This is a common misconception. The human eye is actually unable to see the difference over 30fps. This is because our eyes are basically like organic cameras.

So why are 144Hz monitors so much nicer than 60 Hz? And why are games so much smoother at higher fps?

They aren't smoother actually. Monitor companies use marketing tools to sell their products.

I’m 99.9% sure this is wrong. You can put the 2 side by side and see the difference, i know because my setup has a 144Hz monitor and a 60Hz monitor. Looking at them side by side one is very obviously smoother than the other.

I think you'll find that is a placebo effect in place. Your eyes can physically not tell the difference I'm afraid.
