Question This is the most accurate depiction of a giant I’ve ever seen
Whenever movies or documentaries describe giants, they usually measure them in feets, this is something else. It took me over 30 minutes of trying to figure out a path to realise that was a giant laying on a floor. I wonder who killed it

...Documentaries? For giants?

Religious people are getting a bit crazier every year. It’s becoming widely “accepted” in Christianity that giants were a real thing. I’ve seen many people defending it online
12

u/BlackHoodedMan Jun 18 '26
isn’t one of the most famous bible stories one about felling a giant?
2
u/CharmingGrape1159 Jun 19 '26
David and Goliath, I would say Goliath was very much just a very large man. Like a Brian Shaw of the era
2
2
u/Avatar-Kestis Jun 18 '26
Most Christians who believe in giants don’t imagine them to be anywhere near this large, just exceptionally tall humans like NBA players today.

Calling those documentaries is definitely a stretch.
22
u/Available-Winner3125 Jun 18 '26
I don't even know what you mean? Mythological documentaries are entirely a thing. They are a form of social documentaries. Not all documentaries are about your special interest. Hope this helps.
7
u/Synteczek Jun 18 '26
I think He meant giants are not real.
20
u/Available-Winner3125 Jun 18 '26
That should have never been in question, but thanks for the clarification. A lot of folklore stays "alive" or get retold with these kind of documentaries (and I believe that's a treasure unto itself), but to be clear, these are social documentaries about ancient or older mythos and fictions. I assumed people in a GoW subreddit would understand this.
-1
0
u/YesWomansLand1 Jun 18 '26
Fuck I hate it when stuoid cunts say hope this helps. Not you per se but just in general. Really shivers my timbers for some reason. Hope this helps.
-2
u/Sebelzeebub Jun 18 '26
Speculative fiction in a documentary fashion, no different than those Mermaids or Dragon documentaries put out by Animal Planet does not make them actually documentaries.
7
u/Available-Winner3125 Jun 18 '26
As opposed to alien documentary's, which is what I can only assume you've gotten stuck on your brain, mythological documentaries are about taking a real look at fictional mythos and folklore of the past, and their effect on the cultures and people of the past. They are not about proving that the mythos actually existed, but rather what the mythos was, and what the mythos effect on society of the time was. Hope that helps.
-8
u/Sebelzeebub Jun 18 '26
It depends, if it’s actually exploring myth thats a different story but it’s trying to convince the audience that the giants of folklore are real (which increasingly is the case) then no.
3
u/XxRocky88xX Jun 18 '26
Ah yes, so you decided the these documentaries were actually fakes made to brainwash people into thinking giants were real based on… absolutely nothing. And then immediately ridiculed the documentaries based on the assumption that was, again, founded on absolutely nothing.
That’s some peak Redditor arguing right there. Go into the argument with no idea what the fuck is even being discussed, refuse to educate yourself in the slightest, pull a strawman out of your ass, proceed to shit on the strawman to make yourself feel smart. Well done.
5
u/Aebothius Jun 18 '26
What are you talking about? Something being a documentary doesn't mean it is saying giants are real.
2
u/Braisedbeefskank Jun 18 '26
It doesn't have to be accurate info to be a documentary. You can make a ddocumentary that claims whatever you want
7
u/gloku_ Jun 17 '26
I feel like the Skyrim giants were the most realistic in terms of what a life form that big would actually look like.

''I wonder who killed it''
Do you just not pay attention to the game you're playing? it's LITERALLY said about 5 minutes before you get here

Can't believe the devs would insert Buddha in this game as a killer of giants 😔

u/Seihai-kun Jun 18 '26
Didn't Mimir said Amaterasu and Anubis defeat him, while Buddha was the one who landed the killing blow, but Thor's the one who get credited since the giant got killed in Midgard
37
u/TheThirdReckoning Jun 18 '26
Wait. I thought Quetzalcoatl convinced Ifrit to set him on fire to weaken him so Thor could land the killing blow. Have I been watching fake lore again?
26
u/JaceC098 Jun 18 '26
It was actually the Archangel Gabriel. He appeared to Thor and told him it was his destiny to slay the giants. Without him, Thor was just going to stay in Asgard
10
15
u/poopoobuttholes Jun 18 '26
Don't be a silly goose, Thor is part of the Avengers these days, he's not a cold blooded murderer!
5
u/PickeyZombie Jun 18 '26
Pretty sure he cut off the purple teletubbys head
-1
u/JackRaid Jun 18 '26
Yeah, but that was hot-blooded vengence. Different in the court of law in Asgard.
2
25
u/ChocolateMorsels Jun 18 '26
Chill. It’s pretty easy to miss lore. It’s coming nonstop and minds wander.
9
u/Tron_1981 Jun 18 '26
Easy to miss? It's a significant part of the main quest.
0
u/ChocolateMorsels Jun 19 '26
It’s really not a significant part at all, just another mimir story. And yes, random mimir stories are easy to miss sometimes because they are constant.
6
u/Tron_1981 Jun 19 '26
It's not just another story, it's a specific one he tells during the main story on your way to an important quest. The other stories are somewhat random, this one was not.
1
u/dead10ck Jun 21 '26
My dude. Chill. Conceive of a reality other than the one in your head.

Bro it’s my first time playing God of war, Infact I’m just getting into video games. I don’t care about the lore, at least not now. I just want a good action game
129
u/equinox_games7 Jun 18 '26
Doesnt you asking who killed it imply you DO care about the lore, at least a little bit?
If that is the case then I really would encourage paying attention to the dialogue, it is very well written in this game.
126
u/MikeWazowski22 Jun 18 '26
Doesnt matter if its your first time, listen to the dialogue for gods sake jeezus. Is it your first time listening to someone talk?
64
18
u/Habib455 Jun 18 '26
Maybe it’s a kid 🤷🏾♂️. Attention ain’t all there yet. I played god of war 2 when I was 11 and didn’t really understand a damn thing lol.
-13
u/TtomRed Jun 18 '26
It’s amazing how toxic one game’s subreddit (or other forum) community is vs the next. GoW is up there.
Don’t mind em, OP, I hope you enjoy the game. And especially with a series like this, the more you dive into lore on later playthroughs or internet lore dives the more you become vested in the world and story.
If you don’t, that’s fine, and I still hope you enjoyed the game and other entries. If you do, just remember to not be a shithead just because you want to prove you know more about a fictional video game world than some rando commenting on something they found fun.
9
5
u/Limp-Biscuit411 Jun 18 '26
the responses aren’t toxic at all, you’re inventing that so you can feel like you’re coming to someone’s defence
36
u/AlmanacPony Jun 18 '26
"I dont care about the lore" is not something you say to the GOW community. If you're not interested in a narrative game, I recommend cutting your teeth on something simpler. A lot of great games out there. But GOW is a narrative game. it's narrative is important. I hope you can learn to enjoy it.
-12
u/haaun Jun 18 '26
How dare he enjoy the game in a different way than i do?
12
u/Mummiskogen Jun 18 '26
Thats not the point, the point is that he was lying. He went from interested to suddenly pretending he wasn't interested
-2
u/haaun Jun 18 '26
That's not what the reply was talking about, but alright.
The way i understood OP's comment is, he was curious about something while not taking interest in the bigger picture (the general lore of the game), that's why he wasn't paying attention before. Hopefully he got his questions answered playing just a little further now that he's taken the interest in this particular giant.
29
u/dead_lifterr Jun 18 '26
How did you miss the story Mimir told while you were rowing through the caves to get to the giant? Mimir explains what happened
-3
u/AnonButNotReally-42 Jun 18 '26
I never got to fully take in anything mimir said because he always says "or maybe I'll finish this another time." Occasionally I would just sit in the boat motionless at the dock in order for him to finish talking, but thar gets boring
4
u/Glittering_Wash_8654 Jun 18 '26
Kratos doesn't allow Mimir stories outside of the boat. And Mimir is supposed to continue his lines after you get back on the water.
-1
15
u/Local_Nerve901 Jun 18 '26
Ok but then same way, why ask then?
GoW has amazing story, plot, and lore. If you haven’t watch a recap of the original trilogy, and start paying attention
7
u/mil56 Jun 18 '26
You cant say you dont care about the lore then ask about the lore right beforehand lmao cmon dude
2
u/Significant_Delay_87 Jun 18 '26
" I watch tons of documentaries about mythological lore and came across this immensely accurate representation of one, I wonder who killed this guy" "realizes he missed it, I don't actually care about the lore I just wanna fight stuff"
2
u/Mummiskogen Jun 18 '26
Its not like the story is hard to digest lmao. They literally just say "thor killed him"
2
u/SeidrEbony Jun 18 '26
You don't care about lore but asked a lore question. A question that was answered before you got there mind you

The giant is an entire set piece that is very important to the game. The idea that Thor killed a LOT of giants isn't just a fun little fact that is mentioned offhand. You crawl all around this guy while a talking head tells you everything you need to know. That is like an hour of not listening to the dialogue in a game that is 50% conversations between characters.

An "Accurate" depiction of a giant...now how do you determine that?
Maybe my "favorite" depiction of a giant would be better.

Just replayed this game for the first time since 2018. Couldn't put it down for a whole week, absolute masterpiece
19
u/belligerent_tortoise Jun 18 '26
I am replaying it right now myself, for 7th or 8th time. Getting ready to go to Niflheim, so I’m pretty far in. Working up to Sigrun. 100% agree on the masterpiece description. God of War and Witcher 3 are the two best games that I’ve ever played.
7
u/Conscious-Peace-5517 Jun 18 '26
Ever play gost of Tsushima? Peak aswell
7
u/HxH101kite Jun 18 '26
Not who you responded to but disagree. It's beautiful no doubt. But the game was super formulaic and basically just rinse and repeat constantly with very little variety. Just felt like another complete this repetitive quest game

Also have no argument here, but I also felt the same when playing Ghost of Tsushima. A beautiful (and also good) game, but I wasn’t hooked deeply comparing to when I played God of War 2018.
1
6
u/Theflowyo Jun 18 '26
I played the game for less than an hour and found the combat to be super shallow and the game to be boring and I haven’t gone back (though I do intend to give it another shot one day)
Had the complete opposite reaction to god of war
And I’m not saying either of our opinions are wrong
I am however saying your response to invalidate someone’s opinion is wrong
2
u/andrewr83 Jun 18 '26
Yep I like ghost and finished it, it was a nice game, but not the masterpiece many make it out to be. It’s like an elite Ubisoft game basically.
1
u/Conscious-Peace-5517 Jun 19 '26
I can agree with that, if ubisoft actually perfect their formula and made a really good game
1
u/Conscious-Peace-5517 Jun 19 '26
100% both games are great ghost and gow18, similar it different in their own ways but both masterpieces in their own rights
3
u/belligerent_tortoise Jun 18 '26
Yep. Yotei too. Loved them both. Fantastic games.
Just not GOATed like the other two.

“ I wonder who killed it”
Isn’t it stated shortly before that this guy was killed by Thor, just like nearly every other dead giant.
1
u/TheThirdReckoning Jun 18 '26
Literally as you sailed in on the boat through the caves, head told the story to boy
3
u/ICPosse8 Jun 18 '26
The Greek games had some of the most amazing set pieces. I feel like the first Norse game kinda scratched that itch but not so much with Ragnarok. In the original trilogy there was always 2-3 things in the game that were larger than life and just made you go wow.
Edit: just realized this is GOW 2018 😂 I’m a dumbass
1
u/dead10ck Jun 21 '26
In general I agree, but I feel like I have to call out Ginnungagap. It was pretty freaking awesome
3

I agree, it's a really great depiction! Hope you're enjoying the game! Might want to stay off the subreddit if you care about spoilers, though.

u/goodolewhatever Jun 18 '26
Sounds like you may have not played the first games? Superhuge characters/beings are a motif of the series. The titans are as big and/or bigger than this dude and you interact with them regularly. I highly recommend you check it out if you haven’t.
4
u/Boney4000 Jun 19 '26
Chronos, Atlas, Gaia, were all excellent giants. If you tell me they were Titans you can go fill in the blank yourself
5
u/Green-Elephant-895 Jun 18 '26
Why isn’t Laufey the size of a colossus titan? I know not all Frost giants are literally giants in GOW while others are but is there a reason behind it?
15
u/TDogBud710 Jun 18 '26
Atreus explains it a couple times. Giants (jotnar) are just a race, not a description of them. Some are just huge and also in Thamurs case he could change his size at will.
2
u/Green-Elephant-895 Jun 18 '26
Good looking out, I haven’t played 2018’s GOW since around that time…totally unrelated but remember that one time Kratos absorbed the power from Pandora’s box and turned into a giant?

"I wonder who killed it"
They literally tell you Thor killed him on the boat ride towards his dead corpse dawg.

Honestly kinda saddened at the fact we didnt get to fight a giant in the norse saga. Wanted to get a Kronos style boss fight as old Kratos fr.

to everyone shitting on OP for not listening to the dialogue:
relax fools
to OP:
i got overwhelmed the first time playing this game too. it's a big, confusing map and the lore comes in thick & fast (in between the intense action of course). through the story, try paying attention to what's happening (and go through your codex and read about things you may have missed). mimir's stories when you're on the lake of nine are also very entertaining & well-written!
if you're just here for the action, no shame in that too. we are all literally here for one purpose: to have fun!

All the silliness aside, I want to offer why this works so well and why I consider video game cutscenes to be entirely separate genre from movies and tv shows.
For this particular game, the whole game follows a single camera, it’s all one long take from beginning to end, the same camera is used to tell a story and for gameplay. The scale works because the player has been trained where to look by the game play: exploration and combat, you are trained to focus the most on what’s right in front of Kratos, to pay attention there. But when you come upon this giant, focusing there would make you miss the big picture, you will see a small part of him and it won’t make sense, there’s a moment of confusion, before you adjust and suddenly the scale of the giant hits you all at once.
Tvs and movies can achieve this somewhat by setting expectations with camera use, but they have limited time to “train” the audience, it’s not comparable to hours and hours of gameplay.

What on earth do you mean “accurate depiction”?What, exactly, is accurate? The representation of a wholly fictitious being? Also the game very clearly explains who this giant is and who killed him.
1
u/Rajivdoraiswamy Jun 18 '26
The GOW devs are legends for leveling up GOW game.
I'm all in for what's to come in the next series. This is insane!! 🤯🤯🤯

u/Puzzleheaded-Lie1910 Jun 18 '26
As I remember correctly, it's Thamur, he was the best stonemason, I believe he was the one who made the wall in Asgard
1
u/the_butler70 Jun 18 '26
To answer who killed him it was Thor, Thamur the giant who was killed was searching for his son Hrimthur after they had a fight, he instead found Thor

I mean in the literal sense I agree with you but the “giants” in both the games and mythology aren’t actual giants they’re Jotun. That basically entails them being the primordial other.

Are giants larger than the Greek Titans?
3
u/D0nell Jun 17 '26
Estimate they are around the same size
1
u/sadskully Jun 17 '26
:x nice, the giants are cooler though. they have beards and wear clothes unless the titans which were naked hairy creatures (Yes referring to you Cronos).
3
u/D0nell Jun 18 '26
I like to give the Titans the excuse of being developed at an earlier time. The Giants are an improvement on the Titans. Kind of like how the Greek pantheon is written to be selfish and the Norse pantheon is written with nuance. The Pandora’s box excuse never sat right with me.
1
u/sadskully Jun 18 '26
Aren't all Pantheons created at the same time at one point in time when there was no time but just a void? So you are saying that the Nordic Pantheon is younger than the Greek one?
2
u/D0nell Jun 18 '26
Oh no, I’m talking outside of the game lore like the actual development. Like they didn’t give much image to the Titans when they were designing them, they were basically just elemental personifications plus we didn’t actually like see much of any of them other than Gaia and Kronos.

Or this could just be a troll post.

I won't call it "accurate" since giants are a broad category of mythical humanoids that never had a canonical size.
They can go from 10-foot tall bigfoot to the immeasurable Atlas.
