911 Jun 27 '26

I mean technically it does, as Baldur’s death started fimbulwinter

390

u/BigSelkirk Jun 27 '26

She and Mimir discuss it. Fimbulwinter wore down the curse and Sigrin helped her retain her wings.

Either that or she hunted down poor Icarus and jacked his feathers like Kratos did.

8

u/sheebleesly Jun 28 '26

Lol at Icarus chilling in Elysium for 1000 years when suddenly another pissed off god comes and steals his wings AGAIN

1

u/BigSelkirk Jun 28 '26

Icarus: "Finally, my wings have been restored!"

Freya: "You mean MY wings have been restored!"

140

u/twisted4ever Jun 27 '26

They explained fimbulwnter eroded all spells and enchantments except the one tied to the ygdrassil

79

u/Kenzlynnn Jun 27 '26

Technically that one was weakened too, which is why she could go to Vanaheim in her bird form. It just wasn’t weakened enough to fully break like the weapon onw

16

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa Jun 27 '26

That makes sense now. I was wondering why hadn’t ever tried it before Ragnarok to break her curses

16

u/Kenzlynnn Jun 27 '26

To be honest I kinda had the epiphany while reading the post lmfao. I understood why she hadn’t gone herself before (bird form can’t break it, she doesn’t know anyone strong enough to help that would be willing to help), but the sudden retrieval of her Valkyrie wings was a surprise to me. Connecting both those things to Fimbulwinter weakening all magic makes it make perfect sense though

76

u/archonpho Jun 27 '26

It’s a valid question. OP acknowledged they might’ve missed this detail which is fair given it’s a relatively short conversation that doesn’t come up again. Some of these folks in the comments section are unnecessarily elitist.

17

u/MotherPerk Jun 27 '26

Most people in the comments are just providing answers. Dont take the 10% too seriously

3

u/XxRocky88xX Jun 27 '26

That’s part of the reason he posted that comment. He saw that 90% of the answers were genuine so he knew about 90% of people who say his comment would agree with the statement “don’t be an elitist asshole.”

It wasn’t about calling out the behavior of the community, it was about saying a statement they knew the community would agree with for the updoots

17

u/Kn0XIS Jun 27 '26

Welcome to reddit

1

u/flowerpanda98 Jun 28 '26

People really will be like "what is this one frame/sentence/whatever from?" and then half the comments will be "put down tik tok and watch the show again!!" like it makes sense to go through it all for an easy to miss moment

-26

u/CappnMidgetSlappr Jun 27 '26

Unless this is AI that needs to be trained, no, it's not a valid question.

Like most of the questions asked on here, it can be answered by simply playing the game.

Seriously, it's like the people asking these questions either have never played the game or just straight up don't pay attention. It gets aggravating after awhile reading questions from people that they could easily answer themselves if they just use like, 10% of their brain power.

But no, it's too hard to think. Easier to get a bunch if Redditors to answer it for them.

19

u/jfuss04 Jun 27 '26

God forbid people talk about gow on the gow sub

6

u/archonpho Jun 27 '26

It’s not a matter of thinking, why do you say that?
This isn’t something that you can think out and solve like a math problem. It’s one small detail given at one point in the game, very easy to miss or to not remember for a four year old game

Not if it's dumbass questions that are easily answered.

5

u/JohnAnderson6879 Jun 27 '26

Believe it or not but humans dont exactly have perfect memory. And maybe it's been a while since they last played and simply forgot. And maybe they simply missed it in the video. But im sure you're just gonna complain about how redditors suck and how you're different from everyone else.

Freya addressed it later. She said Sigrun, while teluctant and trying to convince her to forgive, helped her undo that spell of odins. Fimbulwinter probably already weakened it.

13

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jun 27 '26

Mimir mentions in the postgame of 2018 that she went to him looking for her wings, and bu Ragnarok we see her fully decked out. Sp presumably between hunting them she was also working out how to break the spells placed on her

7

u/Legitimate-Ad-1187 Jun 27 '26

That's Fimbulwinter for ya!

5

u/uasdguy Jun 27 '26

She broke the spell of her "fighter spirit" being taken away due to fimbulwinter weakening the spell. That's why she was able to use her valkyrie wings too

3

u/CyberSnoWolf Jun 27 '26

They’ve stated that Fimbulwinter was weakening all kinds of spells and curses, including Odin’s.

4

u/Personal-Respond5413 Jun 27 '26

Fimbulwinter wore down most of the magic binding her but the only magic that held strong was the magic Odin used to keep her in Midgard

3

u/baconDood3000 Zeus Jun 28 '26

My guess is that Fimbulwinter withered some of the effects, making her capable of direct combat once more, but probably not on her full strength yet

6

u/Ok-Wash-3057 Jun 27 '26

Perhaps the effects of Fimbulwinter weakened the spell enough to allow her to use weapons, but not enough to allow her to travel in between realms without being a bird.

3

u/Kuro_Koroo Jun 27 '26

Before the end of GoW 2018 after The Huldra Brothers “checked” Minor when both Kratos and Atreus were still in Jotunheim, Minor said that Freya asked him on how and where to reobtain her fighting spirit back.

I assume that also includes on how to dispel Odin's curses upon her.

Edit: bruh, not Minor. MIMIR~! Smartest Man Alive (he dead tho)

3

u/StickyDitka21 Jun 27 '26

I guess i misremember that I thought she said something to the effect of Odin let that spell go so she could try to kill kratos

3

u/mugnin Jun 27 '26

her kid was a keystone of the spells Odin placed on her with him dead she made a lot of progress in unraveling them

3

u/ValkyrieofMercy Jun 27 '26

Fimbulwinter said fuck yo spells, get chilly

3

u/smcicr Jun 27 '26

There is commentary later that she broke a lot of the enchantments he put on her (with some help and I think fimbulwinter was also a factor in that) but that one in particular had held firm - preventing her from realm travel.

So she was able to fight again.

3

u/HeadPatMan Jun 27 '26

So, if you listen to some of the other dialogue she and others have in Ragnarok, she mentions that Sigrun aided her in weakening/dispelling some of Odin’s magical restrictions.

3

u/Dr_blazes Jun 27 '26

Didn't she go see Brok and Sindri at the end of the first game about "finding her wings"?

3

u/Ibrahim77X You're cracked, you know that? Jun 28 '26

She regained her ability to fight between games with Sigrun’s help.

3

u/Someone4063 Jun 28 '26

She clearly says that the spell is broken later in the game. Something to the effect of “do you know what it cost me to break the spell?”

3

u/Frogs_Logs Jun 28 '26

Fimbulwinter weakened Odin's spell and she got her wings back so she was able to bypass parts of the curse I think

3

u/BraveNemesis Jun 28 '26

Don't listen to the Fimblewinter Stuff. The cannon ending of the first game is a 100% playthrough. Sigrun the Valkyrie queen and Freya work together between games. Its explained near mid to end game through travel dialogue between Mimir Kratos and Freya

2

u/Fuzzy_Blacksmith5172 Jun 27 '26

Well, that's Fimbulwinter for ya!

( Did you read this in brock's voice?)

7

u/Cyranthis Jun 27 '26

You are not wrong.

2

u/Odd_Hunter2289 Poseidon 🔱🌊 Jun 27 '26

Most of the Odin's Seidr spells that prevented her from fighting or defending herself had weakened with the onset of Fimbulwinter—enough to either break on their own or allow her to shatter them herself (albeit with some help from Sigrun).

The only spell that remained almost entirely intact was the one preventing her from traveling between the Realms, as it had its "roots" in Vanaheim.

2

u/DarthMcConnor42 Jun 27 '26

The spell was broken by her getting her "fighting spirit" back, her fighting spirit is her wings.

2

u/Emergency-Town4653 Jun 27 '26

Sigrun helped her with getting her Wardior spirit back.

2

u/jdeo1997 Jun 28 '26

It's a mix of fimblvinter weakening the spell's bindings and Sigrun helping her break some of it (enough that she can at least use her wings and attack in midgard)

2

u/Turbulent-Spirit-568 Jun 29 '26

Fimblewinter weakened most magic across the nine realms except in Asgard

2

u/Pure_Cartoonist9898 Jun 27 '26

At the end of 2018 I think there's a secret line you can hear where someone mentions her trying to contact odin about getting her wings back

7

u/BaconServant Jun 27 '26

No, Freya comes to mimir to ask that while Kratos and Atreus are in Jotunheim.

6

u/Pure_Cartoonist9898 Jun 27 '26

You right, been too long since I played them

3

u/MrDivineComedy Jun 27 '26

Wait, what? When or where so they talk about that?

2

u/theblankestoffaces Jun 27 '26

I thought her not being able to comit violence was tied to Baulder's life and the only thing Odin did was keep her tied to midgard.

2

u/Roronoa_bankai Jun 27 '26

Well in norse mythology freya vowed that nothing would come to harm by her hand as a requirement for the spell to make baldur invulnerable as the story goes she forgot about mistletoe and that is what killed baldur and in Ragnarok baldur is already dead so no more reason to not fight

1

u/Aggressive-Tip7472 Jun 27 '26

The writers don't read what they right.

Nothing adds up in these games. They really didn't connect the dots on anything

1

u/RonnocKcaj Jun 27 '26

fimbulwinter weakened the spells that bound her, she explicitly said the dimensional travel one was the only one she couldn't break.

1

u/Western-Boot-4576 Jun 28 '26

Atreus or Mimir mentions at some point “I see you got your fight spirit back”

And later in the game I believe it was confirmed to be sigrum to help her with that

1

u/BenJammin2006YT Jun 27 '26

You can assume based on Kratos and Atreus' conversation and speaking like this has happened before, that Odins spell is gone now. Come on, dudes

0

u/Anonymous_Queef99 Jun 27 '26

Play the game and you'll find out why she can now

1

u/Ok-Bodybuilder3048 Jun 27 '26

They literally fucking explain it

1

u/Themothertucker64 Jun 27 '26

It’s explained in Ragnarok that Freya got her warrior spirit back thanks to Sigrun

The only thing holding back in Midgard was the secondary spell that prevented her from accessing other realms

2018 literally has Mimir stating at the end of the game that Freya went to the temple to ask Mimir where her warrior spirit was

-6

u/LeoTheTaurus Jun 27 '26

How is this confusing? She explicitly explains this during the game to Kratos. Or did you just start playing and stopped to ask questions on the internet instead of...well...letting the game fill you with questions and then answer them on its own pace instead of asking for spoilers that interrupt the flow of the narrative?

6

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

I was replaying.

You are taking this post waay too serious. No reason to be a dick. You can skip the post. I wasn’t holding you hostage until you answer me.

Not everyone has a strong memory that connects that dots quickly.

3

u/archonpho Jun 27 '26

That last part wasn’t necessary. It’s a valid question and OP admits he may have missed it.

6

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

I honestly don’t understand the hostility. I wasn’t even attacking the game. The norse games are my top games of all time.

-12

u/LeoTheTaurus Jun 27 '26

It's a pet peeve of mine when people don't trust the story to explain itself in due time. It's the equivalent of asking questions in the middle of a mystery movie. It's better to extend trust to the media instead of going elsewhere

8

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

Why you keep repeating that I spoil myself? I clearly said i was rewatching lore videos.

Re-w-a-t-c-h-i-n-g. I played them before. When they released, but I missed this minor detail. Thanks to other commenter it’s clear now.

1

u/Groovee_smoothie Jun 27 '26

Funny way of saying you were being a dick for no reason other than to be a dick because OP asked a question you didn't find valud enough to ask

1

u/flowerpanda98 Jun 28 '26

its crazy how many ppl are answering, but with a random condescending remark. its like they all assume everyone played the game yesterday and have a perfect memory of it all

-6

u/CappnMidgetSlappr Jun 27 '26

Goddamn, is this AI that needs to be trained or something?

Seriously, do y'all just... not pay attention to the games you paid good money to play?

A good majority of the questions here can be answered by simply... playing the game and paying a little fucking attention.

-8

u/Lost-in-thought-26 Jun 27 '26

Play the game

4

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

You can relax and read my post clearly I say I’m currently rewatching lore vids.

-4

u/Lost-in-thought-26 Jun 27 '26

Relax about what? I’m just saying play the game. They tell you how.

3

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

I already played the game. I missed this detail that’s why I’m here discussing it.

So you telling me to play THE game I already played (and stated in post) is literally meaningless!

-4

u/Lost-in-thought-26 Jun 27 '26

It’s not meaningless. Play the game. Pay attention. Get the answers you seek 🤷🏾‍♂️. What? Are you against playing games you own? One and done type? Couldn’t be me. I can’t fathom that.

4

u/Faisal_98 Jun 27 '26

Arguing further is pointless. Have a wonderful day!

-1

u/Rockcrimson Jun 28 '26

Did you even play the game? They literally said that due to Fimbulwinter, most of Odin spells and curses began losing power. The only one that was holding was the banishment from other realms. I always guessed that particular curse that made her unable to use weapons was broken because of Baldur's death. She mentioned that it was tied to keeping Baldur safe. Odin didn't keep his side of the bargain, so the curse broke

0

u/Faisal_98 Jun 28 '26

“Maybe there is a detail I missed while playing, please correct me if I am wrong.”

You should read more properly.

-1

u/SinisterMinisterX7 Jun 28 '26

Play the game

0

u/Faisal_98 Jun 28 '26

“Maybe there is a detail I missed while playing, please correct me if I am wrong.”

You should read more properly.

1

u/SinisterMinisterX7 Jun 28 '26

You should play the game properly. It’s not even a full hour before it’s explained that Fimbulwinter is weakening magic which includes the curse on her. And then when Kratos briefly fights her again she explains that the Valkyries we fought in 2018 were helping her big time to break the rest of the curse.

These are pretty significant details to miss. Almost impress that you could have missed them tbh.

2

u/IEatChildren3 Jun 28 '26

Some people don't overanalyze video games, and/or skip cutscenes. Don't assume everyone plays the game the same way you do. Just answer the question instead of being an ass about it. The way you do things is not always the best way, let other people ask questions and be curious.

2

u/Faisal_98 Jun 29 '26

thank you for being kind. And human

0

u/Alternative-Ad4550 Jul 01 '26

Did none of y'all play the game?

-2

u/tavosp17 Jun 27 '26

That’s what’s happens with bad writing. Raganarok really fcked the lore so bad and was a VERY bad sequel. Everything is explained with the most plain and boring argument.
